VELKOMMEN TIL

(WELCOME TO)

OSLO 1

The 1000 year old Norweigien capital sits on the water at the head of the Oslo Fjord on Norway’s southern coast. Giving spectators magnificent views of the water and the snow covered peaks seem to emerge directly from the Norweigian landscape. With a history that dates back over 1000 years, the culture of Oslo and the events that developed the city into what it is today are documented in multiple museums found throughout Oslo. Including an art museum centered around the complete works of Norwegian artist, Edvard Munch, who donated the entirety of his works, including his famous painting, The Scream, to the city following his death. Other notable museums include the Viking Ship Museum which hosts 3 seperate viking ships found in Norway that date back to the 9th century, the Nobel Peace Center which stands as a showcase to the history of the Nobel Peace Prize and the values it represents, and the world’s oldest ski museum in the Holmenkollen Ski Museum which plays host to the Holmenkollen ski jump.

top: The beautiful city of Oslo has also become the world leader in disinvestments in fossil fuels. bottom: The Holmenkollen National Arena is a Nordic skiing and biathlon venue which consists of the large ski jumping hill Holmenkollbakken, the normal hill Midtstubakken and a stadium for cross-country skiing and a shooting range for the biathlon.

MISSION STATEMENT

As spectators and Olympians witness the World’s best athletes compete, there will also be an overwhelming presense of the Norwegian people and culture. In an attempt to enhance that experience there can be found a few consistant muses throughout the design and branding process of the 2022 Winter Olympic graphics to shed greater light on Norway’s beautiful landscape and history with the winter games.

NORWEGIAN MUSE

Pulling from the city’s beauty and environmental grandeur, the designs follow Oslo’s ambiance. From the colors of the buildings to the reflection and motion of the water from the Oslofjord, inspiration can be pulled from all over the city. The Northern Light’s purples and greens, the circular formations left by ice skaters, and the swooping forms created by skiers flying down a mountainside, each is considered and meticulously used in the design development for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Oslo.

REPEATED PATTERN

Pulling from the design and formal elements from the environment and events of the Winter Olympic Games, this repeated pattern uses circular, criss crossing forms found on the ice after sharpened skates cut and glide across the surface. The interchanging pattern in color attempts to portray the fractured imagery that can be found in the reflection of the water from the Oslofjord as well as the dancing formations of the Northern Lights. This pattern will be used throughout the deliverables including tickets, banners, athletic bibs, and other merchandise.

JORDAN AMALFI ARENA EXTENSION Serving as the primary ice rink in Oslo, the Jordal Amfi Arena is a 4,450-spectator arean and will be the focal complex for potentially curling, figure skating, or short track speed skating. As many events will be held in the Jordal Amfi Arena, an extension will be added to the complex visualized in these photos. This extension will include two rink sizes to accomodate for a 4,500 seat curling arena, or 6,200 seats for hockey.

OLYMPIC VENUE BRANDING The current locations that are located around Oslo will be transformed to visualize the Winter Olympic Games. The Holmenkollbakken ski jump to the left will have the Olympic logo painted into the landing as well as banners added to the chain linked fences that will direct spectators to and from the events located at the location. To the right is the Oslo Winter Park that will host the skiing and snowboarding freestyle events. Metal additions will be added to dress up the courses to make them look and feel like the prestiges opportunity it is to compete in the Olympics

LOGO MARK

The Olympic Games are famous for their opening ceremonies, all of which are leading up to the culmination of the lighting of the Olympic torch. A beacon of peace and friendly competition, the torch is an iconic symbol for the Olympics and is placed on display in this design. Using the torch as the thematic base to this design, the form comes together through the observation of both the dancing like movement from the Northern Lights and the swooping tracks that are left behind by the alpine athletes on the mountain’s surface. As spectators witness the greatness of the Olympians on the slopes, when night falls they are sure to see the glory of the world’s most beautiful and breathtaking natural phenomenons as Norway is famous for their views of the Northern Lights

12

13

PICTOGRAMS

In an attempt to pair logo form concepts with potential pictogram forms, this pictogram concept aligns with the country’s famous views of the Northern Lights and the swooping images of the footprints that the Winter Olympic athletes leave behind on this world platform. Big carves and cuts into snow and ice which create these tapered patterns that look like brush strokes while maintaining the intense speed that comes along with these Olympic events. With continued attempts at displaying the figures without heads, the decision was made to incorporate circular heads to give the viewer a starting point when viewing the forms and to allow for easier international identification of each Olympic event.

14

15

OLYMPIC BANNERS

These banners will be used to create the ambiance surrounding the olympic games in Oslo through the addition of color and energy that they will provide around the city. Each will be located and designed for specific events for surrounding stadiums and event locations.

16

17

OLYMPIAN BIBS

Each Olympian will be given an event bib to wear during each event that will signify who they are during the duration of each event to the audience and judges. Each bib is designed to display a participant number, participant color, and event on the left shoulder. The pattern is consistent with the repeated pattern presented along with the subliminal addition of the event pictogram, blown up in size on the right side of the background.
