Commandment
From space-saving designs to the latest in luxury ac mind By Christine Cooney
Discover what inspires you
We no longer need to restrict ourselves to a particular design style. Today’s design is all about bringing together a variety of elements and colors that inspire you. Maybe you’re traditional, but are inspired by a sleek-lined contemporary faucet for your kitchen or master bath. Don’t be afraid to mix-and- match different styles to create a custom look that you’ll enjoy. Don’t use decorative items simply to fill space The decorative accents you select for your home should be functional and inspirational. When looking for these special items, don’t select something that you don’t truly love just because it suits your room or budget. If you can’t afford to purchase the items that you really want right now, then be patient and wait until you have the money to spend. Leaving your walls bare or rooms sparse for a little while will be worth the wait to create the perfect room. Have a Well Thought out Plan Be sure that you have a well thought out plan before you start designing any room. Put together a list of “must haves” and “would like to have” items so you will stay focused with your project. This will help to ensure that you design a thoroughly functional and enjoyable room. Don’t skimp on quality products That old saying “you get what you pay for” couldn’t be truer when it comes to products for your home. With so many discount retailers available, you need to be a smart shopper. Good looks doesn’t always guarantee quality product. Buy brands that you know and trust, especially when it comes to appliances. You may pay a little more initially, but you’ll have a product that will last a long time. Color your home beautiful Color is everywhere, which is why it is one of the most important decorating decisions you’ll make in your home. Inside your home, your color scheme is as much a reflection of your personality as it’s importance to the success of your decor.

While the main focus when decorating a room is the floor and four walls, it’s important not to forget your ceiling, which can add dimension and character to your home. Thanks to new materials such as faux wood, urethane millwork and PVC trim, which are ecofriendly, affordable and versatile, you can dress up any room by adding faux beams and decorative moulding. For a more dramatic design try a dropped, coffered or tray ceilings. For a touch of elegance try a ceiling medallion with a chandelier. Don’t forget about your lighting fixtures and ceilings fans, which make a great addition to any room. Make sure your rooms complement each other With the popularity of open floor plans it is important that your living room, dining room and kitchen flow together. Color is key in an open living space, so make sure your color scheme is consistent. You can pull decorative elements from one room into another by matching your cabinetry or coordinating your fixtures (lamps, tables) with the same metal finishes used for your faucets and hardware. Have fun with your flooring by mixing textures like wood, tile and marble to create a unique design.

Fall Decorating Decorating your home with touches of autumn decor will
D
Decorating your home for the fall season can be a wonderful good time spent with family, without breaking the bank. There are plenty of things to like about this time of year, such as the return of cooler temperatures (gather round the fireplace), fall colors and nature changing before our eyes (take in the gorgeous foliage). Adding fall touches of décor to the interior and exterior of your home will help you transition into a new and exciting season of holidays and family traditions. Here are some great ideas and tips to decorate your home for the fall: Dress up your porch
You can easily give your front porch and entry fall inspiration by wrapping corn stalks, raffia or straw around your columns and railings. Add rich colors to this theme by attaching thick ribbons and placing mums on your front steps. If you have children, don’t forget the pumpkins. Pumpkins not only symbolize Halloween but fall harvest. The best thing about using pumpkins to decorate your porch or entryway is that you can turn them into Jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween night, while snacking on homemade pumpkin seeds Light up your home’s exterior

elements, you should consider both an outdoor doormat and an indoor entrance mat. Add autumn artwork to your walls Display artwork that depicts fall themes and colors in your front foyer or on a dominant wall in your family room or dining room. Consider nature themes with fall colors like oranges, reds and golden yellows, which can alter the mood in your home. Wall candles not only provide ambience, but can also bring the aroma of fall into your home with the scents of apple, cinnamon and pumpkin. Use your fireplace to showcase dĂŠcor Your fireplace mantel is a great place to showcase your seasonal dĂŠcor. Simply by taking a walk in the woods or your own backyard you can find a treasure chest of pinecones, dried leaves, cattails and red berries to create a simple decoration. Adding small pumpkins, gourds, dried arrangements and richly colored candles will add appeal to your mantel.

Our Favorite Apple Pie Recipe Fall is a wonderful time of year, not only for the rich colors nature has to offer, but also because it kick starts a season of family traditions and holidays. It is also the time when we dust off our family cookbooks to create traditional dishes and desserts. For many of us it conjures up a warm memory of time spent in the kitchen, waiting eagerly to help create and taste all these wonderful, seasonal creations. If you love apples, fall is the perfect time to gather the family to your local farm for apple picking and then spend an afternoon in the kitchen making the perfect apple pie. Our editor’s would like to share their favorite apple pie recipe:
other great baking apples are Jonagold and Stayman. Peel the apples and cut into equal pieces.
Angie’s Apple Pie
Add half of the apples to the pie dish
First you need to make the pie crust:
Sprinkle nutmeg, cinnamon (how much or little depends on your personal taste), a little flour and 1/4 cup of sugar over the apples.
Sift together: 2 cups floor
Add the rest of apples, more cinnamon, flour (about a teaspoon worth) and 1/3 cup of sugar.
¼ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon of sugar Add ¾ cup of shortening Crisscross with butter knives (or use a food processor) until mixture resembles cornmeal. Add ¼ cup cold water and knead into a large soft ball. Cut into two equal pieces. Roll out one of the pieces for the bottom crust (make sure that you use a heavily floured surface so the dough doesn’t stick, the less you handle it the better). Place in a 9” pie plate and then sprinkle some flour (this will help absorb the juice). Set aside the top crust (do not roll out until filling has been added) Pie Filling: You’ll need 7-10 apples depending on the size. We swear by Mutsu or Crispin, but

Place 5 small chunks of butter around the top of the apples and ¼ teaspoon of fresh squeezed lemon. Now roll out the top crust and gently place on top of the filling. Pinch top and bottom of dough rounds firmly together. Trim excess dough with kitchen shears, leaving a 3/4 inch overhang. Fold the edge of the top piece of dough over and under the edge of the bottom piece of dough, pressing together. Flute edges using thumb and forefinger or press with a fork. Brush the crust with one beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar. Make 5 slits (about 2-inches long) so that steam from the cooking pie can escape. Bake at 450 for 10 minutes, then at bake at 350 for 40-50 minutes
For truly exceptional kitchens, two names stand out.
