President Jerold Axelrod Editor Tammy Crosby

Welcome to Dream House Plans, Home Plans & Floor Plans’ premiere digital Her Dream Home magazine. We’re going digital to support our initiative with ENERGY STAR®, help reduce the 42% of forests cut every year used for the production of pulp and paper and reduce the use of fossil fuels that go into printing and distributing conventional print magazines.

Contributing Writers Christine Sears Jo-Ann Lavin

We’re committed to showing consumers and builders how to build green, energy efficient homes from the onset as soon as they break ground. Our ENERGY STAR® home plans come preapproved with information on obtaining field certification to build a healthier living environment while promoting building practices that use energy, water and materials more efficiently. Something for our readers to consider is that most newsstand magazines have approximately a 75% shred rate (that means 75% of the magazines are shredded and never used). We’re proud to be going digital and hope you support our efforts by perusing our environmentally-friendly e-zine! In this first issue we not only focus on Mother Earth but the real mothers, wives, sisters, aunts and all the women who strive to make their homes perfect for their families and friends. This handpicked collection of plans feature all the design detail that women need to be efficient in our very busy world. Mud rooms for neatness and organization, kitchens that take into consideration prepping, cleaning and serving, bonus rooms that give the kids a place to escape, master baths and suites that provide a place to retreat at the end of hectic days and much more is featured in our first issue. We hope you enjoy our premiere issue and join with us in our commitment to be environmentally conscientious in big ways like building a new home and in small ways in the way we live our daily lives.

Homes designed with a Woman’s Touch

Strasbourg House Plan Plan HHF-4153

No matter what the season, it is always fitting to recognize the women who truly make a house a home. From the cozy living room filled with pictures and keepsakes to the sweet smells of a home cooked dinner in a well-designed kitchen to the worn rocking chair in the corner of a master suite overlooking the backyard — these are just a few of the special ways mothers turn houses into homes. It is no surprise that when it comes to building a home and selecting a house plan that over 60% of house plans are bought by woman. They know how much space they need in their new home to make it functional, yet appeal to their tastes. They know exactly what they need — a large kitchen with cooking area and breakfast counter, lots of storage space, a large dining room for special occasions, an open floor plan with lots of room to make changes down the road and an outdoor living space to host birthday parties.

Mirabel House Plan Plan HHF-5597

Our female designers have put together a list of “must

have” features a house plan needs in order to accommodate the many needs and sensibilities women have through all stages in their home life — wife, mother and grandmother. All of their homes have been designed to reduce stress, facilitate entertaining and promote family time.

Gone are the days of Ozzie and Harriet and the Cleaver’s, where the wife/mother was tucked away in a tiny kitchen preparing the meals while the family sat in the living room watching TV until they were called to the dining room, where the table was perfectly set. Today’s home is all about creating a more casual and social atmosphere by having an open floor plan from the kitchen area to the living area. This allows the cook to talk with guests or family members rather than being secluded. Since most people gravitate to the kitchen it makes sense to keep the area open. Who knows, your guests might even be inspired to lend a helping hand. When it comes to the design of the kitchen, women want lots of storage space, which is why you’ll typically find cabinets with lots of built-ins, like pull-out shelves, revolving shelves and drawer organizers. Our designers recommend you use your old kitchen as a starting point to ensure proper kitchen design, by writing a list of your likes and dislikes. For example: Do you like where your ovens are located? Is the refrigerator in a user-friendly location that doesn’t cause traffic while you are trying to cook? Would another sink or oven be helpful with food preparation? Is there ample space near a pantry to set down groceries? Where do you plan to prepare vegetables and meats? Is the dishwasher placed for efficient loading and unloading?

Tree Top Treasure Plan HHF-6940

Does your countertop space adequately allow room for appliances, food preparation and cooking utensils? When it comes to the master bath, it’s all about pampering, which is why woman require large bathrooms with a separate bath and shower area to make room for bathroom furniture like chaise lounges. In many master bathrooms you’ll find a sitting area with television, sound system and even a wet bar, so you can relax after taking a long bath. Large windows are essential in creating a natural bathroom setting. Since most women spend way more time than they want to in the laundry room, it’s no surprise why women would crave a more organized and attractive laundry space. You’ll find that the laundry room has steadily been coming out of hiding in basements and closets (very inconvenient places for women who need to multi-task) and moving into more convenient areas of the home, such as the master suite, mudroom and off the kitchen and garage. In fact, most architects and designers are incorporating more detailed laundry rooms in their house plans so homeowners can create a comfortable and functional space for the whole family to enjoy. Most architects, designers and builders realize that women have some unique requirements and preferences for their home. But fortunately, many of these female touches add ambiance, user convenience and flexibility and even add to the resale value of the home.

In Home Design What Women Want

Weber House Plan Plan HHF-7679

W

Holly Oaks House Plan Plan HHF-1886

When it comes to what women want in design features for their new home, it’s unanimous that features like mud rooms and spa baths are commonly requested. Here are some of the more popular changes women make to home plans before they leave the drawing board. Mud rooms are a must have for most women, who don’t want the front entrance to their home to be flooded with shoes, sneakers, school bags and sporting equipment. A mud room is usually informal and designed as a back or side entrance for the family. Depending on the size of the space, many women would like to have their laundry room incorporated into this area as well. If not, the second most popular request for a laundry room is next to the bedrooms. If there’s no space on the second floor for a laundry room, see if your designer can incorporate a laundry shoot.

There will never be enough storage to last the many years you live and grow in your home, but it will take some of the stress off by adding as many storage elements to your new home design as possible — walk-in pantry, media centers, walk-in closets, corner shelving, window seats and as many closets as the floor plan will allow. While the garage is generally considered the “guys” part of the house, women are starting to take interest in the added storage and extra space most new garage designs offer. Since formal dining rooms are generally a thing of the past, we get many requests to turn a formal dining room into a bedroom or office. When it comes to the kitchen, women always want the very best, from the latest appliances, faucets and sinks, countertops, floors and cabinetry. And architects and designers continue to create unique, yet functional kitchens the whole family can enjoy and share.

Speaking of laundry rooms, there is no woman or adult that would disagree that a laundry room is an essential element to any home design. In many cases women have asked to have a small bedroom or flexible space converted into a laundry room.

As more and more families become blended, the need for flexible spaces and open floor plans are key in creating a healthy home environment. Designs that incorporate bonus rooms, future space and flexible spaces will definitely draw the attention of a female house plan purchaser.

Plenty of indoor/outdoor living space for entertaining.

T

hough this is but a single-story home, it satisfies and delights on many levels. The exterior has visual appeal with varied rooflines, a mix of materials and graceful traditional lines. The interior is thoughtfully planned for family living. Count among the living spaces a huge great room with sloped, vaulted ceiling, fireplace and built-ins; a media room with double-door access; a private home office; and an outdoor living area with fireplace. There are two dining spaces — a formal dining room with hutch recess and a nook that opens to an outdoor kitchen with built-in grill. Speaking of kitchens, the main one in this home has an island, two sink prep areas, a butler’s pantry connecting it to the formal dining room, and a walk-in pantry. Family bedrooms sit to the front of the plan and are joined by a jack-and-jill bath. The master suite is on the far right side. Its grand salon has an eleven-foot ceiling, a fireplace, built-ins, a walk-in closet and a superb bath. If you need extra space, there’s a bonus room on an upper level above the garage.

Efficient Kitchen

Work Spaces

This kitchen is designed using the next generation of Jenn-Air® appliances.

W

Food Preparation and Storage Work Center

Whether you love to cook or entertain or simply understand the importance of having a kitchen work space that allows you to multi-task, designing an efficient work space is a key ingredient to enjoying one of the busiest rooms in your home. Whether your kitchen floor plan is straight, U-shaped, L-shaped, or otherwise - its fundamental efficiency revolves around the triangle. Just as the work triangle has three points -cooktops/ranges, sink and refrigerator - your kitchen should also have three work centers - food preparation and storage, cooking and cleanup. Our designers offer the following suggestions and tips to create work centers that can dramatically improve your kitchen’s efficiency. You’ll save time, energy and miles of extra steps so you can actually enjoy time spent in your kitchen with family and friends.

22

Her Dream Home

Be sure to plan for lots of organized kitchen storage for canned and dry goods, mixing bowls, cookbooks, and small appliances. A pantry with rollout shelving makes reaching those rarely used cans of vegetables in the back of the cupboard a snap. Place your primary food storage area near the longest stretch of countertop for easy access to items while cooking. The best place to store food is in cabinets that line the outside walls — away from the heat source. If possible, try to avoid placing food next to cabinets that touch the stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. Cooking Work Center The main ingredients for the cooking center are the cooktop/range and the microwave oven. Be sure your cooking center has ample storage for pots and pans, utensils, spices and seasonings and additional food products that you frequently use. A cooktop is safest and most efficient when you have at least 18 inches of counter space on each side — don’t skimp on the material you use for your countertop since you need it to be durable, heat-resistant and easy to clean.

This luxury kitchen is from Merillat’s Masterpiece® Collection. This enables you to have extra space for your handles and provides a quick landing space for hot pots. Don’t forget to design a ventilation system around your cooking center. Cleanup Work Center The sink is the centerpiece of kitchen cleanup, so make sure that you spend some time selecting the type of sink and faucet you want. The most common sinks are single bowl, double bowl, triple bowl, and main sink plus prep sink. The other main components are the dishwasher and garbage disposal. The dishwasher should be next to the sink to minimize drips on the floor. It should be to the left of the sink if the main cook is right-handed, and to the right if that person is left-handed.

Delta® offers a full-line of pull-down kitchen faucets, including the Allora® collection.

You can store your everyday dishes, glassware and utensils near the dishwasher for easy unloading, but you may prefer another convenient location, such as near the dining table If your plans include a trash compactor, have it installed on the side of the sink opposite the dishwasher to save steps. The cleanup center also requires ample storage for dishtowels, cleaning products, and a garbage can.

Top Kitchen & Bath Trends

T

The results are in from a recent survey of designers conducted by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) to reveal the key design trends for 2010. The results of the NKBA 2010 Kitchen & Bath Design Trends Survey confirmed the continuation of a number of existing trends in the marketplace, but also uncovered others that indicate shifts in the direction that kitchen and bath style will take this year. Below are 2010’s kitchen and bath trends. Kitchen Trends

Traditional will continue as the most popular kitchen design style in 2010, with contemporary following closely behind, while the Shaker style is seeing a surprisingly strong resurgence. Shades of whites and off-whites will be the most common kitchen colors in 2010, while brown, beige, and bone hues will also be popular.

Cherry will remain the most popular wood for kitchen cabinetry, followed closely by maple, while

40

Her Dream Home

alder increases in use. As for the finishes placed on those cabinets, medium natural, dark natural, glazed, and white painted will all be common. Other colors of painted cabinetry and light natural finishes are in decline, as well as distressed finishes.

Ceramic and porcelain tile, as well as natural stone tile, remain popular kitchen flooring options, but hardwood will dominate the kitchen landscape more than ever in 2010. For countertops, granite continues to be the most popular option, but quartz will nearly catch up in popularity. For backsplashes, ceramic or porcelain tile and glass will serve as the primary materials.

Standard kitchen faucets will become less standard in 2010 in favor of more convenient models. Pull-out faucets continue to increase their market dominance, while pot filler faucets will also become more prevalent. Kitchen faucets will most often be finished in brushed nickel, followed by stainless steel, satin nickel, and — surprisingly — polished chrome.

French door and freezer-bottom are the two most popular styles of refrigerators, and side-by-side refrigerators remain a popular option. A surprising trend is the extent to which undercounter refrigerator drawers are being used in the latest kitchen designs. Perhaps even more surprising is that undercounter wine

This collection features the Opulence Double vessel sinks by DanzeŽ. bathrooms, followed by whites and off-whites, and then by browns, indicating a somewhat subdued color palette this year.

refrigerators have been recently specified by half of kitchen designers.

The tried-and-true range continues to serve as the workhorse for cooking, although the combination of a cooktop and wall oven is beginning to overtake it. Gas will maintain its position as the most popular type of cooktop over electric, although induction cooking continues to gain in popularity due to its energy efficiency.

Ceramic and porcelain tile will be the dominant flooring materials in bathrooms this year, while natural stone will continue to prove popular as well. Though increasingly popular in kitchens, hardwood flooring won’t become common in bathrooms in 2010. For vanity tops, granite will remain king, with quartz and marble also proving popular options.

Standard dishwashers, with the traditional door that pulls from the top down, will once again be easily the most common type in 2010. However, an increasing number of dishwasher drawers will be installed in kitchens this year for their convenience and their ability to wash small loads of dishes in each drawer, thereby saving water and electricity.

Perhaps more than ever, the most common color for fixtures will be white. Bisque and off-white will be the only other fixture colors at all common in new or remodeled bathroom. For sinks, simple undermount models will be most popular, followed by integrated sink tops, drop-in sinks, vessel sinks, and pedestal sinks.

Faucet finishes in the bathroom are similar to those used in current kitchen designs, with brushed nickel continuing to lead the way in 2010. Polished chrome and satin nickel will also be incorporated into many bathrooms, just as they had been throughout 2009. These faucet finishes will be followed by bronze and stainless steel.

Bathroom Trends Traditional will be the most popular design style in bathrooms in 2010, as contemporary designs will be a distant second, followed by the Shaker style as an even more distant third. Beiges and bones will be the most common colors used in
