SPRING TERM 2024

It has been both a short and actionpacked Spring Term at Hereford Cathedral School, with no shortage of cultural, sporting and super-curricular opportunities, including the visit to school of a serving member of Cabinet and Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Throughout the term, our pupils have sought to live out our school values of kindness, courage and integrity through the behaviours they have exhibited and the actions to which they have committed. It has been a strong start to the first quarter of the calendar year and we hope to continue to build on this momentum.

For those in Year 11 and 13 with public examinations on the horizon, the Easter holidays provide the opportunity for thorough revision, and Year 10 and 12 will also welcome the chance to prepare for their internal exams which are imminent.

For all of us, may we have a blessed Easter, in what is the most important time in the Christian calendar.

For One Night Only in February, Hereford Cathedral School pupils brought the magic to The Courtyard stage, performing a hugely impressive programme of musical theatre, dance and drama.

The evening included songs from The Addams Family, Carousel and Les Misérables, dance numbers, Shakespeare scenes, appearances from Cantabile Girls' Choir, The Acafellas, the HCS Jazz Band and much more! The show was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the breadth of talent that we have among our pupil body.

Director of Drama, Mr Martin said: "One Night Only was such a triumph. It was a real treat to see so many pupils from so many year groups demonstrating such an astonishing depth and breadth of talent. Moments of gorgeous musicality, breath-taking choreography and charged dramatic performance all fused together to prove what a rich tapestry of artists we have at HCS, and it was really heartening to see some of our most experienced students supporting and guiding those who had not yet worked in The Courtyard. The opportunity to perform in a professional theatre, with professional technicians, is not one that we take for granted, and we're so excited to make a start on our next school musical, which will be held at The Courtyard in February 2025."

SECOND ENGLAND U18 CALL-UP FOR GEORGE

Congratulations to Hereford Cathedral School 1st XV Rugby Captain, George K, who has been selected to represent England in the U18 Men’s Six Nations Rugby Festival in Italy at the end of March. George's selection follows his performance in the England U18 fixture against France earlier this month.

Head of Rugby, Mr Milsom commented: "I am incredibly proud of George and his development as both a rugby player and a young man. Having joined us in Year 7, it has been extremely rewarding for me personally to see his development over the last 7 years. His selection into the England Rugby U18s squad is a testament to his talent, commitment and hard work. We are all incredibly proud of him and cannot wait to see him shine on the field."

DEBATE IN HCS VISIT

Hereford Cathedral School pupils received a rare opportunity to meet a serving Minister in March, when the Rt Hon Michael Tomlinson KC – MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole – visited the School.

Mr Tomlinson began his visit by simulating a Parliament setting, with the audience split along opposite sides of the Zimmerman Hall. He then encouraged the pupil audience to debate whether or not 16 year olds should be allowed to vote. The lively debate was followed by a Q&A session, in which pupils had the opportunity to ask Mr Tomlinson about his role as Minister of State for Countering Illegal Migration, and the work of the House of Commons.

Mr Tomlinson is an Old Herefordian, and is the son of Dr Howard Tomlinson, who was Headmaster of HCS from 1987-2005. Michael Tomlinson left HCS in 1996 to study Classics at King's College London, before studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Law at the College of Law. He has been an MP since 2015. It was a pleasure to welcome him back to HCS.

FASHION SHOW RAISES £3,500

In February, the HCS Sports Hall was transformed into a glamorous catwalk ready for the much-anticipated return of the HCS Fashion Show.

This student-led initiative aimed to make a positive impact through sustainable fashion, raising funds for two deserving charities: Little Princess Trust and GoodWeave.

Under the theme 'Sustainable fashion is the future', the Fashion Show showcased the creativity and talent of Hereford Cathedral School’s emerging designers, featuring both contemporary and sustainable collections. The audience enjoyed a mix of innovative designs and ethical fashion statements. The event also featured music and dance performances, and a sale of pre-loved clothing.

It had been 8 years since the last HCS Fashion Show, and the event had always been

YEAR 12 PERFORMERS BRING MIKE BARTLETT'S BULL TO THE POWELL

There was an intense atmosphere in the Powell Theatre in the last week of term as rehearsals came together for the Year 12 production of Mike Bartlett's Bull – a razor-sharp play about the fine line between office politics and playground bullying.

Two casts of four performers brought to life this modern masterpiece over two nights. Each performance also featured an extract from Far Away, by Caryl Churchill.

Director of Drama, Mr Martin, commented: "It has been a real pleasure to work with such a talented, committed and thoughtful cast on these beautifully written and blisteringly brutal plays."

FOR CHARITIES

popular. Year 12 pupil, Madeleine T, who resurrected the event for her EPQ, commented: "With a reputation like this, we knew it would be daunting to bring the Fashion Show back to its former glory. But despite the size of this challenge, our school community worked hard to ensure it was a night to remember."

The event was a huge success, raising £3,500 for the two charities.

Madeleine added: "It meant so much to see the Fashion Show back in action, and I cannot wait to see what the next generation of the HCS Fashion Show will look like."

MUSICAL TALENT IN CHORAL & ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

In March, over 150 pupils, including all of Year 7 Junior Choir, took part in one of the biggest events of the school's calendar: The Orchestral and Choral Concert in Hereford Cathedral.

The School’s Symphony Orchestra presented a diverse programme of music, featuring Mendelssohn’s Nocturne from a Midsummer Night’s Dream, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No.1 and the last movement of Brahms’ Symphony No.1. The first half also featured two student brass players as soloists. Jack S (Year 12), gave a masterful delivery of the first movement of Hummel's Trumpet Concerto in Eb. Alex G (Year 13), was the soloist in a specially commissioned arrangement of The Acrobat by John Greenwood.

WHERE COULD LEARNING A LANGUAGE TAKE YOU?

This term's Languages No Limits event was a big success. Pupils enjoyed language taster sessions, including learning to order pretzels in German during Oktoberfest, Día de los Muertos colouring in Spanish, writing names in Cyrillic, creating maschere in Italian, role-playing a cafe scenario in Flemish, and finally taking virtual tours of European cities.

Thank you to Old Herefordians Quinn Porter, Flora Glass, Michael Poolton and Sarah Hunter Choat for inspiring our pupils to love learning languages through their fantastic guest talks.

The second half of the evening saw the Hereford Cathedral School Choral Society, Chapel Choir, Senior Chamber Choir and Year 7 Junior Choir combine to perform John Rutter's Requiem, accompanied by a guest orchestra of teachers and friends of the school. We were delighted to welcome back OH

We ran the refreshments at the reinvigorated HCS Fashion Show in February, which was a tremendous success and we hope to see it continue.

We have recently agreed grants for the Environmental Society, Drama Department, and juggling equipment for the new circus skills club. At our last committee meeting we were able to have hands-on experience of the VR headsets that we have funded.

Our social media presence has been resurrected to make communications easier – search for 'Friends of Hereford Cathedral School PTA' on Facebook. Also, if you would like to be a year representative, there are still vacancies.

On the horizon is a summer fundraiser in June and a Winter Extravaganza in December...keep your eyes peeled

CHAPEL CHOIR RETURN TO ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL TO LEAD EVENSONG

Fifty members of Hereford Cathedral School's Chapel Choir were privileged to lead Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Tuesday.

St Paul’s is one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks, attracting thousands of visitors each day. The service was led by the Dean of St Paul’s and accompanied on the organ by HCS Head of Academic Music, Mr Semple, who was a former Head Chorister at St Paul’s as a boy.

Singing to a congregation of almost 300 people, the choir performed music by Herbert Howells, Charles Villiers Stanford and Joanna Forbes L’Estrange. Many members of the public commented on the professionalism of the choir.

A TRIP TO THE LAND OF FIRE & ICE

A group of Hereford Cathedral School Geography students travelled to Iceland in February. They visited Gullfloss Falls and the Secret Lagoon, the amazing waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, Black Beach and the lava museum. What an experience!

Joint Head of School, Isabelle M, commented: "Singing Evensong in St Paul’s Cathedral was a truly special experience. The echoes are amazing. It was lovely to see so many friendly faces in the congregation, and I’m so happy that all of our hard work paid off." Meanwhile, Joint Head of School, Will C added: "Having joined HCS with little musical experience, the ability to sing Evensong at St Paul's Cathedral is a credit to the opportunities provided not just by the Music Department but the whole school. The open and inclusive nature of the School's Chapel Choir allows for all students at HCS to share in these experiences."
