SPRING TERM 2024
It has been both a short and actionpacked Spring Term at Hereford Cathedral School, with no shortage of cultural, sporting and super-curricular opportunities, including the visit to school of a serving member of Cabinet and Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral.
Throughout the term, our pupils have sought to live out our school values of kindness, courage and integrity through the behaviours they have exhibited and the actions to which they have committed. It has been a strong start to the first quarter of the calendar year and we hope to continue to build on this momentum.
For those in Year 11 and 13 with public examinations on the horizon, the Easter holidays provide the opportunity for thorough revision, and Year 10 and 12 will also welcome the chance to prepare for their internal exams which are imminent.
For all of us, may we have a blessed Easter, in what is the most important time in the Christian calendar.
For One Night Only in February, Hereford Cathedral School pupils brought the magic to The Courtyard stage, performing a hugely impressive programme of musical theatre, dance and drama.
The evening included songs from The Addams Family, Carousel and Les Misérables, dance numbers, Shakespeare scenes, appearances from Cantabile Girls' Choir, The Acafellas, the HCS Jazz Band and much more! The show was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the breadth of talent that we have among our pupil body.
Director of Drama, Mr Martin said: "One Night Only was such a triumph. It was a real treat to see so many pupils from so many year groups demonstrating such an astonishing depth and breadth of talent. Moments of gorgeous musicality, breath-taking choreography and charged dramatic performance all fused together to prove what a rich tapestry of artists we have at HCS, and it was really heartening to see some of our most experienced students supporting and guiding those who had not yet worked in The Courtyard. The opportunity to perform in a professional theatre, with professional technicians, is not one that we take for granted, and we're so excited to make a start on our next school musical, which will be held at The Courtyard in February 2025."
SECOND ENGLAND U18 CALL-UP FOR GEORGE
Congratulations to Hereford Cathedral School 1st XV Rugby Captain, George K, who has been selected to represent England in the U18 Men’s Six Nations Rugby Festival in Italy at the end of March. George's selection follows his performance in the England U18 fixture against France earlier this month.
Head of Rugby, Mr Milsom commented: "I am incredibly proud of George and his development as both a rugby player and a young man. Having joined us in Year 7, it has been extremely rewarding for me personally to see his development over the last 7 years. His selection into the England Rugby U18s squad is a testament to his talent, commitment and hard work. We are all incredibly proud of him and cannot wait to see him shine on the field."

DEBATE IN HCS VISIT
Hereford Cathedral School pupils received a rare opportunity to meet a serving Minister in March, when the Rt Hon Michael Tomlinson KC – MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole – visited the School.
Mr Tomlinson began his visit by simulating a Parliament setting, with the audience split along opposite sides of the Zimmerman Hall. He then encouraged the pupil audience to debate whether or not 16 year olds should be allowed to vote. The lively debate was followed by a Q&A session, in which pupils had the opportunity to ask Mr Tomlinson about his role as Minister of State for Countering Illegal Migration, and the work of the House of Commons.
Mr Tomlinson is an Old Herefordian, and is the son of Dr Howard Tomlinson, who was Headmaster of HCS from 1987-2005. Michael Tomlinson left HCS in 1996 to study Classics at King's College London, before studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Law at the College of Law. He has been an MP since 2015. It was a pleasure to welcome him back to HCS.
FASHION SHOW RAISES £3,500
In February, the HCS Sports Hall was transformed into a glamorous catwalk ready for the much-anticipated return of the HCS Fashion Show.
This student-led initiative aimed to make a positive impact through sustainable fashion, raising funds for two deserving charities: Little Princess Trust and GoodWeave.
Under the theme 'Sustainable fashion is the future', the Fashion Show showcased the creativity and talent of Hereford Cathedral School’s emerging designers, featuring both contemporary and sustainable collections. The audience enjoyed a mix of innovative designs and ethical fashion statements. The event also featured music and dance performances, and a sale of pre-loved clothing.
It had been 8 years since the last HCS Fashion Show, and the event had always been
YEAR 12 PERFORMERS BRING MIKE BARTLETT'S BULL TO THE POWELL
There was an intense atmosphere in the Powell Theatre in the last week of term as rehearsals came together for the Year 12 production of Mike Bartlett's Bull – a razor-sharp play about the fine line between office politics and playground bullying.
Two casts of four performers brought to life this modern masterpiece over two nights. Each performance also featured an extract from Far Away, by Caryl Churchill.
Director of Drama, Mr Martin, commented: "It has been a real pleasure to work with such a talented, committed and thoughtful cast on these beautifully written and blisteringly brutal plays."
FOR CHARITIES
popular. Year 12 pupil, Madeleine T, who resurrected the event for her EPQ, commented: "With a reputation like this, we knew it would be daunting to bring the Fashion Show back to its former glory. But despite the size of this challenge, our school community worked hard to ensure it was a night to remember."
The event was a huge success, raising £3,500 for the two charities.
Madeleine added: "It meant so much to see the Fashion Show back in action, and I cannot wait to see what the next generation of the HCS Fashion Show will look like."
