WELCOME

As parents we naturally want the best for our children. At Hereford Cathedral Junior School we provide an outstanding education in the heart of the city. Within our beautiful, tranquil setting, you will find a warm and inviting atmosphere where children develop deep and nurturing relationships, enjoy their learning and develop confidence.

With our small class sizes, specialist staff and strong pastoral care, we are able to respond to the individual needs of each and every child. Our aim is to both support and challenge, giving each child the chance to do their best by developing skills for life, such as adaptability, creativity, resilience and self-growth.

Excellent teaching is at the heart of what we do and with a strong reputation for Sport, Music, Drama and Art, we encourage every child to make the most of the wide range of opportunities on offer. Traditional values, such as good manners, tolerance and consideration for others, are also developed in our safe and caring environment. Above all, it is important to us that our children are happy and flourish during their time with us.

You are warmly invited to visit and see the school for yourself and I very much look forward to meeting you soon.

NURSERY

BOYS & GIRLS AGE 3+

Our Nursery provides a caring, happy and inviting atmosphere in which your child can take their first steps in education. We build confidence and self-esteem within a secure and stimulating environment, through both structured activities and purposeful play.

Qualified, experienced staff encourage the children to explore, discover and learn. Through a variety of fun activities, we develop the whole child; their personal and social skills, early language and mathematical understanding, an awareness of the world around them and their physical and creative skills too.

“Each child we spent time with was friendly, relaxed, happy and engaged. You can pretty much hear their little brains fizzing. A delightful place to start exploring life’s possibilities.” Good Schools Guide

As well as our well-equipped Nursery setting, we also use the School facilities and our local environment to enrich Nursery activities. Our children develop an understanding of the wider world, walking to the park or visiting the school library. Our small class sizes mean that our children enjoy individual attention while also benefiting from an exciting and varied programme, including specialist music and singing, movement, PE and French.

Children can attend full or part-time during term-time from the beginning of the term in which they turn three.

PRE-PREP AND JUNIOR BOYS & GIRLS AGE 4-11

Our Pre-Prep and Junior School welcomes children from Reception through to the end of Year 6, offering a wide-ranging curriculum, small class sizes, specialist teaching staff and strong pastoral care.

Located in The Moat, our bright and modern Pre-Prep classrooms and outdoor areas offer our younger children, from Reception to Year 2, the ideal space to learn and explore. Through high-quality teaching and excellent pastoral care, we provide opportunities to develop independent thinking and self-confidence. We place a strong emphasis on numeracy and literacy, whilst also offering a variety of activities to support our children in developing a range of skills and a sense of respect and care for others.

Our Junior School pupils, from Years 3 to 6, are offered a curriculum that is broad and challenging, delivered through stimulating, engaging and creative teaching.

We ensure each child has a firm foundation in the core skills of English, Maths and Science, and introduce new ideas and cultures through work in History, Geography, French, PSHE and Religious Education. We encourage pupils to ask questions of the world around them, to respect and understand other people’s beliefs and to learn about their role in the wider community.

Our pupils are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities available to them, developing interests in other areas of the curriculum, such as ICT, music, drama, art or sport. This is supplemented by a wide-ranging programme of lunchtime and after-school clubs which cover a variety of activities including craft, drama, cooking, rugby, creative writing, chess, science and Latin.

“Sport, teamwork and having a go are considered very important parts of the school experience.” Good Schools Guide

When pupils leave the Junior School they are confident, independent, curious learners who are prepared for, and looking forward to, the challenges ahead.

The all-round approach to education could not be bettered in our opinion and we are thrilled our daughter is embarking on a tremendous journey with the school.

Parent of Reception child

The school has a real family ethos and our boys feel at home, are thriving in their education and are benefitting greatly from the experiences they have had. They both can’t wait to get there in the morning!

Parent of Year 4 child

My daughter cannot wait to go in each day, in fact she now attends an extra day at her request. The children get a lot of one-to-one attention and superior learning from an early age.

Parent of Nursery child

We have all found the school to be incredibly friendly and supportive with a family feel and strong connection between staff and pupils.

Parent of Year 6 child

From the moment our daughter started, all of the teachers have been so supportive and made us feel that our daughter was very well looked after, being nurtured and was on track to achieve her full potential. It has been amazing to watch her confidence flourish. We honestly could not ask any more of the school, they are a great team and truly nurture and invest in each individual child.

ADMISSIONS & ENTRY GUIDELINES

VISITS AND TASTER DAYS

We are always pleased to arrange visits and taster days, and believe it is the best possible way to find out about the School.

A typical visit includes an informal chat with the Head, followed by a tour of the School, giving you the opportunity to view our facilities and see the pupils and teachers in action.

On a taster day, your child will be welcomed into their school year group for the day, participating in daily activities and lessons and learning first-hand what it’s like to be a pupil at Hereford Cathedral Junior School.

We also run a programme of Open Events throughout the year. Please contact the School on 01432 363511 for upcoming dates, or to arrange a visit and/or taster day.

THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS

The usual points of entry into the School are into our Nursery (from age three) and into Reception (from age four). We also regularly admit pupils into other year groups, and throughout the year, depending on places being available. Admission is by taster day (and informal testing, if appropriate), report from the child’s previous school and at the discretion of the Head.

If you would like to enter your child for admission to the Junior School, please complete the Registration Form (enclosed) and return it to the Registrar along with the registration fee. When we have received your Registration Form your child will be placed on the prospective pupil list so we can ensure that the relevant information will be sent to you at the appropriate time.

On securing a place, parents are asked to pay an acceptance deposit which will be retained in the School

funds until the pupil leaves. It will then be repaid by means of a credit without interest to the final payment of fees or other sums due to the School. The vast majority of Junior School pupils progress to the Senior School.

TRANSPORT

We offer a variety of school minibus and coach services, together with concessionary rail fares for our pupils. These affordable services provide a reliable, supervised trip into school and in addition, help to reduce the number of vehicles on the road each morning. We have several established routes available and always look to meet the needs and requirements of parents wherever possible.

For further details, please visit www.herefordcs.com/transport, call 01432 363545 or email transport@herefordcs.com.

CHORISTERSHIP AT HEREFORD CATHEDRAL

Each year, Hereford Cathedral looks for three to four boys to join the Cathedral Choir, sharing in the rich musical heritage of the School and the Cathedral.

If your son is selected for a Choristership by the Cathedral, the Dean and Chapter will offer a substantial scholarship towards the cost of his education at Hereford Cathedral School.
