Red & Yellow stakes on the golf course indicates a penalty area. Red stakes indicate a lateral water hazard (meaning it runs alongside the line of play). Yellow stakes indicate a normal water hazard that runs across the line of play. The Rules Ref will discuss options for when the ball is in a yellow penalty area. You may play the ball where it lies without penalty or take relief with a penalty stroke. Options for taking relief with penalty stroke: 1-player may take stroke & distance relief by playing a ball from where it was originally hit from.

2-player may take back on the line relief by dropping ball in a relief area based on a line straight back from the hole through the point where the ball entered the hazard. You may take one club length from the point of entry and drop or continue straight back and drop as far back as desired.
