President’s Message From: Judy Robinson
September, and we’re in the midst of fast moving construction projects. Parking lots and buildings – gone! New materials and equipment delivered daily as workmen build the new tennis courts. Look for the layout boards that are posted in the Golf Shop and in the Clubhouse. They show the physical renderings of the courts, scheduled to open in early spring of 2018 and the changing design for our campus. Meanwhile across campus, a larger (by 50%) and more level driving range has opened, making practice fun, particularly as our Golf Pros will be offering short game lessons, free clinics and a “coach” on the range for those who want to re-shape their golf games! Inside the clubhouse, new furnishings are on order. Furniture, painting and carpeting will renovate the Dining Room, Board Room and Members Dining Room. While increasing the ambience of our clubhouse, the new furnishings will also enable service for over 160 guests. Along with all these physical renovations comes the development of a “Trial Golf Membership Program”. Last year 90 % of our trial members signed up for full membership. On September 13th the BOG will host a “meet and greet” for the 47 members who have joined the club this past year. With lots of building going on in the plantation and new neighbors moving in next door or down the street, please welcome them to visit our club. Amidst these construction projects, golf members arrived on August 18th to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Robbers Row golf course. We were unprepared for the festivities planned by Heritage. From the bountiful brunch table to a course manicured beautifully to a delicious barbecue lunch, members were treated royally. Our scramble teams found strong help on several holes from long hitting golf pros. And for inspiration, the dining staff served Lynchburg Lemonades (with a taste of South Carolina bourbon) along with cheese and ham biscuits at the turn. Gathering afterwards in the Members Room, gift certificates for all participants and lovely gifts for many winners completed a celebration we all applauded. Thank you, Heritage and Staff, for creating an anniversary celebration that made history! 4
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> “September will also see beginning stages of our most important annual construction project: the 2018 PRPC Board of Governors nomination and election process. Serving as this year’s Board Nominating Committee are Chris Hall, Tricia Higgins, Jack Ray, Jack Schrader, and Marcia Schwyn. If you are interested in serving on the Board, or have a candidate recommendation, please contact one of these individuals. The Committee will complete the ballot by September 15th. A slate of candidates will be announced in the October edition of the newsletter. The membership may also nominate person(s) for election to the Board by having at least five (5) members in good standing sign a petition to add that person’s name to the slate. The petition must be in the hands of the Nominating Committee in time to meet the deadline for publishing the Slate of Candidates (September 15th ). The election will take place at the Annual Meeting on Monday, November 6th at the Club House at 7:00 P.M.” The highlight of our construction plans for September, however, is “Casino Royale,” the 2017 Heritage Golf Invitational. Scheduled for Thursday, September 28th through Saturday, September 30th, the event promises many surprises for participants. The Wormleys and Garmstons along with the Heritage team have designed opportunities to explore casinos, including delicious menus, from around the world as well as to play two well renowned golf courses. Come join us for a fun way to entertain your guests! (Please see registration on pg. 6) As I turn the pages of the calendar, I look forward to the month of September. It is my favorite time as summer stays an extra month but gives us cooler, beautiful, sunny days on our island. Take time to enjoy September!

Golf Chairman’s Report For those of you that missed the Robber’s Row 50th year celebration, you missed a very special outing. Heritage Golf truly went out of their way to make the event so good. You could hear Jon Wormley cheering, laughter and yelling from those players on the course. We had a team score 3 natural eagles! Cutting the corners, driving over the trees and reaching those Par 5’s in two. It was fun to watch and hear the cheering. I witnessed a 50-foot putt for birdie on #12. During the awards and the gifts presentation, Rick Shoemaker sharing his humor with us, invited us back for the 100th celebration and was greeted with a room of laughter. Thanks to Rick, Ben, and Ann for their efforts in making this event outstanding. As we look forward to September, 2017 we have many golfing events scheduled. The Club’s premier event, the 2017 Heritage Golf Invitational, takes place on September 28th, 29th, and 30th. If you have not signed up yet, there is still time to enjoy “Casino Royale”. The 18 Hole Ladies have their annual Sadie Hawkins golf and luncheon the second week of September. The winners of the Men’s Champions Cup head to the fabulous Heritage venue near Augusta on September 19th. On September 15th, the Club is again supporting the Neighborhood Outreach Connection charity event. Do not forget to participate and be generous. Looking ahead, I will turn my attention to the November 2017 President’s Cup championship. This is open to all our men and lady golfers. The golfer with the lowest net score on the day will be named the 2017 President’s Cup winner. I look forward to a large turnout for this event

Greetings from the Men’s Golf Committee!
I am hoping everyone is surviving the summer heat of South Carolina. While activity at the Club slows down a bit during the summer, now that it is almost September, there are a number of events planned. First of all, we have our annual Ryder Cup event. Unfortunately, Palmetto Hall has decided not to participate this year. Mike Hall Consequently, our plan is to field two Port Royal teams and play against each other. We still plan to have our “steak dinner” on Tuesday September 5th, and will play on Wednesday, September 6th and Saturday, September 9th. Lunch and awards will follow play on Saturday the 9th. More details to follow! In addition, don’t forget about the Member-Guest Heritage Invitational Tournament the end of September. It is a special event, so if you haven’t signed up yet, consider doing so. Teams that sign up by August 30th receive a special gift! Congratulations to Ed Harbauer and Carl Nelson on their victory at the Super Men’s Day event Wednesday August 16th! They teamed up to shoot a net 57 and won by three shots--great playing gentlemen The Super Men’s Day was the finale to our 2017 Champions Cup season. Don Muehlberger ended up as our Season Champion with 200 total points. Great job Don! Joining Don in earning invitations to Champions Retreat are Lanny Bailey, John Carney, Ed Harbauer, Jim Stauffer and Larry Ernst. They will participate in a Tournament at Champions Retreat the week of September 18th. They will play against other Heritage Clubs on the east coast. Best of luck to our Port Royal players! And it that is not enough, our Men’s Individual Stroke Championship will be held on October 11th and 13th. Watch for more information.

September is almost here and with it comes the time of year that so many of us look forward to with great anticipation. Cooler weather, less traffic ( sort of) and some of the events many have been eagerly awaiting. Our annual Heritage Invitational, “Casino Royale”, sounds like great fun for members and their guests. Our own Sept.12th Sadie Hawkins tournament has gotten a lot of interest and it’s still not too late to find a willing gentleman and sign up in the Brown Book. And don’t forget the free beer! Last year we were unable to have our October Wine and Rules get-together due to Hurricane Matthew. Fortunately, we were able to reschedule for Monday, October 16th. Clarissa Childs, Executive Director of the South Carolina Women’s Golf Association will be taking a look at our courses and the rules as they may impact playing on Barony and Robber’s Row. Please see the Poster in the Pro Shop and signup sheet in the Brown Book in September. More information to follow. I would like to remind everyone to sign up on time for Tuesdays. Last year our Board went to a great deal of effort to address this issue in our by-laws for very good reasons. As accommodating as Aric and Gay are it is unfair to fellow players when ladies just show up. Fellow players arrive, get settled with their equipment, their riding partner and their group and each week new cards and groupings have to be made. In some cases these new groupings throw off the balance of equity and fairness when we are playing team events. Please take this to heart and plan ahead. We also need to work as a group to corroborate score cards and hand in both cards to the Pro Shop. Thank you to all of you who continue to do all of the above. I just played after my return from the mountains. I cannot tell you how much I admire the ladies who have been able to get out there and play every week in the heat and humidity. It was so nice to see and play with old friends once again. I send all my best wishes to those of our members who are recuperating and who have been away. We miss you and can’t wait for your return. Wishing everyone a Happy Labor Day weekend!

Ladies Nine Hole Golf Association
Golf took a backseat for this report as rain suspended our play on a couple of occasions and the last surge of summer getaways took people off the course. However, Marcia Schwyn posted a couple of good outings as she won the 7/20 Individual Stroke Play with a MOC over Sally Ann Wormley and then dominated the competition with a great score of 13 in our Low Putts contest on 8/3, chipping in for a natural par on one of the holes. Way to go, Marcia! Joan Whitaker Thanks to Joan Street who was Director of the Month in August and to Marcia who helped her out. Sue Huey is DOM for September. Our Tee Time Pot Lucks were again lots of fun these past two months. Cherie Bailey hosted the Summer Beach party in July with lovely shell/flower centerpieces for the tables and Judy Blake was in charge for The Last Hurrah at the beach house in August. For the latter, we had an opportunity to look through several of the “old” picture albums from past nine- hole groups. It was indeed a walk down memory lane. As always, the food was great and many thanks go to our hostesses and to Jo Ann Gibbs who has done such a great job coordinating our monthly socials. Mark your calendar for the upcoming Tee Time, September 19. Sign up in the Pro Shop Brown Book for the golf scramble and the pot luck. Thanks to Sally Ann and Jon Wormley who will host the pot luck get together at their home, promoting a “Girl Scout” theme which means BYOB and ANY DISH you choose to share with the group. What fun it will be to find out what’s on the menu! As per our By-Laws, nominations for our 2018 Executive Committee are: President: Fermina Evans, Vice President: Kathy Jacobson, Secretary: Barbara Fratarcangelo, Treasurer: Pat Pollak. Voting will take place at our December meeting. Reminders: our Quarterly Meeting and Lunch following golf on September 7; Casino Royale, Member Guest starting September 28; our 9 Hole Club Championship October 5 and 12. Also, be sure to check out the Member Golf Clinics available during the month. Ask the Pro Shop staff for the info or see the Heritage web site for details. The clinics are a great way to improve your play and, for those who are beginners, a great way to learn the game! Last but not least, we wish speedy recoveries to all in our nine- hole family who have been experiencing ill health or recuperating from surgery. Hope to see you back on the golf course soon.

Welcome Ramon! You may have seen or even had the opportunity to work with the newest member of PRRC teaching staff, Ramon Gutierrez, out on the courts where he is enjoying great reviews. He came to Hilton to work with young tennis students at Vander Meer in 2012 and recently joined our teaching staff here at PRRC. He also works as a property manager for Marriott in Sea Pines. Tennis has always been important in Ramon’s life. He began playing as a three-year-old child at his grandparents’ tennis club, La Quinta, in Mexico, so he basically has no memory of life before tennis. Having a large family and many cousins who also played, he became competitive at a very young age. He enjoyed travelling and playing tournaments in his home country as a young child before moving to Ontario, Canada, where he attended high school and continued to play competitive tennis. Later he attended Frostburg State University in Maryland, USA, continuing both his studies and his tennis. During his first year of play at Frostburg, he won the MVP Award and his team won its conference. As a teaching pro Ramon enjoys working with all ages of players, from three-year-
old children like he was as a beginner to those who want to work on their games as long as they are able. He feels that he has learned much about teaching and coaching from his experience during the past five years and finds joy in working with a variety of people who all have different needs. However, a common problem that he has identified in many players is weak footwork, so he recommends and incorporates footwork drills to help players position themselves correctly enabling them to hit the ball better and with more confidence. You can find Ramon out on the practice courts most mornings. If you have not met him, introduce yourself, and if you need a lesson you may want to schedule it with him. Ramon is a really positive addition to our club – one who could help you improve your game!
Port Royal Racquet Club lost a long-time friend on August 16 when Lillian “Winnie” Clarke passed away peacefully at Bloom on Hilton Head Island at the age of ninety. Many will remember her involvement in our tennis club, as her legacy continues on in the Wednesday morning ladies group which she started many years ago. Prior to her involvement here, she started a youth tennis program in Dalton, MA where she and her husband Steve were instructors for many years. She is and will be remembered for her kindness and for her commitment to family and community throughout her life.
