Buds aren’t the only thing blooming come springtime. April 18th marks our official opening for the season, and many fun exhibits and events begin. Soar through the trees at the grand opening of the new Adventure Park in May. May is also when we host our annual Rhododendron Fest to celebrate our signature plant. And in June, two unique exhibits begin – The Wyeths: America Reflected, a rare collection of works by America’s “first family of art” and Secret Shelters, featuring artistic shelters tucked in hidden spaces throughout the grounds. 6 | HeritageMuseums.org

Saturday, April 18 Celebrate the return of art and artifacts from Heritage’s collection of 12,000+ items in a fresh new display. Beautiful paintings, rare objects, the carved birds by A. Driven to Collect Opening
Saturday, April 18 This exhibit of cars from the Heritage permanent collection showcases nationally significant and rare antique cars. New this year: The Collector’s Corner, featuring three very special cars from collector David Geisinger, including a 1983 Land Rover Series III Stage I, a 1966 Volvo, and a one-of-a-kind 1955 Porsche Spyder. Tuesday, April 21 – Hour-long program at 10:30 am; 12:30 & 2:30 pm Heald Center Explore the strong connection between raptors and native peoples during this exciting program presented by WINGMASTERS, which combines four live birds of prey with authentic Native American artifacts. This private collection of museum-quality Native American objects illustrates how Native cultures transformed natural materials into objects of beauty and drama such as shields, headdresses, clothing, and jewelry. Behind-the-Scenes Auto Tour
Saturday, May 9 11 am-12 pm Go behind the scenes with curator Jennifer Madden for a rare peek at Heritage’s antique auto collection in storage. During the tour, Jennifer will share little-known facts and stories about the twenty cars in this area, while participants have the opportunity to closely examine the vehicles. Rhododendron Festival
Saturday, May 16 - Sunday, May 24 10 am-5 pm Thousands of world-famous rhododendrons and an explosion of color cover the gardens with spectacular blooms during this nine-day event. Enjoy a peaceful walk surrounded by walls of flowers, learn more about Heritage’s storied rhododendron legacy, participate in programs with horticulture experts, or purchase your own rhododendron at a special plant sale. Festival Bonus: Heritage’s leading sponsor, The Arbella Insurance Foundation, will give away gardening gloves on select days while supplies last! Saturday, May 16-Sunday, May 24 – 11 am and 2 pm Meet at the Parade Field Join Docent tour guides for a 30-minute walking tour of Heritage’s renowned rhododendron collection. Discover how the work done here by two hybridizers – Charles Dexter and Jack Cowles – contributed to the genus Rhododendron and created the plants we love today, then learn about current efforts to maintain this important collection. Guides will select the most spectacular spots for viewing these stunning plants.
Rhododendron Pruning Demonstration
Saturday, May 16, Thursday, May 21, and Sunday, May 24 at 1 pm Join the Horticulture staff to learn how to selectively prune your plants to improve vigor, increase bloom density, control height, and enhance ornamental value during this 45-minute program. Discuss the tools, techniques, and timing needed for effective pruning, and watch a demonstration of techniques on various plants along a walk through the garden.
Rhododendrons in Your Home Landscape Walk and Talk
Saturday, May 16 – 12 pm, Monday, May 18 – 1 pm Discover a variety of Dexter and Cowles rhododendron hybrids, and see these plants in their mature condition. During this 45-minute informative walking tour led by Director of Horticulture, Les Lutz, you’ll learn tips and tricks for incorporating this stunning plant into your home landscape. Friday, May 22 – 1 pm While Heritage is known for its incredible collection of Dexter hybrids, there are other lesser-known species worth discovering. This 45-minute walking tour will introduce you to these versatile evergreens and how they can be used to add another dimension to your home garden.
Rhododendron Propagation Demonstration
Saturday, May 23 – 12 pm Everyone wants more of these great plants and Director of Horticulture, Les Lutz, will show how easy it can be to propagate them. Learn how and when to take cuttings and what rooting medium (soil) to use. Watch a demonstration of techniques, and leave knowing how to successfully propagate your own rhodies this fall.

Saturday, June 6 Children’s Tour – 11 am General Tours – 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm Special Exhibitions Gallery Victoria Wyeth will be the museum’s special guest on the exhibit’s opening day. The granddaughter of Andrew Wyeth and the niece of Jamie Wyeth, she will share her insights about her family’s art and stories about growing up as a Wyeth. Each afternoon tour will be followed by an opportunity to purchase the book Andrew Wyeth: Autobiography by Thomas Hoving and have it signed by Ms. Wyeth. No advance registration required. Secret Shelters Opening Tour and Reception
Sunday, June 7, 2 pm Tucked around Heritage’s trees, hills, and hidden spaces is a unique collection of artistic shelters. Celebrate this fascinating installation, chat with the artists and architects behind the exhibit during a special tour, and find out what inspired them to create these intimate spaces for contemplating nature, practicing the art of meditation, writing poetry, gazing at the heavens, and more. Saturday, June 13 Rain date: Sunday, June 14 10 am-2 pm This family-friendly event highlights antique and classic automobiles, hot rods and custom cars in excellent original or restored condition. All body styles are invited and are displayed on the Parade Field, where registered vehicles compete for awards. Cars made in Massachusetts and Ford Thunderbirds, a model celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2015, will be highlighted in special exhibit areas. Thursday, June 25 6-7:30 pm Meet David Geisinger, an auto collector whose cars are featured in the Collector’s Corner of this year’s Driven to Collect exhibit. He will share his personal collecting journey, which was partly influenced by his visits to Heritage Museums & Gardens. David will also discuss each of the collector’s cars on exhibit: a 1983 Land Rover Series III Stage One, a 1966 Volvo P1800, and a one-of-a-kind 1955 Porsche Spyder, plus another vehicle from his collection that will be displayed exclusively for this program. Join us in this new, bright, modern facility for a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) focused vacation week program that allows children to question like scientists, use technology as a tool, be creative engineers, and think like mathematicians. We’ll engage in daily STEM exploration adventures throughout Heritage Museums & Gardens, using a variety of locations and hands-on materials to explore, discover, and play. Plus we’ll conduct experiments and collect and share data about our predictions and what we discover. Themed activities each week will be appropriate for all participants. Under the Hood with Wayne Carini
Saturday, July 11 1-2:30 pm Join Wayne Carini, master restorer, owner and operator of three specialty restoration shops, and the star of the TV series Chasing Classic Cars to go inside the world of elite car restorers and collectors. He will share how his father Bob’s work as an auto restorer influenced him from a young age and will discuss his father’s early 1960s restoration of the 1927 Lincoln Sport Touring car in Heritage’s collection. This car has recently been reactivated and will be displayed especially for the program. Learn what drives Wayne’s personal collecting, and hear stories illustrating all of the collecting motives explored in the Driven to Collect exhibit, including the thrill of the chase, defining a collection, and pursuing value. Thursday, July 30 6-7:30 pm A Senior Specialist at Bonhams auction house, Evan Ide is also an accomplished automotive scholar, author, and award-winning restorer, as well as a collector. He will discuss Bugatti, a marque that holds a particular and unique fascination among collectors, and will provide an exclusive opportunity to see two examples rarely on public view – his own (currently undergoing restoration) and one from a private collector. Evan will share the history of this French manufacturer of high-performance autos, and insights on how founder Ettore Bugatti’s artistic upbringing and training influenced his automotive creations, which were as well-known for their design and beauty as for their many race victories. Wyeth on Andrew’s exquisitely crafted and emotionally haunting work and suggest ways that Jamie Wyeth, in the third generation, has re-invented the family’s DNA. Distractology 101
August 7 10 am–5 pm Don’t miss this interactive program developed by the Arbella Insurance Foundation to teach new drivers the dangers of distracted driving, including texting while driving. The campaign features a 36-foot-long, neon-yellow mobile classroom outfitted with high-tech driving simulators. During the driving simulator training, teens and other new drivers face a number of scenarios based on real-world examples, educating participants on how to anticipate hidden hazards, react to the road, and avoid accidents. Participants also complete the online portion of the curriculum at www.DistractU.com and make a safe-driving pledge in order to complete the training. August 7 – Keith Munslow An award-winning performer who combines music, storytelling, visual art, and improvisation, Keith Munslow has entertained thousands of children and adults at festivals, concerts, schools, and libraries. August 14 – The Airborne Comedians Dan Foley and Joel Harris are The Airborne Comedians. An act that began 20 years ago as a snowball juggling contest in a laundromat has now escalated to riding six- and seven-foot-high unicycles and lawn-chair juggling. August 21 – Ben Rudnick and Friends Ben Rudnick and Friends have been bringing families, music, and fun together in their own unique style since 2000. Their enthusiastic recordings and live performances seamlessly range from light folk and bluegrass to calypso, rock, and even Irish jigs. August 28 – Karen K and the Jitterbugs Bug out with Karen K in her imaginary backyard fort, where she makes music with her friends, the Jitterbugs!

In September, the Hundred Acre School begins its second year of unique STEM programming for pre-kindergarteners. And before you know it, it’s time for our Halloween Family Festival, an evening of non-scary, kid-friendly laughter and excitement that parents can feel good about. We round out the year with the awe-inspiring Gardens Aglow, filled with miles of sparkling lights. Thursday, September 3 – 6-7:30 pm David McGraw has been President of Classic Coachworks, Cape Cod’s premier auto restoration shop, for the past 35 years. He has served as a steward of Heritage’s auto collection for three decades, and has been a collector himself for even longer, having inherited his love of antique cars from his father and grandfather. He will discuss a classic automobile from his collection displayed exclusively for this event, and will share stories from his personal adventures in collecting and from his history in working with collectors, and will provide his perspective on how various approaches to restoration impact collecting value.
