Welcome We hope you enjoy these premiere works of photography being auctioned for Her Justice, to help us shift the power in favor of New York City’s lowincome women. If you are reading this, then you too believe that in a city with such a wealth of stellar attorneys and other professionals, there must also be a wealth of support to ensure that women can support themselves and their children, stop the abuse in their homes and thrive in our communities. This beautiful catalog is a testament to what happens when we join forces. Together, we change lives. I became the executive director of Her Justice last September. Since then, I have gotten to know the dedicated staff, meet our supportive partnering firms and witness clients coming to us to get the legal assistance they deserve. Thanks to you, Her Justice provides free civil legal services to over 3,000 women each year, allowing them and their children to prosper. Our work together shows that lawyers can be change agents. The decisions that are made every day in our courts are profoundly important. In five-minute hearings judges may decide whether a child can stay with a parent, whether a mother will have enough money to pay for meals, or whether an order of protection will enable someone to go home without fear. Yet 80% of the litigants in those courts do not have lawyers. When they do not have lawyers, they cannot be sure of a just outcome. Providing lawyers in civil courts is powerful. We know this because our volunteer lawyers see their clients’ lives change for the better every day. Research has shown that civil lawyers have helped to reduce domestic violence. In immigration cases, representation ensures that a mother’s determination to work and support her children on her own and on the books is recognized. In divorces and support cases, having a lawyer can ensure that children are properly fed and housed. Recently, one of our clients had her child support award increased from $50 to $950 a month once her lawyer and accountant proved the amount of her husband’s undeclared income. This result lifted our client and her two children out of extreme poverty Diversity and opportunity are hallmarks of New York City. Her Justice shifts the power so that our clients have equal access to the opportunities New York has to offer. Thank you for helping to make this possible by joining us and supporting Her Justice!

Letter from the Photography Auction Co-Chair As an auction co-chair, I wish to extend our personal thanks to the wonderful and generous galleries, artists and other art donors who make this event possible. Year after year, I am amazed by their enthusiasm for the mission of Her Justice and their commitment to helping Her Justice raise vital funds for the women and children of New York City. This year, we asked many galleries and artists to donate photographs which captured the idea of “icons,” whether iconic people, places, creatures, objects or eras. The resulting contributions include classic photos of New York and European landmarks, celebrity portraits and timeless landscapes. In addition, our featured photographers are themselves true icons. Some are famous artists from the past such as Slim Aarons, Esther Bubley and Ruth Orkin; others are acclaimed contemporary photographers with distinct points of view. We are honoring one of our most generous photographers, Bob Gruen, who has contributed his work to Her Justice for many years. Gruen is a legendary figure in the rock and roll world, having memorably chronicled every major musician from the 1960s through today. When you think of John Lennon, you picture Gruen’s most recognizable image: his 1974 shot of John Lennon sporting a sleeveless New York City t-shirt and sunglasses. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on this Lennon photo in the Live Auction and his well-known 1973 Led Zeppelin portrait in the Silent Auction as well. The lucky winner of the Lennon print will also receive two signed monographs (including his new See Hear Yoko book, also signed by Yoko Ono) and will enjoy the unique pleasure of having lunch with Gruen himself. As always, we thank the many talented, non-professional photographers who donated images to our Silent Auction. Many of these “friends of Her Justice” contribute pieces each year, and they each have a unique connection to Her Justice. We are proud to showcase them and very grateful for their support. Last but not least, we wish to thank Denise Bethel for again donating her services as our 2015 auctioneer. As everyone knows, she is an icon within the auction industry. Enjoy the auction and let the bidding begin!

Child Portrait Commission by MIRAH CURZER
Thanks to the generosity of Mirah Curzer, Her Justice is pleased to offer a private child portrait commission in the Silent Auction. Enjoy the experience of having a unique child portrait created for you and your family. Mirah Curzer is a New York-based lifestyle, documentary and fashion photographer— as well as an attorney at Jones Day. Her vast experience ranges from weddings to newborns, but she approaches each client‘s session or event as a documentary project. Curzer summarizes her style: “When I photograph people, I always chat and laugh and have fun. When I know what makes my subjects who they are, the person shines through the photos. Each session is unique; I don‘t try to duplicate photos that worked for me in the past or use set poses. Instead, even portrait sessions are documentary for me. My favorite shots are the ones in between poses, when people are most relaxed
and the emotions are truest.” She looks forward to collaborating with you to create a beautiful, oneof-a-kind photograph of your child.
Medium: Digital print. 50 digital images and one 11" x 14" print provided to purchaser. Portrait Subject: One to five subjects. Time frame and location for the portrait sitting: To be arranged at the mutual convenience of artist and sitter (before April 2016) in Manhattan or northern New Jersey. “My attorneys were like my family, always concerned about me, checking in with me, fighting for me, always on my side. When I was arrested in the middle of the night, they sprang into action despite the hour. They were with me through the worst time in my life, sitting in immigration detention at Rikers, despairing at my life and wondering how I had ended up there. They held my hand and made me feel safe.

bidding procedures & conditions of sale
bidding procedures and cond The property listed in this catalog will be offered and sold by Her Justice Inc. (“Her Justice”). Any questions should be directed to Her Justice and not to Denise Bethel, who merely serves as auctioneer for Her Justice in conducting the auction sale and participates on the following terms and conditions, as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the sale, which govern the sale of all the property offered at the auction.
LIVE AUCTION 1. The Live Auction will be held on May 6, 2015. If you are the highest bidder, please remain in place until a Her Justice volunteer obtains information identifying you as the purchaser. 2. Her Justice reserves the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Her Justice sale records shall be conclusive in all respects. 3. Some items may have minimum bids at the request of the donor, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. 4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, she may reject the same and withdraw the article for sale and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, she decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, she may reject the advance. 5. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest acknowledged bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered item subject to all of the Bidding Procedures and Conditions of Sale set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including, without limitation, damage to prints, their mounts, mats, frames or glass coverings) (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price thereof or such part as Her Justice may require.

Your payment will be processed and the Her Justice volunteer will bring you a receipt. The receipt should be exchanged for the photograph from 8:30 pm on, and prior to leaving. Photographs can be picked up from the Photo Retrieval Desk (Check-in Area, near Empire Ballroom East).

7. All auction items must be removed from the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel by the winning bidder after payment has been made on the night of May 6, 2015, unless otherwise indicated (see section #8 below).
