FY2015 Annual Report

About our work Her Justice engages the talent and resources of New York City’s law firms and corporations, bringing together committed lawyers and determined women to secure life-changing results.

Our services

A trusted partner throughout New York City

For over 23 years, Her Justice has ensured that women receive critical legal services that help them achieve safety, self-sufficiency and stability. We offer a full range of free, legal services—information, advice, brief services and full representation—in family, divorce and immigration matters to address the urgent needs of indigent women and their children, especially those who have suffered domestic violence and immigrants isolated by language and culture.

Her Justice is an on-site partner at all four of the City’s Family Justice Centers—in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens—where we provide a full range of direct legal services and work with other partner organizations (law enforcement, social services and legal services) to provide holistic assistance to abuse victims in their communities. We also partner with community-based agencies and conduct outreach clinics to reach women isolated by language and culture.

Pro bono first

Leverage makes the difference

What makes Her Justice unique is its “pro bono first” model. Her Justice specializes in offering pro bono assistance— connecting volunteer lawyers from over 80 premier firms with low-income women who desperately need a lawyer. Her Justice provides essential legal assistance to indigent women and children, as well as expert training and support for the attorneys who represent them.

Leveraging our small staff by tapping the talent and resources of private firms, Her Justice increases exponentially the number of women who go to court with their own lawyers and obtain the legal protections that they and their children need and deserve. Last year, Her Justice provided essential legal assistance to over 7,400 women and children. Every dollar donated to Her Justice delivers $6 worth of legal services.

Her Justice identifies women with cases that would result in serious injustice without legal help. Every day, our staff screens clients and identifies what legal services are most responsive to their needs—full representation from a volunteer attorney, or advice or brief services from our staff attorneys. In that way, Her Justice matches the best legal services to each client and brings the power of the legal profession to those who need it most, empowering low-income women and children to avoid homelessness and overcome poverty and abuse.

“I got my life back and a fresh start. I am now a whole person, a voice to be heard.” Her Justice client
