Welcome What a year we have had! Last year in April, you knew us as inMotion. Twelve months later, you know us as Her Justice. That transformation is reflected in our completely new website and every communication we now send, whether in print, electronically or in person. Yet while our name, tagline and logo have all changed, our purpose, our mission and the way we work with countless partners in and beyond New York City all remain the same. Our new name directly articulates the promise we make to the families whose lives you help us touch every single day. By partnering with you, we are able to give women a real chance to take control of their personal situations, improve their children’s lives and build a stronger community for us all. We truly shift the power by using our shared strength to provide each woman we serve with both resources and respect. Because of you, women can find us when they need us. Our legal team now works at all four of the city’s Family Justice Centers—in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens—where survivors of domestic violence, no matter what their cultural background or language capabilities, can walk in and find whatever legal and other supportive services they need. Believing in teamwork and leveraging every available resource, we help thousands of women negotiate our complex, confusing and chaotic legal system. Last year alone, 7,000 women and children found safety, economic security and hope for the future at Her Justice. Tonight we feature in this catalog and on the large screens around you the voices of some of these determined and courageous women. Collectively, they remind us why Her Justice matters. It is with great pride and pleasure that we welcome you tonight to celebrate the accomplishments of an organization your generous support has helped to build. We are grateful beyond words to each and every person who has helped us make this event a huge success. To our honoree, honorary co-chairs, benefit committee members, corporate partners, contributors, photographers, pro bono attorneys, art dealers and thousands of other Her Justice volunteers of all ages and skill sets—a huge THANK YOU. We are proud to present Sonia Gardner with our Her Justice Award in recognition of her lifetime commitment to the ideal of access to justice for all individuals. Sonia is the President, Managing Partner and Co-founder of Avenue Capital Group, a global investment manager specializing in alternative investments, where she is in charge of managing the firm. In 1995, Sonia formed Avenue with her brother Marc Lasry with less than $10 million in capital. Today, Avenue has over $13 billion in assets under management with its headquarters in

New York City and eight offices around the world. Avenue’s core strategies focus on distressed and undervalued debt and equity opportunities in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Distressed investing has been the focus of Sonia’s

Sonia has long assisted those in need. In college, she volunteered at a battered women’s shelter and a suicide hotline, and also served as a Big Sister mentor to underprivileged children in the community. Her commitment to volunteering and, eventually, to philanthropy, has been shaped by her own experience. Born in Morocco, she came to the United States with her family when she was four years old. Her family lived in a two-bedroom apartment, where she shared a bedroom with her brother and sister until she was in high school, as her parents both

In 2012, Sonia and Avenue enthusiastically took up the unique challenge posed by Her Justice to raise support for our work to combat domestic violence by climbing a Manhattan skyscraper. That year, in our second annual Story by Story— Climbing to End Domestic Violence, Avenue’s team of 106 climbers, the largest team ever to climb in this event, brought in $100,000, the most money ever raised by a single team. To put their contribution to Her Justice that year into context, $100,000 pays for our staff to be at one of New York City’s Family Justice Centers for three days of each week for an entire year. This translates into 350 women who can meet with Her Justice attorneys and tell their stories—350 women and their 400 children who might otherwise not be able to get the legal help they need to escape abuse and provide for their families.

How to check the price of a Silent Auction photograph Opening bid prices are indicated on pages 13–28. There is a screen in the Silent Auction viewing area (Empire Ballroom) and in the Guest Cocktail Lounge (Central Park Ballroom) which will display the bidding status for the lots, in real time. Each Silent Auction staffer (iPad Valets) can also show you the current prices on the iPads which they carry.

How to bid with our auction staff Guests can place bids with any of the Silent Auction staffers (iPad Valets) who are stationed in the Silent Auction viewing area (Empire Ballroom, 6:00–7:30 pm) and Guest Cocktail Lounge (Central Park Ballroom, 7:30–8:45 pm). During the last 15 minutes of bidding (8:30–8:45 pm), iPad Valets will also circulate among the guest tables in the Metropolitan Ballroom. Look for the staffers holding iPads and wearing silver fedoras! Each iPad Valet has an iPad programmed with the entire auction catalog and the bidding status of each lot. Simply tell the iPad Valet which item you are interested in and how much you would like to bid. You will need to supply your bidder number (which you received at Check-in). When your bid is placed, you can choose to receive a text message on your phone if someone outbids you. Making auto bids The bidding system will allow you to set a “maximum bid” for any item. Your first bid is made immediately and then raised by increments to your maximum bid. If your maximum bid equals a previous bid, the previous bidder prevails. Increments will vary with each lot. You will need to speak to an iPad Valet to set up your maximum bid.

Bidding errors In the event of bidding errors, please notify any iPad Valet. The Auction Manager has the sole discretion to discard erroneous or fraudulent bids.

Winner determination The winner is the highest bidder as registered by the Silent Auction system at the close of the auction (8:45 pm). The winning bid will be certified by the Auction Manager. If you provided your cell phone number, you will receive a text message indicating if you are the winning bidder once the auction has closed. Winners’ information will also be displayed on the screen in the Guest Cocktail Lounge (Central Park Ballroom) and the screens in the Metropolitan Ballroom. There may be a short delay between the auction closing and the winner determination. Bidders need not be present to win.

Payment and pick-up Silent Auction winners will pay for their items and confirm their personal information at the Payment Desk (Check-in Area). Winners will be issued claim checks, which are then presented at the Photo Retrieval Desk (Check-in Area, near Empire Ballroom). Silent Auction items are available 8:45–9:15 pm.

Letter from the Photography Auction Co-Chairs As auction co-chairs, we wish to extend our personal thanks to the wonderful and generous galleries, artists and other art donors who make this event possible. Year after year, we are amazed by their enthusiasm for the mission of Her Justice and their commitment to helping Her Justice raise vital funds for the women and children of New York City. We are pleased to highlight some changes in the auction this year. Our Live Auction has been significantly pared down to represent 14 exceptional selections by artists who are veterans of our past auctions and ones who are new to the Benefit. In our Silent Auction, for the first time we have included a few noteworthy non-photography items. Aperture Foundation has donated a Patron Circle membership, which is an ideal way to pursue an interest in photography. If you (or your children) love pop music, then make sure to bid on a great pair of Dave Matthews Band concert tickets for their upcoming tour. And if you need decorating advice for your home or office, Color Our World™ by Gillian Rose will provide a color consultation to one lucky winner. Bidding procedures and conditions of sale LIVE AUCTION The property listed in this catalog will be offered and sold by Her Justice Inc. (“Her Justice”). Any questions should be directed to Her Justice and not to Sotheby’s, Inc. (“Sotheby’s”), which merely serves as auctioneer for Her Justice in conducting the auction sale and participates on the following terms and conditions, as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the sale, which govern the sale of all the property offered at the auction.

2. Her Justice and Sotheby’s reserve the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Her Justice sale records shall be conclusive in all respects. 3. Some items may have minimum bids at the request of the donor, which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. 4. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, she may reject the same and withdraw the article for sale and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, she decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, she may reject the advance. 5. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, the highest acknowledged bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered item subject to all of the Bidding Procedures and Conditions of Sale set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes the risk and responsibility thereof (including, without limitation, damage to prints, their mounts, mats, frames or glass coverings) (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price thereof or such part as Her Justice may require. 6. Successful bidders should remain seated at their assigned tables until they are approached by a Her Justice volunteer, who will take their payment. Your payment will be processed and the Her Justice volunteer will bring you a receipt. The receipt should be exchanged for the photograph from 8:30 pm on, and prior to leaving. Photographs can be picked up from the Photo Retrieval Desk (Check-in Area, near Empire Ballroom).

7. All auction items must be removed from the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel by the winning bidder after payment has been made on the night of April 10, 2014, unless otherwise indicated (see section #8 below). Her Justice waives any responsibility for those items not removed by the purchaser. No items may be removed without a paid receipt. Winning Live Auction bidders departing before 8:30 pm should see the Help Desk (Check-in Area) to make delivery arrangements, at their cost. 8. In cases where the purchased item is too large to be moved by the purchaser at the end of the event, Her Justice will make arrangements with the purchaser for delivery of the oversized item after the event at the expense of Her Justice if within New York City or areas within 50 miles of New York City. Her Justice will not cover the cost to deliver oversized items to locations outside of these areas; the purchaser will pay for these out-of-area delivery charges by credit card or check at the time of shipping. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 will be the first available date for any pick up or delivery in such cases. 1. The Live Auction will be held on April 10, 2014 from 7:45 pm to approximately 8:30 pm. If you are the highest bidder, please remain in place until a Her Justice volunteer obtains information identifying you as the purchaser.

SILENT AUCTION The Silent Auction will be held on April 10, 2014 from 6:00 pm to approximately 8:45 pm. Guests can place bids with any of the Silent Auction staffers (iPad Valets) who are stationed in the Silent Auction viewing area (Empire Ballroom, 6:00–7:30 pm) and Guest Cocktail Lounge (Central Park Ballroom, 7:30–8:45 pm). During the last 15 minutes of bidding (8:30–8:45 pm), iPad Valets will also circulate among the guest tables in the Metropolitan Ballroom. 1. When your bid is placed, you can choose to receive a text message on your phone if someone outbids you. PORTRAIT COMMISSIONS Hayden M. Greene and Melissa Fry Wiedemann 1. These commissioned portraits have been donated to Her Justice by the artists. All sales are final and subject to the terms and conditions stipulated by Her Justice and the artists. 2. Purchasers are responsible for contacting the artists to arrange for their portraits with information provided by Her Justice. Purchasers will pay the full purchase price of the items at the time of the sale regardless of when work on the portraits is to be undertaken or completed. 3. Hayden M. Greene will photograph up to four child subjects at the artist’s Brooklyn studio or the sitter’s home, if artist and sitter agree. Please note that children under the age of one are preferred, but the portrait can be used for children of other ages. The photography session must take place before April 2015. Two 8" x 10" digital prints will be provided to the purchaser. 4. Melissa Fry Wiedemann will photograph one to two animal subjects in Brooklyn, New York. Please note that this portrait is intended for dogs only, but can include one cat with one dog if requested. The photography session must take place before April 2015. One 11" x 14" digital print will be provided to the purchaser. 5. The commission artists will provide services, film, printing and necessary studio assistance. The purchasers will be responsible for covering the artists’ necessary outof pocket expenses including lighting, stylists and makeup professionals, rentals and transportation, as discussed with the artists prior to the execution of the commissions. Any costs for shipping and delivery of the portraits from the artists to the purchasers are the responsibility of the purchasers. In all cases, framing arrangements and costs are the sole responsibility of the purchasers. 6. Purchasers may not request refunds or exchanges from the artists or Her Justice. 7. Other conditions of sale correspond with the guidelines for all Live and Silent Auction sales, as stipulated.

7. The amount paid by a successful bidder that may be deductible for tax purposes is limited to the excess of that amount over the estimated value of the item successfully bid upon by the bidder.
