Life Reflections
Ernestine Smith Butler was born February 3, 1935, in Hernando, Mississippi to the late Ethel and Dessie Smith. Ernestine confessed a hope in Christ at an early age at St. Mary M. B. Church. She retired from Chickasaw Warehouse and was known around South Memphis as the “Candy Lady”. Ernestine loved God and dedicated her life to Him by being a faithful member of Christ United M. B. Church where she served in the choir and on the Mother’s Board until her health failed. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to Andrew Butler and their union was blessed with eight wonderful children. Her husband, Andrew Butler, one sister, Golie Holmes and two brothers, William Holmes and Dessie Smith, preceded her in death. To cherish her precious memory, she leaves five daughters: Shirley Johnson (Johnnie), Patricia Simelton (Carl) & Marqueta Murrell (Cartrell) all of Memphis, Tennessee, Hildred Butler (Joseph) of Lithonia, Georgia, and Leshia Thompson (Jerry) of Waco, Texas; three sons: Andrew Butler (Rose) and Marrio Butler (Shaylie) of Memphis, Tennessee, and Timothy Butler of Sacramento, California; twenty-two grandchildren: LaTarsha (Tim), Andrew Jr., Trevor (Tangela), Marcus, Jerrell, Sherita, Brittany, Christina (Donovan), Tim Jr., Tangela, Racie, Brandon, Carissa, Angelica, Jerlicia, Kobe, Cariel, Darius, Amaya, Carrah, Alayna and Marrio Jr.; fifteen great-grandchildren, one sister, Ethel Anderson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.“ (Romans 14:8)
