Life Reflections
Captain Fred L. Jones was born to the late Mattie and Lawrence Jones, Sr. on April 26, 1947, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the oldest of four children and was raised by his parents in Orange Mound and Magnolia. communities He spent most of his life living in Cherokee Heights neighborhood on Harris Avenue. He departed this life on November 20, 2020, at St. Francis Hospital at the age of seventy-three. On June 11, 1966, Captain Jones married his high school sweetheart, Dr. Cheryl D. Jones, whom he loved and supported until his last days. From this union, three sons were born: Maurice D. Jones, Sr., Dwayne A. Jones, and Deushawn D. Jones, Sr. As a graduate of Melrose High School, he was an outstanding football player and played on a State Championship Team. He worked two jobs prior to becoming a firefighter for the City of Memphis. His successful participation in a 1977 class action lawsuit against the City of Memphis opened the doors for other minorities to become Memphis firefighters and receive promotions. Captain Fred Jones was the first black arson investigator and is credited with solving several hundred cases prior to his retirement after 25 years of service. Over the years, Fred owned two record shops and several real estate holdings with his wife, Cheryl. For decades “Mr. Fred� (as he was affectionately called)provided personal music compilations for friends and family from various artists throughout the year and holidays. Mr. Fred was the ultimate DJ for holiday gatherings, block parties, and a host of other events. His second passion after retirement was lawn care as he cut and treated lawns for many over the years. He spent time as a Project Manager, assisting with many tasks for the family-operated construction business. He was instrumental in daily operations and growth from inception. He was well-known and loved in the Orange Mound community for his direct candor, business savvy, and sense of humor. Fred leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. He is survived by his wife Cheryl Jones, three sons Maurice D. Jones, Sr., Dwayne A. Jones, Deushawn D. Jones, Sr. (Rhonda), brother Lawrence Jones (Martha), sister Elizabeth Jones, and was proceeded in death by his brother Alonzo Jones. A special nephew Shea D. Lee and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Fred was a proud grandfather of: Maurice Jones, Jr., Chanetra Jones, Chanice Jones, Cierrion, Deushawn Jones,
Jr., Deushea Jones, Nekiva Young. He was also a proud greatgrandfather as well.
