Obituary
Helen Leverne Dowdy Howard was born January 21, 1934, in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the youngest of ten children born to the late Joe Henry and Mary Lee Goosby Dowdy. Helen began her spiritual journey at Salem Gilfield Baptist Church. She continued that journey as a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Although unable to regularly attend services, she remained faithful to her Christian values until her demise on March 11, 2018. Helen was a proud graduate of the Booker T. Washington High School Class of 1952. Excelling as a student of cosmetology, she briefly pursued a career as a licensed beautician. In 1965, she became a LPN and worked at Methodist and the VA Hospital. Helen began her final career with the Tennessee Department of Human Services where she remained until her retirement. Helen exhibited style, grace, and courage throughout her life and found great joy in the simple beauty of life. She enjoyed reading, traveling, music, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. She will be dearly missed by her remaining sister, Josie Dowdy; three sons: Anthony (Kim), Harry (Theresa), and Robert (Christina); six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish her sweet memory.
