Earl Mimms,Jr.
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. (II Timothy 4:7-8, KJV) 6
Earl Mimms, Jr. was born June 18, 1937, to the late Earl Mimms, Sr., and Johnnie L. Mimms in Memphis, Tennessee. He was affectionately known as “Junior Mimms”. Earl grew up in South Memphis and he was an active member of Bloomfield Baptist Church. After marrying the love of his life, Bettye Jean Hunter, he united with the Mount Nebo Baptist Church in 1960 - under the leadership of Reverend Roy Love, Sr. Earl served in many positions of leadership - to include Deacon, Trustee and Sunday School teacher. His church family, tailgaters at the annual Southern Heritage Classic, and many who were affiliated with Tennessee State University reaped the benefits of his love for the culinary arts and many other activities. He was truly gifted in this area. Because of his love for baseball, he played with the West End All-Stars Neighborhood Baseball Team, which was coached by his father. As a student at Booker T. Washington High School, he was mentored by Coach William Fowlkes who was also instrumental in helping him to secure a scholarship to Tennessee State University. His successful average and outstanding talent as a baseball pitcher granted him many awards. Having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, he became and avid and responsible worker for Armour Packaging Company and the Shelby County Correctional Center. He was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Duffers Golf Club, Gutherie School’s Mentoring Program, and Shrine Moolah Temple #54. He transitioned to his Heavenly home on January 1, 2020. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, both parents, one brother (Willie V. Mimms), and two sisters (Narma Mimms and Ethel “Baby Sister” Patterson). To cherish his memory, he leaves one sister, Paula Mimms; one brother, Howard Mimms of Los Angeles, California; one sister-in-law, Wilhelmina Carter; his loving nephew and caregiver, Reverend Kevin Patterson, Sr. (Annie), and a host of other relatives and dear friends. Earl was truly a great man of love, generosity, kindness, and honor. We will truly miss this giant of a man who impacted the lives of many during his lifetime!
