Life Reflections

Minnie Ester Thames was born on July 8, 1944 to George and Elizabeth Thames in Monroe County, Alabama. She was child number ten out of eleven children. She was baptized at a young age into the Antioch Baptist Church in Atmore, Alabama. Her initial school years were spent at the Pleasant Hill Elementary School in Atmore, Alabama through the ninth grade. She then attended the Escambia County Training School in Atmore, Alabama where she sang in the choir and was homecoming queen in 1961. She later graduated from that institution in 1962. Minnie met the love of her life, Elvin Stallworth, in 1959 at a football game that she attended with her sister and a friend. Elvin made a touchdown, came off the field and it was an instantaneous connection! After completing high school, she then decided to move to New York because she wanted to ensure that she did not marry a farmer. Well, Elvin followed her to New York two weeks later. They were married on June 23, 1963, in Westbury, New York, and were members of the Bethel AME Church. Minnie attended Adelphi Business School in Mineola, New York, and graduated in 1964. She was industrious and worked in various capacities and places which included Nathan Lagan Lamp Co., Grumman Aerospace, and Park Avenue School where she was a teacher’s assistant until early retirement in 2000. Upon retirement Elvin and Minnie decided to move down south to enjoy their retirement years, and chose Huntsville, Alabama to reside. They visited several churches in the area and ended up at the Harvest S.D.A. Church and became members in 2002. Minnie was a faithful church member and served in many capacities that included a deaconess, usher, head greeter, and sung in the choir. She was truly passionate in service to all. To cherish her memory, Minnie leaves four siblings: Willie and Lillie Thames (Pensacola, FL), Theodore and Marilyn Thames (Rancho Cordova, CA), Ernestine King (Atmore, AL), Shirley Thames (Pensacola, FL); one daughter, Yolande Allen; three sons: Shacy Elvin Stallworth (Kemah), Charlie G. Stallworth (Darlene), and Tony Forney (Leslie); one granddaughter, Adia Elvie Allen; one bonus granddaughter, Jaleesa Ross; six grandsons: Tony Forney Jr., Dealoe Forney, Julian Varo, Alex Stallworth, Shacy Elvin Stallworth Jr., and Lesep Whyte; one bonus grandson, Jeremy Ross; eight great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
