REVEREND WILLIAM SMITH III, B.A., M.A., MDIV. Born May 20, 1981, in Memphis, Tennessee to the late Rev. William Smith Jr. and Minister Louise Jackson Mason, Pastor Smith is the proud Husband of the former LaTonya Michelle Pirtle and the Father of 3 gorgeous young ladies and 1 handsome son: MaKayla Dyann, LaNiya Erielle, Trinity Grace and Trent Terell. In 1991, Rev. Smith accepted his call to the ministry at the age of 9. He is a product of Memphis City Schools graduating from Hillcrest High School with honors in 1999. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Lane College. He continued his graduate studies at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee to obtain the Master of Arts degree in Education. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Phillips School of Theology at The I.T.C. (Interdenominational Theological Center) in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, he is a Doctoral Student at Memphis Theological Seminary Class of 2020. He has worked for a short period of time in the Jackson Madison County Schools. For sixteen years, Smith served and was employed at his Alma Mater (Lane College), serving in the following Staff and Administrative positions: Residential Counselor, Aid to the Office of the President, Admissions Counselor, Special Assistant to the President for Church Relations, Dean of Campus, Director of Environmental Safety and Planning/ Chaplain of the College, Director of the Security and Safety Department, Director of Community Outreach and Dean of Students, respectively. In July of 2017, Smith accepted the position of Dean of Student Success/Student Affairs at the LeMoyneOwen College located in Memphis, Tennessee. In this role, Dean Smith serves as the lead official in the Student Affairs Division; responsible for the direction, supervision and planning of all college programs in the offices of student-retention, student leadership and engagement, residence life and housing, counseling services, first and second year experiences, and campus recreation; provides executive-level leadership and vision in the administration of a comprehensive range of policies, practices, and procedures related to the implementation of services that promote student success; serves as the chief judicial affairs officer and responsible for conducting and adjudicating disciplinary hearings and assigning appropriate sanctions under the College’s policies and procedures; Serves as a member of the President’s Administrative Cabinet.
Smith III is an experienced and accomplished Pastor having been licensed and ordained both in the Baptist and Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches. As a result, he has served very effectively as Pastor of seven different churches to include Holsey Chapel Church in Gadsden, Tennessee, Trinity in Atlanta/Gainesville, GA, Capers Memorial in Nashville, TN- (The Oldest Black Church in the State of Tennessee), Collins Chapel CME Church in Covington, TN, Farmer Chapel CME Church-Downtown Brownsville, TN, Polk Chapel CME Church in Memphis, TN and Mount Olive CME Church in Somerville, TN. Prior to Pastor Smith accepting the call to lead a congregation of his own, he served as an Associate Minister at his home church, Greater New Salem Baptist Church in Memphis, TN and the Youth/Young Adult Pastor at both Eureka Truevine and Lake Grove Baptist Church also in Memphis, TN. After joining the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, in June of 2007 and 2009, Rev. Smith was ordained a Traveling Elder and admitted into Full Connection with the East Tennessee Annual Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; the highest orders a minister can receive in the denomination. Additionally, he was elected to be a Delegate to the 2010 General Conference held in Mobile, Alabama and elected to the 2018 General Conference Delegation by the First Episcopal District Annual Conferences led by Senior Bishop William H. Graves in 2010 and Presiding Prelate, Bishop Henry M. Williamson in 2017. During the West Tennessee Annual Conference 2018, Rev. Smith was appointed to serve as Pastor of Mount Olive CME Church in Somerville, Tennessee. Most recently, Smith was elected to serve as the Assistant Pastor of Berean Missionary Baptist Church, Memphis, TN (Whitehaven community) and upon the retirement of Senior Pastor, Dr. Edward Parker, Jr., Smith will become Pastor. Among many other professional and civic organizations that capture Rev. Smith’s attention, he is an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., NAACP, UNCF, Conference of National Black Churches/ Institute for Church Administration and Management, National Alumni Council of the UNCF, to name a few. His goals are to continue doctoral studies. Long term, he plans to rise in public service as an elected official locally and nationally. He dreams of being a Mayor, College President and President of the United States of America.
