Pastor Paul K. Reed “A Man After God’s Own Heart” z

In 1996, Pastor Paul K. Reed heard the voice of God and accepted the assignment to pastor the New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee with grace and dignity. From the very beginning, he has pastored New Friendship with love, patience, and compassion. Under his Godly leadership, the church has become a place of refuge, strength, and growth for all believers. As a teacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, he has demonstrated love and leadership to many – creating a warm and loving atmosphere wherever he goes. Many would agree that He is the epitome of “a Pastor according to God’s heart, who feeds God’s people with knowledge and understanding” (Jeremiah 3:15, KJV). He is highly respected and loved because of his service as a spiritual leader, father figure, and mentor to many! Born in Gary, indiana, he was adopted by the late Robert and Earline Reed of Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1977, and continued his studies as a Business Administration major at Memphis State University. He has always cherished his Christian walk and was always active in church, serving as a drummer, Sunday School teacher, deacon, and later associate minister at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor B. L. Bess. Along with his wife, Debra G. Reed, he has ministered to believers of all ages. He is also the proud father of three children: Sabrina, Brandon, and Brian. The anointing that rests upon his life is evident upon meeting him. He loves the Lord and those whom He has created, and he strives to consistently bring glory to God in his life and ministry. He is truly a man after God’s own heart. We are grateful to have Pastor Reed as our great and caring leader. With love, we commemorate this 20th anniversary as his ministry continues to make us rich in praise, power, and purpose.

The History of our Church LOOKING BACK...

In the early 1930’s, the late Reverend J. W. Powell, along with a small band of Christians were inspired by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to come together and erect an edifice to glorify the Lord in. Some of the organizers of the church included Deacon Joe Mason, Deacon Prather, Deacon Wallace Sanders, Deacon John Beard, Deacon George Dewey, Sister Nancy Sanders, Sister Lelia Smith, Sister Rosa Weston, Brother Son Carr and Brother John Moore. After the death of Pastor Powell, the congregation elected several ministers to feed our souls from the Word of God, including Rev. Jones, Rev. Frank Mayfield, Rev. Sanford, Rev. Edward, and Rev. Dawson. In 1959, the congregation elected Rev. Booker T. Higgins as the leader of this Christian flock. At various periods of time during the church’s existence, we found the need to worship at various locations. The first building, constructed of wood and tar paper, could not withstand the elements. Therefore, the membership held its services at St. Luke Baptist Church and the J. W. Wilson Funeral Home while a new edifice was being constructed at 1497 Gold Avenue. Following the election of Pastor HIggins, and under his leadership, the congregation voted to build a new edifice on this site. The congregation co-worshipped with the Pillow Street CME Church for three months while the new edifice was under construction. On September 19, 1960, the congregation marched from Pillow Street to the new building at 1497 Gold Avenue. The congregation voted to change the name from Peter’s Rock Missionary Baptist Church to New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. On January 14, 1996, our present Pastor, REV. PAUL K. REED, was elected to serve as our spiritual leader and was duly installed on September 15, 1996. Pastor Reed has proven himself to be a leader with great vision. Under his leadership, a new edifice was erected at our present location, 1490 Gold Avenue. The church continues to grow spiritually, financially, and numerically. We are truly grateful for God’s marvelous blessings bestowed upon our church, our rich heritage and renewed determination to reap a great harvest of souls to bring glory and honor to our Lord.
