Church History “This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.” (Psalm 118:23, KJV)
The year was 1917. Women were fighting for the right to vote. Marcus Garvey had begun the “Back to Africa Movement”, Woodrow Wilson was President, and the United States entered World War I. Despite the challenges of the times (or maybe because of them), a small group consisting of Mr. John Hamon, Mr. Will Philip, Mr. Henry Nabors, Mr. John Peoples, Mr. Lee Smith, Mr. Richard Bryant, Ms. Lula Page, Ms. Mattie Dixon, Ms. Winnie Norton, Ms. Ruth Flowers, Ms. Eliza Thomas, Ms. Pearelee Flowers, Ms. Bell Matthew, Ms. Delia Crawford and Mother Bryant met under a tree in the front yard of Mr. John Hamon on Sunday, March 25, 1917, to lay the groundwork for establishing this church. One week later, on April 1, 1917, this group gathered for their first worship service at a church located on the corner of St. Paul Avenue and Suzette Street. This was the start of Union Missionary Baptist Church, organized under the leadership of Rev. W. M. Thomas. At this time, no permanent building had been acquired. Until 1919, Zion Hall on Beale Street was one location where services were held. In 1919, while still under the leadership of Rev. Thomas, the membership marched from Zion Hall to the Old Tabernacle Church on Turley Street. Rev. Thomas served as pastor for four years and the congregation grew under his guidance. Subsequent pastors included Rev. B. O. Davis, Rev. J. M. Madison, Rev. R. B. Hayes, Rev. W. E. Mack, Rev. Calvin Perkins, Rev. S. L. A. Jones, and Rev. L. M. Johnson. In 1938, Rev. B.J. Perkins was elected pastor; the congregation flourished during his tenure. He led until his death in 1955. In July 1955, Rev. J. W. West was elected pastor, and he took us to higher ground.
At this time our location was at 208 Turley Street. Then, the Memphis City Housing Authority notified us that inner-city development would require that we relocate, so Rev. West began negotiations for a new worship center. Unfortunately, he passed away on November 18, 1969, before the negotiations were completed. Because Deacon M. A. Young had been assisting in the negotiations, he was authorized to continue that effort. In 1970, on the second Sunday in February, we moved to our current location here at 102 E. Brooks Road. In March of 1970, we elected Rev. R. E. Plunkett as our shepherd. Rev. Plunkett was a powerful preacher, leader, and teacher not only here at Union Missionary Baptist Church but also throughout the city and region. He held numerous leadership positions with the Baptist Ministerial Alliance and the Baptist Conference. The Union Missionary Baptist Church Day Care Center, which opened in 1971, is indicative of his leadership and vision. Records validate that it was the first of its kind in the Whitehaven/Walker Homes area. Later, Pastor Plunkett guided the church through a major overhaul and renovation. Then, disaster struck. On Wednesday, May 24, 1994, at 4:44a.m., our church was destroyed by fire. During the time it took to rebuild, we held worship services in the Day Care Center. On April 16, 1995, we held our first worship service in this building. On December 9, 2005, due to failing health, Rev. Plunkett announced his upcoming retirement. He recommended Rev. Leonard B. Sharp as his successor and asked for the congregation’s approval. With plans to preach his final sermon just before Christmas, God called him home on December 24th before he could deliver that sermon. It is obvious that he still had another vision for the church that he so dearly loved and faithfully served. On February 5, 2006, the final vision was fulfilled. Rev. Sharp was installed as the beloved pastor of the Union Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Sharp also has visions and dreams for this great church. With God’s continued blessings, grace, and mercy upon us, they too will be manifested in the years to come. “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen” - Ephesians 3:20-2

Sunday, February 12, 2017 To the Members of Union Missionary Baptist Church: One hundred years ago, a small group of African-American men and women gathered together under a tree in the front yard of Brother John Harmon to lay the groundwork to organize this church. As we celebrate this centennial church anniversary, we can truly say, “We’ve come this far by faith!” Union Missionary Baptist Church is built upon a firm foundation of faith, with Jesus Christ being the Chief Cornerstone. We have not made it this far by ourselves, but there have been many who have gone on before who have paved the way for where we are in the year 2017! The Lord has brought us a mighty long way, and because He will not leave nor forsake us, we know that the future of our church is blessed! As we look to the future, as those who came before us, it is important to know that what we do today will have a far reaching impact on people who we do not even know. Reflecting on the ministry of days gone by helps us to see the fruit of the labor of many. We pray that the fruit of ministry will touch hundreds and thousands as we remain committed to Christ. I am honored to serve as your Pastor, and salute you on this special occasion! In Christ,
Leonard B. Sharp
Pastor Leonard B. Sharp, Senior Servant
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. (Colossians 3:15, KJV)
Reflections First Lady from the
This Centennial Celebration of Union Missionary Baptist Church is truly a great milestone for both the church and community! It is a milestone that many aspire to, but only a few accomplish. It is one that should be celebrated with the community and beyond! It has been my pleasure to serve with my sisters and brothers in Christ at Union Baptist. You are truly family, and I cherish the bond that I have made with each of you. Today, we celebrate the glorious legacy that continues to inspire us, and we are optimistic about the continued impact and relevance in shaping and enriching the lives of people, both young and old, through the Word of God! Special acknowledgment is extended to all who have labored to make this celebration a most memorable one, and to those who are celebrating with us today in spirit. To God be the glory for the GREAT things He has done throughout the rich history of the little church on the hill, doing God’s will. I love you all!

Light up the room with your smile. Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease—and can help you keep your teeth. An outstanding dentist will explain problems and options so you can take part in making decisions about your care. The Clayborn family would like to thank you for making us feel so welcome here in the house of the Lord. We were part of the Union Baptist family for a very long time. While we were here, we felt like we were at the little shack by the railroad track. We had some good times in this church, singing and praising the Lord! What a joy we had here! As you celebrate this significant event, we wish you all the best! Your best days are still ahead. You are celebrating a milestone. May God bless you mightily and abundantly.
