DESCRIPCIÓN E HISTORIA DEL MONUMENTO ESPAÑOL Es un gran anfiteatro de la época del Imperio Romano, construido en el siglo I en el centro de la ciudad de Roma. Por sus características arquitectónicas, estado de conservación e historia, el Coliseo es uno de los monumentos más famosos de la antigüedad clásica.

Fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1980 por la Unesco.

Se encuentra en la Plaza del Coliseo.

Se encuentra en el cruce de las calles Vía del Babuino desde el norte, por el este Vía del Condotti y por el sur Vía dei Due Macelli y Vía della Propaganda.

Se encuentra al lado de la Fontana dei Fuimi. La plaza sigue el trazado de un antiguo estadio, el Stadium de Domiciano, del siglo I. Definida como plaza en los últimos años de los años del siglo XV, cuando se trasladó el mercado desde el Capitolio aquí, la plaza Navona pertenece a la etapa barroca romana, concretamente del papado de Inocencio X.

En el 19 a.C., supuestamente con la ayuda de una virgen, los técnicos romanos localizaron una fuente de agua pura a solo 22 kilómetros de la ciudad.

Esta Aqua Virgo corría por el acueducto mñas corto de Roma directamente hasta los Baños de Agripa y fue usada durante más de cuatrocientos años.

Es el más importante edificio religioso del catolicismo, tanto en términos de volumen (193 metros de longitud y 44,5 metros de altura) como de renombre. No es la catedral de la diócesis de Roma, pero sí es la iglesia del Papa, en la cual celebra las ceremonias litúrgicas más importantes. En la basílica estaría enterrado San Pedro, el primer Papa, según las investigaciones realizadas por la arqueóloga y epigrafista Margherita Guarducci en 1965.

Bajo el mandato del emperador Claudio, fue la base militar de su puerto, construido en forma hexagonal, para mitigar la fuerza de las olas.

Ostia creció hasta 50.000 habitantes y tenía todas las comodidades de una ciudad de puerto.
