NICK BRANDT
Born and raised in England, Nick Brandt studied painting and then film before moving to America in 1992 to direct many award-winning music videos for artists such as Michael Jackson, Jewel and Moby. It was while directing Michael Jackson’s music video ‘Earth Song’ in Tanzania in 1995 that Nick fell in love with the animals and landscape of East Africa. Frustrated by his inability to truly capture his vision of the animals on film, he realised that there was a way to do this through photography. In 2000, Nick embarked upon an ambitious photographic project: a trilogy of books memorialising the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa. The first two parts of the trilogy were published as ‘On This Earth’ (2005) and ‘A Shadow Falls’ (2009). And then were COVER IMAGE: RANGER WITH TUSKS OF KILLED ELEPHANT
combined together in 2010 as ‘On This Earth, A Shadow Falls’ which combined the most celebrated images from the original two books.

Across the Ravaged Land is the third and final volume in Nick Brandt’s trilogy of books documenting the disappearing natural world and animals of East Africa. The book’s title completes the sentence begun by the titles of his first two books:

Big Life has now expanded to employ 315 rangers, with 31 outposts and 15 vehicles protecting 2 million acres of wilderness in the Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystem of East Africa.
