President Anthony J. DiGiorgio Now in his 23rd year as president of Winthrop University, Dr. Anthony J. DiGiorgio believes that attaining excellence requires three things: • caring more than some might think is wise, • risking more than some might think is safe, and • dreaming more than some might think is practical.

“We at Winthrop encourage excellence in all endeavors, both in the classroom and in the playing arena.”

That approach has resulted in Dr. DiGiorgio now being the longest- serving president of any public university in South Carolina, while Winthrop University has grown from a regional college with a venerable history to a national-caliber comprehensive university that helps set the pace for quality higher education. Today, Winthrop University is regularly rated among the top public institutions of its kind in the South by U.S. News and World Report, winning accolades for:  academic excellence  emphasis on students’ personal character development  commitment to diversity  award-winning student programming  sound fiscal management, and  overall institutional excellence.

National publications, including Barron’s Best Buys and The Princeton Review, also rate Winthrop University among the “best buy, best value” institutions in the nation. U.S. News and World Report in 2010 also named Winthrop to its “Keep An Eye On These Schools” list of institutions that have recently made “the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.” Some of the University’s notable accomplishments during Dr. DiGiorgio’s tenure include:  the designation change from Winthrop College to Winthrop University in 1992;  Winthrop’s first capital campaign, which raised $31.2 mil-

lion for scholarships, academic program enhancements and more faculty development and research opportunities; more than $120 million in capital building projects that have adapted the University’s historic campus to contemporary needs, including a new Life Sciences Building; The Courtyard residence hall; Owens Hall, a general use academic building; the West Center for Health, Physical Education and Wellness; Carroll Hall, an academic facility for the College of Business Administration, the Culp Chiller Plant. and the DiGiorgio Campus Center, named for President DiGiorgio and his wife, Gale.

Dr. DiGiorgio began his presidency by articulating a “Vision of Distinction” for Winthrop, then leading the university community in designing a series of annual work plans that advance the goals encompassed by the vision. Each new year’s work plan builds on the foundation of the previous year’s achievements. DiGiorgio likens it to a family’s achievements, with each new generation building on the foundation of its elders — an observation drawn from his own youth. The son of an immigrant bricklayer, Dr. DiGiorgio was born in Sharon, Pa. Like many immigrants to America, the DiGiorgios found that hard work and persistence were the keys to survival – key elements that characterize the DiGiorgio leadership style today. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Gannon College, Dr. DiGiorgio earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University, where he later became an instructor and Assistant to the Dean of Humanities, Social Science and Education. In 1970, he began 19 years of service at The College of New Jersey, where he served in a number of positions, including Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. DiGiorgio has served two terms on the board of directors of the NCAA Board and its executive committee, as well as two terms as president of the Big South Conference, He currently chairs the Membership Committee. In addition, he has served on the board of directors of the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, Richmond District, and in 2009-2010 began a second term on the board of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, a regional economic development organization serving 2.5 million people in both Carolinas.

Season Outlook

Eagles’ Season Goals Attainable Entering 2011-12 Campaign

Winthrop head coach Kevin Pendley enters his sixth season with the men’s golf program, and is very excited about his 2011-12 squad after a solid fall season on the golf course. “I am looking forward to seeing our guys compete this year,” he said. “We had some very good moments and some not so good moments, and we need to be more consistent but have the guys to get the job done.” Pendley is looking forward to the spring season and seeing which of his players will step up, and help the Eagles capture a Big South Conference Championship. He also feels the spring will be an exiciting time for Winthrop since the goals the team has set out for itself are within reach. “Our focus this season is to get better every day and focus on the things we can control…our effort level, focus, preparation, etc,” he stated. “When we do that, we play well. The weeks we struggled we did not prepare well or had distractions on and off the course. I am looking forward to seeing who steps up and who goes the extra mile. All of our goals are in front of us and attainable, and that is exciting. It should be a fun season.” The Eagles started the 2011 fall season on a positive note picking up its first team victory at The Maryland Intercollegiate while also having two of their players, sophomore Damon Postal (Blythewood, SC/Blythewood H.S.) and

freshman Taylor Dickson (Gastonia, NC/Forestview H.S.), tie for first place at the tournament. The first place finish by Winthrop was the team’s first win since the 2007-08 season, and the first place finishes by Postal and Dickson were also the first by an individual player since Kelly Manders in 2007-08. Postal also set a school record at The Maryland Intercolegiate with a low round of 63, breaking the previous mark of 64 set by Manders in 64. He was one of three players on the roster to play in all 12 rounds during the fall, and finished eighth in the Big South in scoring average. Dickson compiled the second-best mark for Winthrop in the fall with a 74.50 stroke average and one top 10 finish, and his best round of 65 is tied for thirdlowest in program history. He also joined Hirai in playing a team-best 12 rounds. Big South Conference

The Big South Conference has enjoyed unprecedented achievements and unparalKYLE KALLANDER DAWN TURNER leled success in league history over the Commissioner Assoc. Commissioner past few years. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) athletic director Howard Bagwell and Augusta president George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was the Fall of 1984, and in September, 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. The league received its first automatic bid in 1990 to the NCAA Baseball Championship. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner. Under Sasser’s leadership, the conference implemented its first public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third commissioner, and in is 12 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the conference to new levels. The conference’s onfield accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of the conference’s student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 gradepoint average, and the league has had almost 100 Academic AllAmericans in its quarter-century of existence. The conference is made up of 11 full-time members which include Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Liberty, UNC Asheville, Presbyterian College, Radford, VMI and Winthrop.
