Steeped in tradition, Winthrop is a public institution with regional prominence. At Winthrop, students excel in an academic environment that is second to none among South Carolina’s senior colleges and teaching universities. Unique academic course offerings and modern, well-equipped facilities guarantee a national-caliber education. With all that Winthrop has to offer, it should be no surprise that U.S. News & World Report has ranked Winthrop as a top ten Southern regional public university for 20 consecutive issues while Consumer Digest ranks Winthrop as one of the top 50 Best Values in Colleges and Universities.

ounded in 1886, Winthrop University is rated as one of the top regional higher education institutions in the nation. The picturesque campus is ideally located in the beautiful upstate section of South Carolina in the growing city of Rock Hill and only 30 minutes from Charlotte, North Carolina. Winthrop’s 100-acre main campus and its 300-acre athletic complex is home to a student body that numbers nearly 6,400. Winthrop is large enough to offer a wide range of academic and extra-curricular opportunities found at larger universities while at the same time small enough to encourage personal interaction with professors and staff. 4

President Anthony J. DiGiorgio Now beginning his 23rd year as president of Winthrop University, Dr. Anthony J. DiGiorgio believes that attaining excellence requires three things: • caring more than some might think is wise, • risking more than some might think is safe, and • dreaming more than some might think is practical.

“We at Winthrop encourage excellence in all endeavors, both in the classroom and in the playing arena.”

That approach has resulted in Dr. DiGiorgio now being the longest- serving president of any public university in South Carolina, while Winthrop University has grown from a regional college with a venerable history to a national-caliber comprehensive university that helps set the pace for quality higher education. Today, Winthrop University is regularly rated among the top public institutions of its kind in the South by U.S. News and World Report, winning accolades for:  academic excellence  emphasis on students’ personal character development  commitment to diversity  award-winning student programming  sound fiscal management, and  overall institutional excellence.

National publications, including Barron’s Best Buys and The Princeton Review, also rate Winthrop University among the “best buy, best value” institutions in the nation. U.S. News and World Report in 2010 also named Winthrop to its “Keep An Eye On These Schools” list of institutions that have recently made “the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.” Some of the University’s notable accomplishments during Dr. DiGiorgio’s tenure include:  the designation change from Winthrop College to Winthrop University in 1992;  Winthrop’s first capital campaign, which raised $31.2 mil-

lion for scholarships, academic program enhancements and more faculty development and research opportunities; more than $120 million in capital building projects that have adapted the University’s historic campus to contemporary needs, including a new Life Sciences Building; The Courtyard residence hall; Owens Hall, a general use academic building; the West Center for Health, Physical Education and Wellness; Carroll Hall, an academic facility for the College of Business Administration, the Culp Chiller Plant. and the DiGiorgio Campus Center, named for President DiGiorgio and his wife, Gale.

Dr. DiGiorgio began his presidency by articulating a “Vision of Distinction” for Winthrop, then leading the university community in designing a series of annual work plans that advance the goals encompassed by the vision. Each new year’s work plan builds on the foundation of the previous year’s achievements. DiGiorgio likens it to a family’s achievements, with each new generation building on the foundation of its elders — an observation drawn from his own youth. The son of an immigrant bricklayer, Dr. DiGiorgio was born in Sharon, Pa. Like many immigrants to America, the DiGiorgios found that hard work and persistence were the keys to survival – key elements that characterize the DiGiorgio leadership style today. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Gannon College, Dr. DiGiorgio earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University, where he later became an instructor and Assistant to the Dean of Humanities, Social Science and Education. In 1970, he began 19 years of service at The College of New Jersey, where he served in a number of positions, including Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. DiGiorgio has served two terms on the board of directors of the NCAA Board and its executive committee, as well as two terms as president of the Big South Conference, He currently chairs the Membership Committee. In addition, he has served on the board of directors of the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, Richmond District, and in 2009-2010 began a second term on the board of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, a regional economic development organization serving 2.5 million people in both Carolinas.

The Lady Eagles also tied a school record for having the most players earn a conference postseason honor as six Winthrop athletes were recognized. The Lady Eagles set a school record in 2010 by shutting out an opponent in five straight matches, and also tied a school mark set in 2006 for most consecutive victories with five. Courtney Durbin’s eight goals last year were the most by a Winthrop player since Chelsea White netted the same total during the 2007 season. She finished tied for fourth in the conference last season in goals. “We are very pleased to have Spencer Smith as our women’s soccer coach,” said athletic director Tom Hickman at Smith’s introductory press conference on Feb. 9, 2010. “He has proven over 21 years of coaching that he can produce winning programs and championship-level teams in men’s soccer, and we believe he can bring that same success to the Winthrop women’s program. He has a history of developing players on the field as demonstrated by the number of All-Conference performers he produced at Radford, and he has a strong record of producing successful student-athletes in the classroom as well.” During his 16 season with the Highlanders, the program made two NCAA College Cup appearances as well as one Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and two runnerup finishes. 2011 Season Outlook

Eagles Aim For First NCAA Tournament Bid In Year Two Of Spencer Smith Era The Winthrop women’s soccer team captured its second Big South Regular Season title last year in its first season under head coach Spencer Smith after posting a 7-10-2 overall record and 6-2-1 conference mark. The six conference wins match a school record for most Big South wins in a season after going 6-1-1 in 2006 and winning its first Conference Regular Season crown. The Eagles finished the regular season in a fiveway tie for first place with Radford, High Point, Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina, but by virtue of a tie-breaker Winthrop was able to garner the No. 1 seed for the Big South Conference Tournament. It was only the second time in program history that the Eagles received the top seed for the conference tournament as the 2006 squad did the same. The 2010 season started slowly for Winthrop going 0-7-1 heading into Big South Conference play, but from that point on the Eagles went 7-3-1 during the final 11 contests and had six players on All-Conference teams. Winthrop had three players (Courtney Durbin, Allie VandeWater, Katie Perkinson) named First Team All-Conference (tied for school record), one Second Team All-Conference (Tricia Vensel), one All-Freshman Team (Anna Sammons) and one All-Academic Team (Rachel Webster). Smith also picked up his third career Coach of the Year honors, but was his first coaching women’s college soccer. The 2011 squad returns eight starters from last season while welcoming nine new additions, but will have to replace four starters in Vensel, Perkinson, Lindsay Taylor and Tiana Tallant. Vensel finished 2010 tied for the team lead with four assists and was second with four goals, and Perkinson started all 19 games. Taylor joined Perkinson in starting 19 games, while Tallant recorded a career-high two goals. Not only will the Eagles have to replace four starters from last season, but they will also be without the services of Sammons for the entire season as she suffered a knee injury. Here is a look at the 2011 Winthrop women’s soccer team, and who will occupy each position this season: Goalkeeper The Eagles began last season by rotating the starting goalkeeper position with redshirtsenior Kelsy Weavil and junior Sarah Schippers until the beginning of Big South play where Weavil took the reins and helped lead Winthrop to five of its six conference victories.

Weavil compiled four shutouts on the season, all of which came in consecutive Big South matches, and allowed just three goals in her eight starts in conference play. Overall, she started 14 games on the season and snagged 62 saves to go with her 0.97 goals against average. Weavil also had a save percentage of .816 in 2011, which ranked her fourth in the Big South. She snagged a season-high eight saves twice against Marshall and at High Point. Schippers appeared in a career-best six games with five starts last season, and tallied 28 saves for a save percentage of .778 to go with her 1.45 goals against average. She produced her first collegiate victory in net in the Eagles 2-1 conference-opening victory over Gardner-Webb last season, while grabbing a career-high eight saves twice against Georgia State and South Carolina State. Freshman Amelia Henderson will provide depth at the goalkeeper position this season, but is expected to be redshirted.

for the Big South in points (18), goals (8) and game-winning goals (5). Durbin notched two multi-goal games last season, both coming against VMI in the regular season and Big South Tournament, and scored all eight of her goals in conference games. She appeared in all 19 games with 18 starts, and was second on the team with 38 shots. Junior Lia Gordon, redshirt-sophomore Gabrielle Corn and sophomore Caroline Myers also return up top for Winthrop, providing it with more veteran presence as all three appeared in a combined 32 games last season. All three came off the bench in 2010 with Gordon playing in all 19 contests, Corn in seven and Myers in six. Corn tallied the only points out of the three with her first collegiate goal in a loss to Appalachian State in last season’s opening weekend. Gordon did attempt 11 total shots including a season-high two at High Point, while Myers took her only two shots at Presbyterian College. The forward position will welcome four freshmen to the mix in 2011 including Yoella Lopez, Grace Radler, Krystyna Freda and Devin Puckett. Lopez, Radler and Freda are expected to play primarily at forward, while Puckett will pull double-duty between the position and defender.

Sarah Schippers Forwards Right before conference play began last season, Smith made several personnel changes to help Winthrop produce more goals after scoring just four in its first six games. One move included moving Durbin, who was playing defender at the time, up top to one of the two forward positions. The move paid off as the Eagles netted 16 goals in their final 12 games, with eight of those coming from Durbin. The eight goals by Durbin were a career-high for her and most by a Winthrop player since Chelsea White scored eight in 2007. She finished 2010 ranked in the top 10

17

Courtney Durbin Midfielders The midfield position returns three of its four starters from last season including VandeWater, Webster and redshirt-sophomore Kylene Babauta. All three contributed significantly in the midfield for the Eagles in

2011 Winthrop Women’s Soccer Media Guide

2011 Season Outlook 2010, with VandeWater and Webster tying for the team-lead in assists at four each. VandeWater was third on the team in goals and points, while Webster was fourth in goals and points. Webster has become a stalwart on the left side of the midfield starting in 58 of her 60 career games played and could become the all-time leader in games started after the season is done. She dished out a career-high two assists against VMI last season in the Big South Tournament. VandeWater also set a career-best in assists last year and recorded two in Winthrop’s season-opener against Marshall. She started in all 19 contests in 2010, with both of her goals coming at South Carolina State and UNC Asheville. Babauta missed her freshman season in 2009 due to an ACL injury but came back last season and played in all 19 games with 15 starts, including 13 of those games consecutively. She recorded her first collegiate point with an assist against VMI in the Big South Tournament. Junior Ariel Kunde returns after missing 12 games last season due to an ACL injury. She did start in seven of eight games and tallied four shot attempts before suffering the injury. Corn, Freda and junior Kylie Long, will also be looked upon to contribute off the bench at midfield. Long appeared in all 19 games in 2010 with three starts, and attempted seven total shots. Freshmen newcomers in the midfield expected to contribute right away are Ashley Herndon, Kelly Clark and Tori Davis. Clark missed all of last season after suffering an ACL injury.

ence is senior Nichole Smith, who started in 12 games last season and appeared in 16 overall. Smith was one of the players inserted in the starting lineup on a permanent basis beginning with the South Carolina State game and played a crucial role in the Winthrop defense holding opponents scoreless in five consecutive games. One personnel move that Smith made in the off-season was to move sophomore Megan Pritts to one of the four defender positions taking the place of Sammons. Pritts made 15 starts last season as a midfielder, and compiled three points on one goal and one assist. Smith and Pritts will be looked upon to anchor the back line for the Eagles as two new starters are inserted into the lineup. Junior Daria Borowski and redshirt-sophomore Rebecca Hamm will also add depth in the back. Borowski appeared in four games last season with three starts, while Hamm played in one contest. Newcomers at the defender position include Herndon, Kjersti Traaen, Okina Crawley and Annie Renaud. Expect Herndon to contribute more as a defender, while Traaen redshirted last season after suffering an ACL injury. Crawley is a sophomore who transferred to Winthrop after playing last season for Big South member Coastal Carolina.

Nichole Smith

Allie VandeWater Defenders The back line of defense for the Eagles will have a completely different look in 2011 after losing Sammons for the season along with Perkinson and Taylor to graduation. The lone defender returning with starting experi-

Schedule The Eagles will open their 2011 season with two exhibition games against Wofford College and Catawba College. Winthrop will face the Terriers at home on Aug. 12 and at the Indians on Aug. 16. The regular season for the Eagles will begin at home on Aug. 19 against the Georgia Southern Eagles before hitting the road for two consecutive matches to end the month of August against The Citadel Bulldogs (Aug. 25) and College of Charleston Cougars (Aug. 28).

18

The month of September for Winthrop will begin in Florence, SC against the Francis Marion Patriots (Sept. 4) before returning home on Sept. 9 against the USC Upstate Spartans. The other two home games for the Eagles in September come against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (Sept. 17) and South Carolina State Bulldogs (Sept. 21). The remaining road games in the month are against the Western Carolina Catamounts (Sept. 11) and the Big South opener with the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Sept. 27. The Campbell Camels (Oct. 1) will come to Eagle Field to open the month of October. Campbell is returning to the Big South Conference in 2011 after previously participating in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Following the matchup with the Camels, Winthrop will host defending Big South champion High Point Panthers on Oct. 6 and Liberty Flames on Oct. 8 in back-to-back home conference games. The Eagles will then hit the road for two straight road contests against the VMI Keydets (Oct. 13) and Radford Highlanders (Oct. 15) before hosting the Presbyterian College Blue Hose (Oct. 20) and UNC Asheville Bulldogs (Oct. 22) in their final home games of the 2011 season. Winthrop wraps up its regular season on the road against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (Oct. 27) and Charleston Southern Buccaneers (Oct. 29). The 2011 Big South Conference Women's Soccer Championship will be hosted by Charleston Southern and played at Blackbaud Stadium, home to the USL PRO League’s Charleston Battery.

The Big South Conference

Developing Leaders Through Athletics

KYLE KALLANDER Commissioner

JAMES COMPANION Assoc. Commissioner

DAWN TURNER Assoc. Commissioner

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month MARK SIMPSON NIC BOWMAN later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first CommisAsst. Commissioner Assistant Diretor of sioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to of Public Relations Public Relations the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distintive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.
