Sherman Eller
Class of 2000
Class of 2008
Steven "Skip" Frye came to USCS in the fall of 1973 and competed in three sports over the next eight months. Frye was one of the best all-around athletes in the university's history, competing in cross country, basketball and baseball. He was a teammate of Robert "Firechief" Smith's on the 1973-74 basketball team, and also played baseball that spring. As a runner, Frye was a NLCAA Cross Country All-American in 1973 and 1974. He was named to the NAIA Cross Country All-District Second team in 1977 and 1978, and the Third team in 1976. He led the 1977 squad to the NAIA District Championship, the first for a USCS cross country team. Frye is currently a teacher at Broome High School, where he is also the head cross country coach for both boys and girls, and the boys track coach. He has won numerous Coach of the Year awards at the high school level.
Sherman Eller is the third person affiliated with the cross country program to be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame at USC Upstate. He is also the second inductee to have both been a runner and coach at the University. Between running and coaching, he helped lead the team to four NAIA District Six team championships and four appearances in the NAIA National Championships. Eller was a standout runner on the cross country team from 1981-84. He was a three-time NAIA District Six All-District selection. He led the team to the district championship as a freshman and an appearance in the NAIA National Championships, earning All-District honors along the way. As a junior, he led the squad to the team championship in the district meet, finishing third individually and earning his second All-District honor. The team made its second appearance in the NAIA National Championships. He finished his running career with an All-District selection as a senior while leading the team to a second-place finish in the district championships. After completing his career as a collegiate runner, Eller took a turn as the head coach of the cross country program from 1985-87. He led the team to an unblemished record in district competition en route to the NAIA District Six championship, while runner Thomas Odom earned individual title in 1985. Eller was named the district's Coach of the Year. The cross country team repeated as District Six champions in 1986 with Odom again winning the individual title. The team received votes in the national poll after earning its second straight trip to the NAIA National Championships. Eller earned the District Six Coach of the Year award for the second straight season. In addition to his coaching stint with the cross country program, he also coached the softball team in 1985 and 1986. The Niceville, Fla., native returned to his home state after resigning his position as head coach of the cross country program in 1987. He returned to Florida to pursue a career in the athletic footwear business as a management trainee with the Athletic Attic. He was hired as an account executive for Nike in 1989 and will celebrate his 19th year with the company later this year. Working as the account executive with Hibbett Sporting Goods, Eller was named the Nike Rep of the Year in 2005. Eller returned to his cross country roots earlier this year as the head coach of his alma mater, Niceville High School. After a successful season, he was named the Coach of the Year by the Northwest Florida Daily News. Eller married his high school sweetheart, Laurie. The couple has five teenagers: sons Kyle, Cory and Trent; and daughters Lacey and Lindsey.
Michael Massey
Class of 2001 Michael Massey is USCS' most accomplished cross country runner. The only cross country runner to have achieved AllDistrict Six honors four times, he was named USCS' Senior Athlete of the Year in 1981. He also served as the school's Senior Class President. Massey went on to coach at USCS from 1990-95. He led the Rifles to three Peach Belt championships and three Top 10 Southeast Region finishes during his stint. He was named the Peach Belt Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times (1991, 1992, and 1993). Massey has also enjoyed success as a coach on the high school level. In 15 years as a track coach, he has earned five Region Coach of the Year awards and is a two-time State Coach of the Year recipient. His teams have won seven region and two state championships. Massey is currently a teacher and coach at Union High School in Union, SC. Four of his Region Coach of the Year selections have come as the cross country coach at Union and has led his girls' and boys' squads to four combined Region Championships.

top 8k times in the history of the program, turning in a careerbest time of 26:05.49 at the 2001 Peach Belt Conference Championships. His 10k time of 33:49.16 also ranks among the all-time best in program history. He helped lead his teams to 11 team meet championships in his four years, while claiming four individual championships along the way. In addition to his efforts and leadership in the program, Cantrell was a strong student in the classroom. He was a three-time member of the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Academic Honor Roll. He received the athletic department’s highest honor when he was named the Student-Athlete of the Year in 2001, an award that combines excellence in athletics, academics and community service. Cantrell graduated from Upstate in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in History. He is currently working toward an associate’s degree in Radiographic Technology (medical imaging) at Spartanburg Community College. He earned the Dr. John S. Featherston Award for academic excellence last fall. In addition to his academic pursuits at SCC, he serves as an associate with FATZ Cafe. Cantrell has stayed active in athletics, using his running background in his recreational life today. He runs and rides bikes for fitness, competing in organized trail runs and bike races throughout the year. He is also an avid fisherman and makes occasional trips to Wilmington, N.C., to fish with former head coach and longtime friend Kevin Bowden. A native of nearby Boiling Springs, S.C., Cantrell was a standout runner at Boiling Springs High School. He was a two-time Spartanburg County champion in the 1600-meter race in track and was an all-area selection by the Spartanburg Herald-Journal.
Class of 2010
Kelly Cummings Bowden holds the distinction of being the first member of the women's cross country program to be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame. Bowden (1994-97) was a founding member of the women's program as the program began in 1994. She set a school-record time of 19:13.00 at the 1995 Peach Belt Championships. She owned the top spot for 12 years. Entering the 2009 season, the former Lady Rifle owned 10 of the top 50 times in school history. Bowden earned several awards during her time in Spartanburg. She was a three-time All-Peach Belt Conference member (1994, '95, '97). She was also named to the Peach Belt Presidential Honor Roll four times. In 1995, Bowden competed at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals. She turned in a performance of 19:47.59, which was her second fastest time and the 25th fastest in school-history entering the 2009 season. Bowden graduated from Upstate with a bachelor's degree in Spanish in 1999. She stayed in the Spartanburg area as a teacher and assistant cross country and track coach at Broome High School. She moved to Wilmington, N.C., and began teaching at Ashley High School. She is currently the Department Chair for Foreign Languages at the school. She has remained active in running, participating in various road races throughout the years since leaving Upstate. Bowden is originally from Buffalo, N.Y., and graduated from Sweet Home High School.
Brandon Canrtrell
Class of 2013 Brandon Cantrell is the fourth member of the men’s cross country program to be inducted into the Upstate Athletics Hall of Fame. Cantrell was one of several local runners who comprised the then-USC Spartanburg men’s cross country team from 1998-2001. The leader of the group, he was a mainstay at the top of the results in nearly every race he ran. When he finished his career in 2001, he cemented his place in program history by being the first runner, and one of only two currently, to earn all-conference honors all four years in the program. He also had the privilege of running alongside his twin brother, Bradley. Competing against nationally-ranked teams in the Peach Belt Conference, which featured older international runners, he helped lead the team to back-to-back third-place finishes in the Peach Belt Conference Championships his final two years in the program, finishing a career-best sixth as a senior in 2001. In all, he led the then-Rifles to four straight appearances in the NCAA Division II Regionals. The team finished fifth, three positions out of a trip to the NCAA Division II Nationals, in 2000 and fourth, two spots out of a trip to the NCAA Division II Nationals, in 2001. Cantrell owns one of the

Conference Championships 2011 Men’s A-Sun Champions
Nashville, Tenn. – The USC Upstate men's and women's cross country teams put on a great show in Music City this morning for the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Cross Country Championships as the men's team took home the team crown and the Spartans collected individual titles in both the men's and women's races courtesy of junior Gilbert Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya) and Jemeli Sang (Eldoret, Kenya). The event was hosted by Belmont at Percy Warner Park on the Vaughn's Gap Course. This marks the first Atlantic Sun team title for Upstate as the men's team posted a score of 69 to defeat two-time defending champion, Kennesaw State. Kemboi crossed the finish line first in a time of 24:27.01, the fourth-fastest time in A-Sun history, to win his second-straight individual title. The junior became the sixth A-Sun student-athlete to win back-to-back individual meet titles.
silver and bronze. The trifecta helped Upstate to a fourth-place team finish as Sang crossed the line in 17:20.90, Tangwar in 17:28.10 and Chelulei 17:48.70. This marks the third-straight year the Upstate women have finished fourth at the A-Sun meet, however this year the team recorded its best score in program history with 91 points. "Taking the top-three spots on the women's side was huge and I am very proud of the girls," said Blackwelder. "It was a strong showing for us and we're focused on the NCAA Regionals coming up in a few weeks." Sang, Tangwar and Chelulei were all-conference first team selections, while Sang was named A-Sun Runner of the Year. Lipscomb took top honors in the women's team standings, collecting 53 points. North Florida finished second, while Belmont came in third, tallying 69 and 81 total points, respectively.
"We're thrilled to bring home a team championship and I'm very proud of our guys," said associate head coach Carson Blackwelder. "We've finished third the last two years, so we knew we could do well, but we had a few guys that when it was time to step up, they did." The Spartan men had three individuals post top-10 finishes as junior Davey Dennison (Carlisle, Pa.) came in sixth with a time of 25:18.35 and classmate Christian Ritacco (Niceville, Fla.) crossed the line in 10th with a time of 25:41.64. Junior Cameron Thomas (Niceville, Fla.) snagged a clutch 17th-place finish for Upstate with a time of 25:57.73. Kemboi and Dennison earned first team all-conference marks, while Ritacco was a second team all-conference selection. Kemboi was named the A-Sun men's Runner of the Year, while Blackwelder was chosen as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. The Spartan men claimed the championship crown with a total of 69 points, edging Kennesaw State (79 points) by 10 points. Championship host Belmont came in third-place with 84 points. On the women's side, the Spartans finished 1-2-3 as the senior Kenyan trio of Sang, Joan Tangwar (Eldoret, Kenya) and Carolyne Chelulei (Eldoret, Kenya) took home the gold,

Conference Championships 2012 Men’s A-Sun Champions
Fort Myers, Fla. – The USC Upstate men's cross country team defended its Atlantic Sun Conference Championship crown Saturday as Gilbert Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya) won his third-straight individual title at the 2012 A-Sun Championships hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. The Spartans bring home their second-straight A-Sun team trophy, edging ETSU Saturday by just four points. With five runners in the top 20, Upstate beat the Buccaneers 49 points to 53 points, while Kennesaw State took third-place with 85 points. “Our guys followed the race plan pretty well,” said Upstate Associate Head Coach Carson Blackwelder. “Ross (Oden) and Christian (Ritacco) moved up really well in the last mile and half and put us in a position to win. It really came down to our fourth and fifth runners, just out-kicking people in the end. Our goal was to have four athletes make All-Conference and they achieved that.” With his third consecutive title, Kemboi became the third athlete in conference history to win three A-Sun individual cross country championships and the only one from the current member institutions as Michael Green (1998-200) from Troy and Andrew Letherby (1994, 1996-97) from Georgia State comprise the three-peat list. Kemboi grabbed first-place with a time of 24:16.70, well ahead of the second-place Nabil Hamid from KSU with a time of 24:43.80.
Blackwelder picked-up his second-straight A-Sun Coach of the Year honor. “It’s a great honor, but I don’t really do the running; the guys do the running,” Blackwelder said. “I give all the credit to them. Being Coach of the Year is really just a product of them winning.” Thomas kept Dennison in his sight during most of the race, but closed the gap towards the end as the two worked together to finish strong with Dennison earning eighth-place and Thomas in ninth. The senior duo finish with personal-best times as Dennison crossed the line in 25:05.40 and Thomas in 25:07.10. Oden came across the line shortly after, taking 12thplace with a personal-record time of 25:25.80. Upstate senior Christian Ritacco (Niceville, Fla.) sneaked into the top 20 for the Spartans, coming in 19th with a season-best mark of 25:55.70. Sophomore Mark Rennix (Beaufort, S.C.) was the sixth finisher for Upstate, taking 34th-place with a career-best time of 26:27.70. Junior Andrew Kipchumba (Eldoret, Kenya) followed in 39th with a time of 26:37.9. Junior Joey Daversa (Chesapeake, Va.) and senior Dylan Taylor (Woodruff, S.C.) finished things out for the Spartans, turning in times of 27:17.60 and 27:49.40.
“It’s one of those rare things I think,” Kemboi said. “It is a privilege to do this. It’s about consistency and just being determined and even in all aspects of life. We came all the way from Spartanburg, S.C. It was a long bus trip, but we came here on a mission. We did what we came to do and I’m proud of my teammates and I thank them for what they did in making this a success.” The Spartans landed four athletes on the All-Atlantic Sun First and Second Teams. Kemboi was named the 2012 A-Sun Runner of the Year and collected First Team All-Conference honors, while senior Davey Dennison (Carlisle, Pa.), senior Cameron Thomas (Niceville, Fla.) and junior Ross Oden (Salisbury, N.C.) were All-A-Sun Second Team selections.
