Editor’s Letter We’re almost there, women’s history month in March, but before then, we honor female icons in African American history (February), such as Rosa Parks. In an upcoming TV biopic, Meta Golding plays the role of the woman who sparked one of the most significant events in the civil rights movement (1954-1968). In preparation for the role, Golding says she thought she knew a lot about Parks. However, she learned just how pivotal Parks was as an organizer alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others. Other women like Dorothy Gibbons and Donna Hopkins may not be household names, but they are the inspiration behind hope for women who face breast cancer and other health challenges. Each one has used her experience to create a platform for which others can stand. You will surely enjoy learning more about each one. While we learn what we can do for others, we also focus on what not to do to ourselves, at least not too much. The trend among starlets like Courtney Cox may be to enhance their looks through plastic surgery, but a reverse course is on the rise. Some stars like Cox and singer K. Michelle are actually reversing their surgical procedures, opting for a more natural look. You can read more about what’s driving this natural-look revolution in our editorial titled “The Undoing of Plastic: Hollywood Starlets Who are Reversing Cosmetic Surgeries.”

Hollywood is also promoting the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements to expose the long-held attitudes and even people who have normalized women’s sexual harassment and assault. With so much focus on harassment, we examine the age-old overture of flirting, specifically at work. Is it harmless toying or potential harassment? On a lighter note, most everyone loves to getaway once in a while, but what prevents many of us from doing it regularly or at all, is our budget. Given that, we offer a means to overcome travel budget challenges with “How to Travel like a Millionaire on a Starter Budget.” While travelling may seem more like a dream for some, we know that everyone has actual dreams while sleeping. The issue is that we don’t always know what to make of our dreams. Enter Kim Forrester. She explains what your dreams may be telling you. Are you going to meet someone new or is your income going to increase? Read on so that you get away with Hers! Regards, Annette R. Johnson

reams, what do they really mean? Some people say that dreams are conscious acts performed throughout the day that transfer over to our nightly brain. Others argue that dreams reveal underlying messages that helps in interpreting our future. Despite these various claims, has anyone ever come up with a definite and proven scientific answer for the story behind our dreams? Well, according to award-winning author, educator and intuitive consultant, Kim Forrester, she has the answers. Kim Forrester, author of the book, “Infinite Mind,” uses psi experiences and modern-day research to explain this psychic phenomenon. I had the chance to speak with Kim to learn all about her book and also, how to interpret what my dreams were really telling me.

or many female celebrities, there’s an invisible clause in every contract they sign which says they are never allowed to look older than 35 years old. And for those ladies still under the age of 35, it is highly recommended that they enhance their physique with plastic surgery, lest they be outshined by the 25-year olds. This backwards idea has been an unspoken rule in Hollywood for decades, and we’ve all seen the results. Actresses such as Rene Zellweger, Meg Ryan, and Jennifer Grey are almost unrecognizable from the lovable romantic comedy characters that once stole our hearts. And there are more fake noses, butts, and breasts walking around L.A. than there are vegans… and that’s saying something. However, amongst the sea of spray tans and lip injections, some Hollywood stars are breaking their silent contract not only by speaking out against cosmetic procedures and enhancements but having theirs removed. Three celebs that have had their implants/fillers removed recently are Courtney Cox, K. Michelle, and Heidi Montag. Towards the final season of “Friends,” it was obvious that Monica (played by Courtney Cox) started to have that “always surprised” face which is usually indicative of face lifts, fillers, injections, etc. By the time Cox had hers-magazine.com

META GOLDING

RE-ENACTS THE REAL-LIFE ROLE of ROSA PARKS BY ANNETTE JOHNSON

B

est known for her breakout role in the “Hunger Games” film franchise, Meta Golding stars as the civil rights icon Rosa Parks in the new biopic “Behind the Movement.” The TV movie retells how Parks’ refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus launched the history-making Montgomery Bus Boycott. While there had been other instances of African Americans refusing to obey segregation laws, the film reveals the untold story of how a group of everyday people decided this incident was the right time to take a stand for their civil rights and demand equal treatment. Prior to taking on the role, Golding was familiar with Parks’ incident on the bus and the subsequent boycott, but she admits she learned so much more about Parks’ involvement as an activist long before the incident. She said, “Of course I knew who Rosa Parks was and I knew what she did. I knew what she looked like, but I never knew…I never heard her voice. I just knew her as this brave woman who was a national 38

treasurer who went on to be an activist. I had no idea that by the time Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, she was already a seasoned activist.” Parks’ longtime commitment to social justice and bravery were especially notable given her gender, as well as her race, in such a socially volatile time in American history. “She was an activist in the ‘40s in Alabama when it was very, very dangerous to be part of the NAACP,” noted Golding. “She was the secretary, not secretary like keeping notes, but she was going out and documenting all the civil rights injustices that were happening and trying to get people legal help and voter registration. She was very, very active, and I did not know that.” As one of the main but few prominent female members of the civil rights movement lead by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Parks holds an emblematic place in American history. In preparing for the role, Golding said, “I went to a lot of church, and I tried to prepare myself spiritually because Ms. Parks was a profoundly faithful person. I gained a lot of her courage hers-magazine.com

he other day I was speaking to a friend who is also a transformational teacher and leads workshops. She was telling me about a new project she’s putting together. As she was excitedly rattling off her multi-tiered strategy, she started naming all of the ways I could and would play a part in her new undertaking. Being a lover of great ideas, new ventures, spiraling up in the energy of other people’s visions and of course, having my ego stroked by someone telling me how fabulous I am and what an “amazing addition” I would be, normally, I would have just followed along with her assumption that I would be a part of her new project. However, since I’m preparing to launch my Every Choice Matters program on May 1st, I am very much in the conversation about the impact of each and every

cem-

22-January 19 Strengths: Disciplined, ambitious, logical, reliable Weaknesses: cold, pessimistic, rigid Your infallible work ethic means that you’ve been prolific recently, and your analytical mind has made sure that you have the numbers to back you up. You’ve been kicking butt and taking names like Miranda Priestly. Unfortunately, some people find your Miranda Priestly social attitude off-putting, and that might mean that you’ve been getting passed over for raises and promotions that you deserve. It’s unfair, and even though you would rather wear your painful interview shoes to the gym than network, grit your teeth and state your career goals to someone senior (not necessarily within your company—a mentor, or someone at a different company with the position you want would work too). They can help you work out a game plan and will keep your name in their mouths when they see your desired position open up.

AQUARIUS

January 20-February 18 Strengths: Intellectual, independent, friendly, compassionate Weaknesses: Aloof, self-absorbed, temperamental Aquarius, you usually thrive in places where people exchange views and experiences, but the holidays have you drained. The holidays are full of diplomacy, which you’re good at, and small talk, which you’re not bad at but which feels tedious when you naturally crave deeper conversations and connections. You just need a “you” moment. For your birthday, give yourself some time to articulate, via a Pinterest board, journaling or talking to a friend about your goals for the coming year. Just remember to eventually exit la la land, and make a plan for how to attain these goals. Also, actually listen to your 60

friend when she talks about her life, too! PI S C E S

February 19-March 20

You’re a bit of worrywart, Pisces. It’s normal to think you’re going to get fired when your boss calls you into her office—it’s less normal to come out of the perfectly benign meeting, W-2 in hand, thinking, “Okay but how do I know she won’t fire me the next time she brings me in?” Calm your emotional brain down by focusing on concrete numbers for how you’ve helped the company’s goals. You’ve brought in X number of new clients which meant Y growth in revenue last quarter, etc. Bonus—you might be able to use these numbers to negotiate a well-deserved raise!

ARIES

March 21-April 19 Fiercely competitive like the charging ram of your sign, you roll your eyes at “participation” trophies and are a good team player. But when a new colleague enters your work, resist the temptation to see her as a rival—for raises, for meeting quotas, for that spot in the fridge that’s conveniently your-saladTupperware-sized. Your boss wouldn’t have brought her in if she didn’t have something good to contribute to the team, and rest assured if she doesn’t, she will be shown the door. So be patient, and get to know her—and come in to work earlier to score that fridge spot.

TAUR US

April 20-May 20 You have a good eye for detail and seek out quality rather than quantity. You have a high standard for your work, but this also unfortunately means that you’re prone to procrastination. You think slapping something together at the last minute is an easier blow on your ego—if it wasn’t your best, you’re safe, you haven’t “truly” failed. But you owe it to your poor stressed body to take the time to really plan your next project. Manage your time wisely, and drink something nonhers-magazine.com
