Annual migration of up to 10,000 kilometres
Each year between April and November, Australia’s eastern coastline is a scene of spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a summer of feeding on krill in Southern Antarctic waters, these charismatic animals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth
The majority of humpbacks in Australian waters migrate north from June to August, and back towards the Southern Ocean from September to November during their annual migration of up to 10 000 kilometres. The exact timing of the migration period can vary from year to year depending on water temperature, sea ice, predation risk, prey abundance and the location of their feeding ground

not the largest whale found in Australian waters
This species was once only valued dead — mainly for its oil and baleen, or ‘whalebone’
Beginning in Australia shortly after European colonisation, whaling and the export of whale products became Australia’s first primary industry Early Australian whalers once hunted from small boats, towing their catch back for processing at shore stations, which one was believed to be at Urangan on the shore at Dayman Park
The development of harpoon guns, explosive harpoons and steam-driven boats made commercial whaling so efficient that many whale species came very close to extinction When southern right whales and blue whales became scarce, Australian whalers began to target humpback whales, until the International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling in the Southern Hemisphere in 1963. It is estimated that the east coast population of humpbacks was sadly little over 100 individuals
Preferred area for Winter
Hervey Bay is a unique winter stopover ground for the migratory parade of Humpback whales. It is believed the calm, shallow, protected waters of the Bay is a preferred area for yearlings, sub-adult (sexually immature whales), followed by mature females in late August, and then we begin to see mothers with newborn calves in Sept-Oct. By midSeptember the mature males have found the Bay, and the waters come alive with their haunting songs. The arrival of the males, also means increased activity with males competing with one another for access to females.
This means more aerial activity such as breaching (leaping nearly out of the water), and many head, tail and flipper displays. Hervey Bay’s the only area in the world where humpbacks consistently approach vessels.
At a maximum length of 16 metres, the humpback is
The curious humpbacks of Hervey Bay provide some of the most unusual and prolonged encounters with humans. These ‘muggings' are very unusual outside of the Bay and have made whalewatches in the Bay legendary. Even if you have watched whales elsewhere, nothing compares to watching the curious humpback whales of Hervey Bay.

Hervey Bay’s favourite whale
Humpback whales are enormous creatures - about the size of a school bus. They are known for their haunting and melodic songs and for breaching the water with amazing acrobatic abilities. Humpbacks don't normally have a hump on their backs; the name comes from the large hump that forms when they arch their backs before making a deep dive into the ocean. Humpback whales are not the biggest whales - that's the blue whale. Humpbacks can grow to 60 feet (18 meters) long, and they can weigh a whopping 40 tons (about half the size of a blue whale). Their ippers can grow up to 16 feet (5 m) long, which is the largest appendage in the world. Their tails are also massive and grow up to 18 feet (5 5 m) wide Like most whales, females are larger than males Humpbacks often propel themselves above the water and then splash back down, this is called breaching Believed that they may do this to splash off parasites,
but they may just do it because it's fun. They also slap the water with their tails or ippers. These behaviours may be used to communicate with one another
The Bay does have other whales
Antarctic Minke Whale Bryde's Whales
is very narrow and pointed, with a single ridge on the head. The maximum length of Antarctic Minke Whales appears to be around 9.8 m. Not gregarious and tend to swim alone or in pairs, large feeding groups of up to 400 individuals may form. Minke whales are known to be curious. Antarctic Minke Whales probably do not migrate as far north as Dwarf Minke Whales but this species does undergo extensive migration between the summer Antarctic feeding grounds and winter sub-tropical to tropical breeding grounds. Mature Antarctic Minke Whales feed primarily on the Antarctic Krill. www.environment.gov.au
are the second smallest of the (baleen whales). The rostrum is V-shaped but has three parallel ridges between the blowhole and nostril tip. They can grow to 14.6 m (males) or 15.6 m (females). Bryde's Whales are not gregarious and mostly swim alone or in pairs. Bryde's Whale is considered to be a fairly opportunistic feeder, readily consuming whatever shoaling prey is available, such as pilchard, anchovy, sardine, mackerel, herring and other schooling fish. www.environment.gov.au
Pilot Whales Southern Right Whales
have a robust body with a thick tail stock.
The dorsal fin is wide, broad based, falcate and set well forward on the body. Occurring in tropical and warm-temperate waters world-wide.
The Long-finned Pilot Whale is widely recorded in colder waters off southern Australia.
The Short-Finned Pilot Whales reaches physical maturity at approximately 17 years and is more than 5 m in length, a maximum age of 46 years. While females are smaller at 4.8 m and reach 63 years. Feeding mainly on squid, cuttlefish, octopus and some fish. www.environment.gov.au
are large baleen whales with a less streamlined shape than Humpback Whales. They grow to a maximum length of 17.5 m and weight of 80 t, with mature females often slightly larger than males. The majority are uniformly black in colour, no dorsal fin. Thought to be solitary during migration, or accompanied by a dependent calf or occasionally a yearling offspring. Forming large groups in breeding areas. Krill is a major food source and require adequate supplies of food to accumulate energy reserves that is essential for migration and breeding. Depletion of krill through over harvesting may be a potential threat to their population. www.environment.gov.au

Step back into Hervey Bay’s past
Everyone can get on board the Rattler!
The Mary Valley Rattler is a heritage rail journey through the stunning Mary Valley. Steam train journeys depart the historic Gympie Station Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. An all access carriage was recently introduced which provides special facilities for wheelchair and other assistedaccess passengers. The railway carriage dates back to 1924 and required extensive renovation and upgrading to make it railworthy for the Mary Valley Rattler steam train. Expert Gympie crafts-people brought the carriage back to life with its most comprehensive restoration since its original construction in the Ipswich workshops 96 years ago. While built originally to house up to 90 passengers on cross bench seats in nine compartments, the new configuration is a far more spacious 56 seats, with four dedicated and fully-equipped wheelchairs spaces. The restoration was undertaken in the Old Gympie Workshops by a local carpenter, with the assistance from a wide range of
volunteers.
Extending the commitment further was the launch of 'Pets On Board' service, allowing passengers to share the experience with their favourite four-legged friend. A carriage has been configured with two segregated booths that can accommodate up to six people per booth with up to two pets per booth from the same family. Pets can travel on board the Rattler on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday services subject to availability and terms and conditions apply
Thursday's the popular railmotor RM76 takes guests on a foodie excursion showcasing the wonderful produce and product of the region.
The Mary Valley Rattler operates a range of services across the week from Gympie Station to Amamoor in the Mary Valley. The three hour journeys capture the beauty and history of the rich agricultural – and former gold mining – region from the comfort of beautifully restored heritage carriages.

Prickly undergrowth
Welcoming entrance gardens beside Boat Harbour Drive, immaculate mowed parks and play grounds, are a credit to all involved, but special effort should be made to provide suitable habitat where our beautiful little birds such as Fairywrens, Finches and Scrubwrens etc, could be enjoyed also. They all require prickly, tangled undergrowth, (such as Lantana), for protection from introduced cats, foxes and their other natural predators. Also well suitable grasses for seed for at least three species of Finch. So property owners & council employees, before you slash, mow or spray any area that is not required as a lawn or garden, just visualise how interesting it could be to have a patch, that may look just a little untidy to some people, but will be suitable for little birds to hide, nest and feed in. You can place a sign displaying "left for Wildlife" to show it is a planned section – not just an untidy area. Maybe a bird-bath nearby where you can expect to see little birds safely drink and bathe. Wonderful relaxation without a lot of maintenance! Hervey Bay is a noted bird-watch area and visitors come from around the world and interstate just to see them. You will feel good to know you have done your bit. Birdwatchers meet regularly.

Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20km north of Maryborough.
William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

Fraser Island is K’gari
• Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise
• Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef
• Fraser Island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide
• Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presumed it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula.
• Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape
• Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island
• A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser.
• 1863 The first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu.
• Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers
• Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914
• Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935
• A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes, some as much as 70 metres above sea level.
Travel through with respect and care
Traditional owners the Butchulla people, have a long and ongoing relationship with K’gari (Fraser Island). In order to acknowledge the important connection to country of the Butchulla people, the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing’s (NPRSR) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) urges visitors to treat the country they are travelling through with respect and care.
Logging and mining a thing of the past
Logging commenced in 1860 of predominantly Satinay, Kauri Pine, Brush Box, Cypress, Blackbutt and Tallowood. With the timber industry came bullocks, horses, sawmills, homes, a school and a jetty. Logging ceased in late 1991. Small-scale mining for heavy minerals, mainly rutile and zircon, began with mining leases granted in 1949 and sand mining ending 1976.
Ferry services run daily from River Heads (20min south of Hervey Bay) to the sunset side of the World Heritage-listed K’gari. The adventure starts here!

Towing safety tips
First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working.
* Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job?
* Trailer or tow bar weights - check your cars handbook for the maximum weights allowed
* Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the cars mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars
* Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your cars handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too
* Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard.
* Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights
* Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturers recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it
* Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc ) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly
* Suspension - towing puts extra strain on a cars suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing
* Reversing - there are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem to be a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears

It has been stated that Australia is the only country that allows for negative gearing deductions, although this is not the case according to HIA Senior Economist. There are plenty of other countries that allow negative gearing deductions. Here is how it works around the globe. An asset is negatively geared when interest payments on borrowings used to nance the asset exceed the income it generates. "Negative gearing" means that these losses can then be used to offset other forms of income such as wages. Although it is most commonly used in the property market, negative gearing can apply to any form of asset. Australia is not the only country to allow negative gearing. Germany, Japan, Canada and Norway all have very similar systems to ours, with rental losses able to offset total income tax payable and unused losses able to be carried forward to offset future tax liabilities. Other countries have similar systems, albeit slightly less generous, where rental losses can generally be used to offset future rental income but not other forms of income (e.g. wages income). Some countries do not allow negative gearing but nevertheless have some allowance for rental expenses to reduce overall tax liability. Negative gearing needs to be considered in the context of the broader tax system, especially personal income tax and capital gains tax. It is not accurate to focus on only one aspect of our tax system without considering the whole system. For example, relative to other OECD economies, Australia has a high marginal tax rate which kicks in at a low-income threshold. When considering the tax system in aggregate, Australia is one of the most heavily taxed countries in the OECD
