Everyone can get on board the Rattler! The Mary Valley Rattler is a heritage rail journey through the stunning Mary Valley. Steam train journeys depart the historic Gympie Station Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. An all access carriage was recently introduced which provides special facilities for wheelchair and other assistedaccess passengers. The railway carriage dates back to 1924 and required extensive renovation and upgrading to make it railworthy for the Mary Valley Rattler steam train. Expert Gympie crafts-people brought the carriage back to life with its most comprehensive restoration since its original construction in the Ipswich workshops 96 years ago. While built originally to house up to 90 passengers on cross bench seats in nine compartments, the new configuration is a far more spacious 56 seats, with four dedicated and fully-equipped wheelchairs spaces. The restoration was undertaken in the Old Gympie Workshops by a local carpenter, with the assistance from a wide range of
volunteers. Extending the commitment further was the launch of 'Pets On Board' service, allowing passengers to share the experience with their favourite four-legged friend. A carriage has been configured with two segregated booths that can accommodate up to six people per booth with up to two pets per booth from the same family. Pets can travel on board the Rattler on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday services subject to availability and terms and conditions apply. Thursday's the popular railmotor RM76 takes guests on a foodie excursion showcasing the wonderful produce and product of the region. The Mary Valley Rattler operates a range of services across the week from Gympie Station to Amamoor in the Mary Valley. The three hour journeys capture the beauty and history of the rich agricultural – and former gold mining – region from the comfort of beautifully restored heritage carriages.

Before you clear prickly undergrowth is required
Welcoming entrance gardens Variegated Fairy-wren beside Boat Harbour Drive, immaculate mowed parks and play grounds, are a credit to all involved, but special effort should be made to provide suitable habitat where our beautiful little birds such as Fairywrens, Finches and Scrubwrens etc, could be enjoyed also. They all require prickly, tangled undergrowth, (such as Lantana), for protection from introduced cats, foxes and their other natural predators. Also well suitable grasses for seed for at least three species of Finch. So property owners & council employees, before you slash, mow or spray any area that is not required as a lawn or garden, just visualise how interesting it could be to have a patch, that may look just a little untidy to some people, but will be suitable for little birds to hide, nest and feed in. You can place a sign displaying "left for Wildlife" to show it is a planned section – not just an untidy area. Maybe a bird-bath nearby where you can expect to see little birds safely drink and bathe. Wonderful relaxation without a lot of maintenance! Hervey Bay is a noted bird-watch area and visitors come from around the world and interstate just to see them. You will feel good to know you have done your bit. Birdwatchers meet regularly. Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

Unique & historical architecture
Meals Available 11:30am - 8pm 7 Days
Maryborough is just an easy 20 minute drive from Hervey Bay and is commonly referred to as the Heritage City. Its streets are lined with beautifully restored Queenslanders and civic buildings and it’s well worth a visit for the historically minded, or the camera buff with plenty of unique and historical architecture to photograph. Stroll through the historical Wharf Street precinct, offering a glimpse into life in a busy immigration port. Some of the historical attractions include: The Military and Colonial Museum, the old Post Office Hotel and Criterion Hotel, Customs House Interpretive Centre, Bond Store Museum and Maryborough, named after the wife of Customs Governor Fitzroy, was settled 1847. It was a major immigration port into Australia Residence Cellar and is one of Queensland’s oldest cities. Door.
The early times in Maryborough Evidence of human inhabitation of the Maryborough region stretches back to at least 6,000 years ago. The Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) & Batjala (Butchulla) people were the original inhabitants of the region. Gubbi were described as an inland tribe of the Wide Bay–Burnett area. The Batjala occupied the more coastal regions including K’gari (Fraser Island). In 1842, Andrew Petrie & Henry Stuart Russell sailed up the river known to the Gubbi as the Monoboola (now the Mary River) looking for land and timber to exploit. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders & Oxley had charted the coastline, but the arrival of Edgar T. Aldridge & his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool &other primary produce, and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. Early Maryborough economy was centred around livestock farming, logging of the bunya pine forests, and the boiling down of animal carcasses to make tallow. In the late 1850's the soil along the Mary River was deemed ideal for the cultivation of sugarcane and in 1859 E. T. Aldridge was able to grow & produce a world-class experimental crop. From the 1840's to well after 1900, Maryborough & Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people - Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) & others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night.

Trees that line the main street or Bruce Hwy are Brazilian Leopard Trees. As a National Trust Town, it provides opportunities for visitors to explore the regions interesting past. I k’gari/fraser island
Fraser Island is K’gari Logging to World Heritage Area • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise. • Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef. • Fraser Island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide. • Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presumed it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula. • Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape. • Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island. • A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser. • 1863 The first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu. • Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers. • Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914. • Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935. • A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes, some as much as 70 metres above sea level.

Cut timber on the old McKenzie Jetty Fraser Island.
Fraser Island was used by Europeans as a major disembarkation point for new settlers heading to Maryborough and Gympie regions. Logging commenced in 1860 of predominantly Satinay, Kauri Pine, Brush Box, Cypress, Blackbutt and Tallowood. After the Gympie gold rush of 1867 demand for timber boomed and logging expanded to become the region's major industry for more than a century. With the timber industry came bullocks, horses, sawmills, homes, a school and a jetty to the island. Logging stopped in late 1991. National parks were declared in the northern part of K'gari in 1971 with more additions in later years. 1992 saw the significant listing of K'gari (Fraser Island) as a World Heritage Area.
Ferry services run daily from River Heads (20min south of Hervey Bay) to the sunset side of the World Heritage-listed K’gari. The adventure starts here!

Towing safety tips We know these parts.
First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working. * Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job? * Trailer or tow bar weights - check your cars handbook for the maximum weights allowed. * Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the cars mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars. * Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your cars handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too. * Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard. * Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights. * Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturers recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move. Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it. * Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc.) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly. * Suspension - towing puts extra strain on a cars suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing. * Reversing - there are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem to be a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner. When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears.

You must give way to vehicles on your right at an uncontrolled crossroad—this is a crossroad without any trafc lights, lines or signs. In this example, White vehicle A must give way to Yellow vehicle B
If you're driving on a road that ends at a T-intersection, you must give way to all vehicles—except those doing a U-turn—travelling on the road continuing through the Intersection. In this example, White vehicle A must give way to Yellow vehicle B.

When turning right at an uncontrolled crossroad (without a slip lane), you must give way to vehicles coming from the opposite direction that are: driving straight ahead through the intersection turning left at the intersection. In both examples, Yellow vehicle B must give way to White vehicle A.
A stop sign is not more powerful than a give way sign when giving way. When 2 drivers arrive at stop or give ways signs at the same time, the stop sign becomes the equivalent of a give way sign. Both vehicles must give way to other vehicles before they must give way to each other. If 2 vehicles are opposite each other at an intersection. White vehicle A has a give way sign. Yellow vehicle B has a stop sign. White vehicle A must give way to Yellow vehicle B because it is turning right across the path of Yellow B.

Bitumen resealing Toni Souvlis Coordinator Programming and Communication said the Council is pleased to advise that as part of its 2023/24 Budget, funding has been allocated to undertake the bitumen resealing of a number of streets in Urangan, Booral, Urraween, Craignish, Takura, Torbanlea, Howard, Pacic Haven, Maryborough, Tinana, Granville, Oakhurst, Dunmora, Yerra, Gootchie, Glenwood and Poona. (A full list of the locations is available on council website). A bitumen reseal involves spraying a thin layer of bitumen over an existing old road surface. The bitumen seal protects the underlying road pavement materials from weather damage. A stone aggregate is then spread on top and rolled in to provide the necessary skid resistant surface texture. Bitumen seals are used to seal newly constructed work (gravel) and extend the life of an existing road by 8-14 years depending on trafc loading. The tender for these works has been invited and at this point in time, the estimated delivery period for these works is November 2023/January 2024, subject to Contractor availability and weather. Any inconvenience which may be caused as a result of the works is regretted and every effort will be made to minimise this aspect for you. Once the project has started, the on-site supervisor will contact directly adjoining properties to provide updates relating to the proposed works. Your assistance in instructing children to stay clear of earthmoving plant would also be appreciated.
