Story of the Fraser’s To access the Island
The Sterling Castle struck a coral reef north of Fraser Island in 1836. Many survivors escaped onto the island, including Captain James Fraser and wife, Eliza.
Captain Fraser never made it off the island. Controversy surrounds his death. The captain’s wife, accused the Aboriginal people of murdering him. While other surviving crew members stated that the captain died from natural causes. To this day, his death is still a source of myth and legend.
Eliza Fraser, a Scottish woman, managed to integrate into the indigenous society and survived for many weeks among them, until she was eventually rescued near Lake Cootharaba on Noosa North Shore. Eliza chose to publish her accounts of the shipwreck upon returning to England, in which she describes her experience as "a fate worse than death", and paints the Butchulla people as primitive, barbaric, murderous and cannibalistic. Despite having little chance of surviving without them, her adverse depictions lead to reprisals and relocation of the local inhabitants which declined to 300 people in 1890. Initially, Eliza enjoyed much sympathy. This began to wane, however, when her accounts of the ordeal became more and more random, and increasingly embellished. She became a minor media celebrity, and her story grew even wilder. Controversy followed when she approached the Mayor of London to request a charity be set up for her and her 3 children (not mentioning the fact she had secretly married another sea Captain in Sydney within 6 months of being rescued, before heading back to England on his boat). 1976 Australian bawdy adventure drama film, ‘Eliza Fraser’, starring Susannah York, Trevor Howard, Noel Ferrier and John Castle. It was the first Australian film with a big-budget, costing $1.2m to make. Described as a classic Aussie tale of colonial hardship and bawdy beginnings. In 1947, Sidney Nolan created a series of paintings, “Nolan’s Eliza Fraser". They gained prominence after one of the works was reproduced on the cover of the important Australian novel ‘A Fringe of Leaves’, written by Patrick White, whose imaginative re-counting of Mrs Fraser’s story was inspired by Nolan’s paintings.
Fraser Island was named after a British ship captain James Fraser and his wife Eliza, who were stranded on the island. K'gari formally adopted the traditional Butchulla name, K'gari. (Paradise). Pronounced "gurri". The World Heritage Committee formally rename the heritage-listed island on 19 Sept 2021.The name is derived from its Dreamtime creation story
Travel with respect & care
Traditional owners the Butchulla people, have a long and ongoing relationship with K’gari (Fraser Island). In order to acknowledge the important connection to country of the Butchulla people, the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing’s (NPRSR) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) urges visitors to treat the country they are travelling through with respect and care. Butchulla people want their messages of care and respect for the land to reach all people visiting the island. As visitors explore K'gari (Fraser Island), they will see signs carrying a ‘welcome to country’ message from the Butchulla
When coming from the south through Maryborough, turn at the roundabout on Hervey Bay - Maryborough road onto Booral road & follow the signs to River Heads. When coming from the north, leave Howard along the Howard - Torbanlea road to the roundabout, then turn onto Booral road & follow signs to River Heads. High clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are required as the island consists entirely of sand All-wheel-drive vehicles and caravans are not recommended Vehicle access is by barge (ferry) only. Fraser Commando School
The Fraser Commando School (FCS), K’gari (Fraser Island), functioned as an important part of Australia’s Special Operations programme during World War II. Between October 1943 and August 1945. Skills taught, among others, included unarmed combat and physical training; jungle craft, folboats (canoes), demolitions and weapons training. The site is located on the west side of K’gari about 1.6km south of Kingsher Bay Resort and Village. There is an old boiler on the beach near the FCS site (1994), which is spread between the remnants of McKenzie’s jetty and Beerilbee Creek in the south, to a hill just north of an area cleared for leading lights in the 1880s. Most of the main camp site is located north of Beerilbee Creek. FCS opened as the main Services Reconnaissance Department school for basic training in October 1943. All building materials and stores were transported by army barges, from a the Urangan pier. Originally the school was to train operatives for Operation Falcon, a plan formulated in August 1943 to carry out simultaneous attacks on 13 Japanese bases from Timor to New Ireland. Falcon was gradually reduced due to a lack of transport and only one unsuccessful operation (Hawk—involving an air drop of men and supplies into the water) occurred in March 1944. One of the two transport aircraft had to turn back, while the other was lost with 6 SRD personnel. Although Falcon was a failure, the SRD personnel trained on K’gari were used on other SRD operations in the South West Pacic Area. The most well known of the SRD’s operations (although not using K’gari alumni) was Operation Jaywick, which struck at Japanese shipping in Singapore harbour in late September 1943, on the renamed vessel, the Krait, set out from Western Australia in early September. In all, a total of 25–30 instructors trained a total of 909 students, including 250 ofcers by the time training ceased at FCS in August 1945. www.ww2places.qld.gov.au.

Celebrating 30 Years!
What a marvellous milestone!
Family owned and operated tourism business 1770 LARC! Tours is turning 30 in May this year!
The business was the brainchild of Des and Betty Mergard and their youngest son Neil, with their first brilliant pink LARC vessel being purchased from Rockhampton in 1994.
A LARC is an amphibian, with the perfect capabilities for exploring national parks, tidal creeks, headlands and bays. When Des, Betty and Neil began operating tours, the road to the Town of 1770 was still predominantly dirt and very few other business ventures existed.
They offered amphibious tours in Bustard Bay and traversed the coastline northwards, as far as Bustard Head Lightstation. Significant restoration work over many years has transformed the lightstation to become a coveted historical destination showcasing maritime artefacts and memorabilia.
Each seven hour LARC Paradise Tour allows a new group of guests to explore, reminisce, learn and indulge in an amazing era where light-keepers and their families manually protected the shores of Australia. The commitment of operating a lighthouse tower is intriguing and certainly incredible.
Fast forward to 2024 and there is a great range of tourism products and experiences for all ages in the Discovery Coast area. From 1 hour to 7 hour tours, the guided cruises on the LARC ‘moving grandstand’ offer an all year round, allweather adventure. Book now and visit the Town of 1770 for a LARCing good time!

More then Easter eggs
The Easter festival, the oldest and most important festival in the Christian calendar, culminates in the celebration that is Easter Sunday, which today is a time when most of us get together with our families, share a meal and - of course - eat lots of chocolate! Most people know that it was on this day that Jesus was said to come to life after being crucified, visiting his friends and followers once more. At Easter time Christians remember the last week of Jesus' life, or ‘Holy Week'. It signals the end of Lent, the traditional time of fasting in the Christian calendar. Easter is the day when we celebrate Jesus Christ rising from the dead. Jesus is the Son of God and heroically gave His life to die for our sins.
On the third day after He died -- the day we now celebrate as Easter Sunday -- His friends went to His grave, and found that He had risen from the dead. They saw an angel who told them, “Don't be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He has been raised from the dead, just as He said it would happen." Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday; now He offers to you the gift of eternal life and forgiveness of sins.
This is the true story of Easter, and how it can change your life. Christians today often commemorate Good Friday by attending a service, where Jesus' last hours on earth are retraced. As Good Friday is seen as a day of mourning, services are very solemn; churches are left unadorned with flowers or similar decorations, and in some churches pictures and statues are covered over

Before you clear
prickly undergrowth is required
Welcoming entrance gardens beside Boat Harbour Drive, immaculate mowed parks and play grounds, are a credit to all involved, but special effort should be made to provide suitable habitat where our beautiful little birds such as Fairywrens, Finches and Scrubwrens etc, could be enjoyed also. They all require prickly, tangled undergrowth, (such as Lantana), for protection from introduced cats, foxes and their other natural predators. Also well suitable grasses for seed for at least three species of Finch. So property owners & council employees, before you slash, mow or spray any area that is not required as a lawn or garden, just visualise how interesting it could be to have a patch, that may look just a little untidy to some people, but will be suitable for little birds to hide, nest and feed in. You can place a sign displaying "left for Wildlife" to show it is a planned section – not just an untidy area. Maybe a bird-bath nearby where you can expect to see little birds safely drink and bathe. Wonderful relaxation without a lot of maintenance! Hervey Bay is a noted bird-watch area and visitors come from around the world and interstate just to see them. You will feel good to know you have done your bit. Birdwatchers meet regularly. Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

Once a busy immigration port
Queens Park
Maryborough is just an easy 20 minute drive from Hervey Bay and is commonly referred to as the Heritage City. Its streets are lined with beautifully restored Queenslanders and civic buildings and it’s well worth a visit for the historically minded, or the camera buff with plenty of unique and historical architecture to photograph. Stroll through the historical Wharf Street precinct, offering a glimpse into life in a busy immigration port. Some of the historical attractions include: The Military and Colonial Museum, the old Post Office Hotel and Criterion Hotel, Customs House Interpretive Centre, Bond Store Museum and Customs Residence Cellar Door.
Ghosts from the past
Queens Park
The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf st Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night. From the 1840s to well after 1900, Maryborough and Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants More than 30,000 people - Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) and others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region

First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job!
If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working.
* Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job?
* Trailer or tow bar weights - check your cars handbook for the maximum weights allowed
* Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the cars mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars
* Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your cars handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too

Population growth drives demand
As property prices soar across Queensland, one coastal region is experiencing the largest growth in Australia. Property prices in the Wide Bay region which includes Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, and Maryborough have jumped between 65-75 per cent in the past ve years, according to the latest CoreLogic report. Property analyst Simon Pressley said the Wide Bay had an "incredibly exciting set of ingredients. The cost of housing combined with lifestyle is denitely a major drawcard for someone looking to relocate from a big, congested city such as Sydney and Melbourne", he said. The CoreLogic report showed Bundaberg had the greatest growth in all of Australia with property values soaring almost 75 per cent over the past ve years to a median value of almost $480,000. Hervey Bay had experienced an increase of more than 67 per cent to more than $615,000, and Maryborough had seen an almost 66 per cent jump to almost $395,000. The Sunshine Coast took top spot out of regional Queensland for the highest median value at more than $965,000, overtaking the Gold Coast region which is sitting at more than $928,000. The head of research at CoreLogic, Tim Lawless, said "Queensland's strong population growth was helping to fuel the high prices. Generally, when we see housing values rising, it's a simple mismatch between supply and demand", he said. "Most of that is being driven by a combination of interstate migration, so more people coming into Queensland from NSW and Victoria in particular. But the ip side, of course, is that affordability for those that don't own a home is becoming more and more challenging,” he said.
