Feast of Tabernacles Celebration at Christian Retreat By Joanne Curphey

It’s become a tradition at Christian Retreat. The annual celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles has drawn people to the Retreat, on the shores of the Manatee River, for the past 31 years. This year, Oct. 1320, the event features Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, best-selling author of “The Harbinger,” and acclaimed recording artist Paul Wilbur, along with many other speakers, singers, dancers and workshop leaders. Christians and Messianic Jews from many different congregations are expected to attend. The biblical Feast of Tabernacles, or “Succot,”
is traditionally a season of joy and giving thanks referred to in Leviticus 23: 39,40, “On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the fruit of the land, you shall keep the Feast of the Lord...and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days.” Pastor Phil Derstine explains, “For the Jews it historically commemorates God’s provision when the Israelites spent 40 years in the wilderness, living in makeshift shelters, or booths, known as ‘sukkot.’ In Israel, Jews today still build these booths, roofed with palm branches, outside their homes to remind them of the wilderness life of their ancestors.” At Christian Retreat, the 8-day celebration presents an opportunity to explore our Jewish roots, remembering that Jesus, or Yeshua, was a Jew who observed all the Jewish holidays. It is a joyous time, characterized by jubilant worship, colorful processionals, Israeli folk dancing, and insightful teaching about the meaning of the Feast and its prophetic significance to all believers. Tuesday evening features an international “Food Fest,” beginning at 6 PM. “Israel remains at the center of international attention,” says Pastor Phil, “and there’s a reason for that...Israel and the Bible are at the center of the Christian faith.” Full daily schedule can be seen at christianretreat.org. My sister told me she can feel the presence of demonic forces around her at times and see them around people. She is a born-again Christian and tries to convert me to believe the stuff she says is real. What should I tell her to help her face reality? Mystified --Dear Mystified: When someone is a born-again believer, they actually become new creatures in Christ. You are not dealing with your sister in the same way you used to know her. A Christian enters into a new life, a new realm, and gains a new family – a family of Believers. Yes, as a Believer, I too can discern the presence of Good and Evil. Because the Holy Spirit of God lives inside of me,

he shows me all things. He convicts of sin, and right and wrong things. He directs my path! As Christians, we are in a spiritual battle against principalities, powers, and rulers of darkness of this present world; against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12. Read Ephesians 6:10-12 for your understanding. It is not a battle of flesh and blood, but of the spirit. Even believers can become so earthly minded (carnally minded) that they never even realize where the enemy’s attacks are coming from. The fight natural causes and conditions and waste a lot of time! Instead, we need to fight in the Supernatural! Read Daniel 10:12-20. Here we see that Daniel was waiting for an answer from the Lord, but it
did not come right away, because Satan and his demons tried to stop Gabriel from coming to Daniel as a messenger from God. Finally, Michael, anoth er warring angel, came to help Gabriel fight the devil in the heavenlies. This caused the delay. There are three different areas called heaven in the God’s Word: The heaven where God resides. The stellar (‘star’) heavens, what we call outer space. The heavens around this earth, the heavenlies, (the atmosphere – air) surrounding this planet. The last heaven is where spiritual warfare takes place. Ephesians 2:2 calls Satan the ‘prince of the power of the air’. The air is where wicked spirits operate. From there they attempt to rule
the nations of the earth to which they have been assigned by the devil. And rule they will, unless the prayers of God’s people keep them from it. We are an army marching in this land. By banding together, we can prevent the wickedness in high places from ruling our nation. Will you take your place in the ranks of the faithful and intercede for our country? Our President? Our world? Dear Reader, God does not want you to remain mystified, but to come to Him and be saved. Just say, “Lord Jesus, come into my heart. I want to join up with the great army of Believers. I want my life to have purpose.” When you do this, you will come into the knowledge of understanding of who God is, who you are, and what God has for you. Fight, pray, believe! This is God’s Truth! Several years ago, Nick and I were asked to host a weekend marriage renewal retreat. This was a congregation that recently lost their pastor. He and his wife set this weekend up several months before his illness and we were honored that their leadership asked us. Besides some fun activities, Nick prepared messages on the biblical marriage covenant and the importance of the marriage vow. I presented talks about the challenges of blending two unique people into one team for the work of God’s Kingdom on earth. One reason is to raise children to be trained to carry on the example of Christian life with their unique personalities and temperaments. Another is to be role models of what a blessed marriage looks like. We both stressed that a blessed and happy marriage isn’t an easy process, and sometimes still isn’t. Yet if we place the Lord at the head of our marriage, the rewards are great and eternal! We shared with the couples some of our early marital challenges. After the wedding vows of two becoming one we sure had to work hard to make it happen. We began with already having four children, my mother and a dog named Shana to add to the challenges of becoming one fam ily. Like us, we asked, were you or are you still struggling with blending dif-
ferent traditions, family values, ideas and choices? Choices like how to juggle busy days while working full time jobs, who should handle the finances, good parenting, relating to the other spouse’s families, plus dealing with personal lifestyles before you were married? For example, one of our first challenges was who would be cooking the dinner. Nick did NOT like my midwestern style of cooking especially casseroles because he was and still is an excellent cook, with his specialty being Italian cuisine. After a quick family meeting, we all agreed the little boys would help set the table, the two older girls with grandma’s help would cook Monday through Thursday, Nick cooked on weekends and I cooked on Friday night. My Friday’s meal was “all you can eat” pizza at our favorite pizza buffet! I thought that was more than fair. Nick laughed, and the others loved it! That was an easy and fun adjustment to this newly blended family, but as time went on, we also realized how different our temperaments were and how Nick and I brought very deep baggage into our marriage including past hurts that went as far back as childhood. We made inner vows not to trust too much, or tried too hard to please the others, had the fear of failing, and not being go-

od enough, etc. Plus, the children were affected by past hurts and my mom had her own issues of grief, insecurity, loneliness. The quote “Hurt people, hurt people” summed our first years as a family. The one who adjusted the best was the dog Shana. She took to me and we became buddies. Then God took over. I won’t go into all that we shared at the conference, but simply that though Nick and I had “religious” training before we met, we did not have a reborn relationship with God and our Lord and Savior Jesus. But He knew us even before we were in our mother’s wombs. When we chose to follow Him, He began guiding us on our planned journeys of first emotional healing so we can then learn what it means to become the blessed and loving marriage that we have today. Two people one marriage vow, two become one. The children are all adults now. We pray for them daily as they are still searching like we did. Though they are on their own journeys, they see us still in the peace and happiness we have as a couple, and with the foundation of the knowledge of God’s love they too will experience their eternal promises. Our mission started together in Occidental, Mindoro to the Mangyan tribe. We worked together in various Bible studies including one in their office. A few days before Brother Benjie was transferred to another destination in Mindanao, he had a horrible motorcycle accident that left him almost lifeless. His injuries included broken bones in his spinal cord, broken bones on his legs, internal bleeding in his lungs, intestines, and stomach. His esophagus was also bleeding and his throat had to have hole for the tracheotomy. I found him in the intensive care unit where doctors told me, “any minute he may die.” I asked permission to go inside ICU so we could pray. They permitted us to and we started de-
claring life over him while rebuking death. We spoke restoration over every part of his body! We declared by the stripes of Jesus his miraculous healing to come forth. (1 peter 2.24) Two days, two weeks, two months, and now over one year, Jesus has healed him and provided all the metals that he needed to complete each surgery and mend his broken bones. Today, Brother Benjie Rubio has an electric bike, and alongside all his therapy, he is now selling slippers (flip flops), candles, biscuits, and more. GOD

GIRLS IN PERIL: Tens of thousands of girls at risk of being sold into prostitution or slave labor have been saved from a possible “fate worse than death” by Texas-based mission agency Gospel for Asia (GFA, www.gfa.org), working in Asia’s poverty-stricken slums and villages. International Day of the Girl Child is October 11.
WILLS POINT, Texas, Oct. 1, 2019 /Christian Newswire/ -- Tens of thousands of girls in Asia at risk of being sold into prostitution or slave labor have been saved from a possible “fate worse than death” by Gospel for Asia, a Texas-based mission organization, and its field partners working in Asia’s poverty-stricken slums and villages. To mark International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, Gospel for Asia (GFA, www.gfa.org) revealed tens of thousands of girls are enrolled in 600-plus GFA-supported Bridge of Hope centers across Asia - providing safety, free schooling, medical care and meals for at-risk children living in extreme poverty. The 2019 Day of the Girl Child draws attention to critical issues facing millions of girls around the world, including education inequality, gender-based violence, and forced child marriage. “Some of these girls living in the impoverished communities served by
Bridge of Hope are among the most vulnerable in the world, with many of them unwanted and treated by their own families as nothing more than free labor or goods to be sold,” said GFA founder Dr. K.P. Yohannan. “It’s a crisis of neglect and abuse.” Severe poverty results in parents taking extreme steps just to survive, including forcing their young daughters into slavery-like labor conditions or - worse - prostitution. Girls “Never Seen Again” “Prostitution is legal in some parts of Asia so the chances of girls being victimized are drastically increased,” said Yohannan. “Many of the poorest families are manipulated into selling their daughters to opportunists who promise a better life for them. But many of these girls are never heard from or seen again. It’s a fate worse than death.” In this century, more young women and girls are enslaved in brothels each year than were
shipped to slave plantations at the height of the slave trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, according to reports. “Despite the good work the governments in these nations are doing to combat these issues, so much work still needs to be done,” Yohannan said. In South Asia, Lakshmi’s 10-year-old sister worked in bonded labor - security for repayment of a debt - seven days a week, starting at 7 a.m. and finishing at 9 p.m. “(Her employer) treated her very badly,” Lakshmi said. “He hit her if he thought she was working slowly; if she talked to the other children, he yelled at her. He came looking for her if she was sick and couldn’t go to work. All I wanted was to bring my sister home.” Girls Deliberately Starved Meanwhile, many impoverished parents in Asia deliberately starve their daughters in favor of feeding their sons. “In some places, girls will be forced to go hungry

Speaking recently at a fundraising banquet for the St. Joseph Pregnancy Resource Center in Missouri, Jessen shared her story of survival and her desire to restore protections for all unborn babies, The Catholic Key reports. “I was born in an abortion clinic in Los Angeles, and it was kind of a big deal because I didn’t die,” said Jessen, now 42. She told the crowd how her 17-year-old mother was seven and a half months pregnant when she went to the abortion facility to end her baby’s life. Jessen said the abortionist injected a poisonous saline solution into the womb to kill her. Though it damaged her body and burned her skin, she did not die, and, 18 hours later, she was born, according to the re-

In a mistake that turned deadly, a South Korean hospital is accused of aborting the wrong unborn baby after allegedly mixing up two pregnant patients’ charts. The mother, who is not named in reports, was six weeks pregnant when she and her husband visited the Seoul hospital on Aug. 7 for a pregnancy test, The Korea Times reports. After confirming the pregnancy, the hospital recommended a nutritional supplement; but while she was waiting for it, a nurse and doctor allegedly mixed up her chart with that of another pregnant patient scheduled for an abortion, the report continues. On Monday, Seoul Gangseo Police told ABC News that the doctor and nurse admitted to the mistake, and they are being charged with professional negligence. The alleged victims are a family from Vietnam. They went to the hospital seeking a pregnancy confirmation and prenatal care for their unborn child. Instead, their baby was killed. Here’s more from the Times: It was confirmed that she was six weeks pregnant, and she was told she needed an IV solution for better nutrition. In another case in 2011 in Australia, a hospital allegedly aborted the “wrong” twin after one was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. After discovering that they had aborted the healthy twin by mistake, the doctors allegedly aborted the sick twin as well. LifeNews also reported about another alleged abortion mix-up in India in 2017. The mother was 25-weeks pregnant when a nurse allegedly gave her labor-inducing abortion drugs by mistake. The mother said she gave birth to severely premature twin girls; one survived, but the other did not.
