DESIGN IS THINKING MADE VISUAL

“WE DON’T DO BEIGE” With the exception of our founding father, Anthony, who pops in and out between his adventures, we currently find ourselves operating as an all female firm. It wasn’t planned... it just sort of happened that way. The girls of the AJCD team form a dynamic trio, each bringing unique skills and specialties to the table. Our collective creative vision and philosophy has very naturally synchronized and amplified to form a fluid, effortless syndicate of inspiration, imagination and fun. We like to pretend that we embody the idea that... “the existential existence of the makeup of architecture provides a catalyst of thought provoking reactions within the known fragmented social sphere of the international realm..” ... but the truth is, we just like to create beautiful and remarkable things. We want to give you the unexpected, the crazy, the playful, the out of this world, the extraordinary. We design what we love.

O

IS FOR

ORIGIN AJCD works on a vast array of projects spanning the fields of residential, commercial, mixed use, fit out and heritage over many years and been the recipient of several awards. Established by Anthony Casella in 1971 as a boutique firm, we started out specializing in architectural building design, and a team dedicated to outstanding, unique commercial and residential design solutions. In 2010, after many years working with Anthony, the general running of the studio and business was taken over by his daughter Ara Casella, who is now our Director. Anthony still visits the studio occasionally to take a look at what we are doing, to provide commentary and slivers of priceless advice gleaned from his lifetime of experience.

HOME+OFFICE

RUTH STREET

The Ruth Street building is all about unexpected curves, classic whites and industrial textures with a distinctly nautical vibe. The intention was to keep the history of the factory alive, integrating the old sawtooth, red brick form within the new clean lines and curves of the extension. The building is home to our namesake Anthony J. Casella as well the AJCD studio and has become a bit of a local landmark, often referred to as ‘the white building that looks a bit like a boat’ by our neighbours.

N S NEW CASTLE STREET THE OLD CROW + BOUTIQUE HOTEL

THE OLD CROW

THE OLD CROW + BOUTIQUE HOTEL The development at Newcastle Street has truly been a labour of love. Commencing with the restoration of a small, derelict , heritage home, tenderly stripping back decades of bastardisation to reveal the true beauty underneath; the outcome was the revitalised ‘Old Crow’ restaurant. The celebration of this old home then continued with the development of the boutique hotel at the rear of the property. The new building quite literally envelops the restaurant, wrapping over and around it, integrating the roof within the ground floor of the hotel as a feature. The juxtaposition of the new hotel with the heritage structure has been exaggerated and deliberate. The hotel exhibits industrial, exposed structural materials and bright, contemporary finishes in contrast with the more traditional elements exhibited within the Old Crow.

Frameless glass bathrooms, pop colour stairwells, graffiti, custom recycled timber fencing and quirky art pieces; there are quirky details and surprises to be discovered throughout the hotel from roof to cellar, from streetfront to alleyway.

CLAREMONT CRES

THE

Q The Queens is an institution on Beaufort Street. It has been renovated many times over many years, in this case we were engaged to simply rejuvenate the back of bar display in the main bar area. Taking cues from the heritage of the old pub, we utilised a material palette consisting of raw, salvaged timbers, brass mesh, amber glass and blackened steel. Tying this all together in a very deliberate configuration of display boxes with intricate detailing and carefully executed lighting, the overall effect is a robust, sophisticated, functional display system and fitting backdrop to this iconic venue.

B1 HOUSE // UNDER CONSTRUCTION The brief for this residential project was ‘modern, industrial, sleek’ and the clients have a very clear vision for the aesthetic outcome of their home which aligns perfectly with the AJCD ethos. Exquisite recycled, wired bricks provide a beautiful textural contrast with smooth, ribbed steel cladding and glass to the exterior of the decidedly rectilinear form. Clean lines, exposed concrete and fresh

SC RESIDENCE // UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The holistic vision for this home is one of ‘renovated, heritage factory turned house’., belying the reality that this is a brand-new construction on a small, empty, inner city block of land. It is an artfully deceptive project, combining new materials with old techniques and vice-versa, truly embracing history within the contemporary.

Attention to detail and constant collaboration between designer and trades are paramount within this project. The connection between the owner/builder and design team is such that even the smallest detail is discussed at length before execution on site. Many feature elements have been salvaged or custom built by local artisal craftsmen. A vintage concrete trough, made locally 100 years ago will feature in the underground cellar, red bricks and old barn doors have been salvaged and repurposed, a glass block floor and glass bridge have been specially constructed to allow light and movement to flow between levels and spaces. Concrete walls have been custom fabricated and sealed complete with builders’ notes and scibbles to preserve the activity and atmosphere of the build process for posterity. The personalities of all parties involved in the build
