24 HOURS IN JOSHUA TREE

JOSHUA TREE CHRONICLES This month we traveled to Joshua Tree, an elusive location that attracts creatives for its unique, desolate environment. The arid climate is home to striking foliage that the national park is known for. In the following pages, you’ll see our collection come to life, the best places to stay (hint: research architect Robert Stone), essential places you have to visit, and where you’ll find the best eats and entertainment. Joshua Tree is where you go to find yourself - it’s a journey you won’t soon forget.

A GUIDE TO JOSHUA TREE

S TAY Acido Dorado // The Gold House Check out via Airbnb

Robert Stone’s golden house has been featured in many fashion and editorial campaigns and is a magical estate to stay in if you can swing it. When designing the home, Stone mentions that none of the features have a reference or can be considered separate from the context of the architecture. The spacious mirrored home somehow manages to perfectly mesh in amidst the arid desert of Joshua Tree. If you’re looking for a picturesque home, this is your best bet.

Mojave Sands 62121 Twentynine Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, CA

This rustic oasis is quintessential Joshua Tree; the property is a renovated five-room motel that is strategically situated at the door of the national park. Each room features a private patio and a record player for your favorite tunes as you “zen out.” There’s a communal courtyard so you can get to know your neighbors better and share in the blissful, psychedelic vibes if that’s how you roll.

Rosa Muerta // Casa Noir Check out via Airbnb

In stark contrast to the Acido Dorado, the Rosa Huerta home is a noir fantasy come to life. Robert Stone built this home independently without a client nor an architect at his helm - the idea was to build and design a home for those who are “Cool enough to come out, share it, and support it.” While the dark tones may be daunting, there’s a zen energy that reverberates throughout the home.

E AT & D R I N K Crossroads Cafe Inquire through www.prettyvacantproperties.com

After an evening of debauchery, or becoming one with your surroundings, you may require some sustenance. Let Crossroads Cafe become your go-to spot for the perfect brunch. Might we recommend ordering the banana walnut pancakes? One more thing - this is vegan joint, but don’t let that deter you.

Pappy & Harriet’s 53688 Pioneertown Road, Pioneertown, CA

This infamous eatery and bar was built from a former Western set and is the go-to place for music lovers - the obscure bar attracts talent ranging from Arctic Monkeys to Beach House. Stick to the classics when ordering cocktails - their margarita (on the rocks) is a great place to start.

Joshua Tree Saloon 61835 29 Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, CA

This is another local dive bar that attracts national talent. You can’t make reservations so head there and arrive thirsty. Ordering the Mahi Mahi tacos is a must, and can be paired with beer or a simple drink - this isn’t the place for a fancy cocktail.

VISIT Integratron 2477 Belfield Boulevard, Landers, CA 92285

This structure was built by Ufologist George Van Tassel in 1959, who claimed visitors would not only rejuvenate their senses but could also experience time travel. This acoustically perfect structure will certainly get you centered but we can’t promise anything further. Interesting Fact: Construction costs for the structure were paid through annual UFO conventions, which lasted over 25 years.

Noah Purifoy Outdoor Museum Blair Lane, Joshua Tree, CA

Artist Noah Purifoy has seemingly always crafted art from everyday debris since he was a young boy, and this outdoor museum is an ode to his eccentricity (and genius). This 10-acre property hosts many of Purifoy’s quirky yet approachable art.

Sky’s the Limit // Observatory & Nature Center 9697 Utah Trail, Twentynine Palms, CA

One thing you’re bound to notice is how clear the skies are in Joshua Tree, which makes stargazing the perfect activity for date night. Arrive at the observatory, and let volunteers guide you with constellations, nebulas, etc. The best part - it’s 100% free.

WHO’S THAT GIRL?

KASSIDI BATT // MODEL

What are some of your favorite places in LA?

We met Kassidi in Joshua Tree for our Spring 2016 campaign, where she arrived in a classic vintage Jeep from the seventies. We instantly fell in love with her easy-going and chill demeanor. We asked her a few questions so you can get to know her a little better:

I love going to Gjelina - it has good food, good vibes, and good wine so I go there for lunch and a glass of rosé. Chateau Marmont is unbelievable and you have to go there if you’re visiting. And Malibu - the beach, sushi from Nobu, a good sunset, a little dip in the ocean - how can you beat that?

You live in Venice, which is the it place to visit and live. What’s that like?

Is there a model or actress that inspires you?

I’ve lived in Venice for over five years and I love it. I get to walk out the door and enjoy amazing coffee and food. I go to GTA, which is Gjelina to-go, and they have the best food so it’s kind of a dream. The neighborhood has changed a lot with artists moving out, but that’s sadly the name of the game when it comes to a street like Abbott Kinney. Do you live in a loft or a bungalow? I live in a house - it was built in the 1920’s on the original Venice canals, and it’s so quaint, cozy, and warm. It’s like my little Venice cabin. What are some of your favorite things to do in Venice? I like running on the beach every once in a while, and doing yoga, riding bikes, eating great food, and drinking wine.

Right now, I am in entrepreneur mode so I really look up to Jessica Alba. She’s a great actress, a great mother, an artist, and a successful entrepreneur with the Honest company. She’s trying to do good and that’s pretty awesome. What are you favorite Instagram accounts you follow? I follow a lot of art accounts, especially from the East Coast, so I can always stay up to date. Here are a few: - saatchiart - mocalosangeles - friezeartfair
