Volunteer E-News June 2010 In this issue: Build site update, scheduling reminder, Olympic trash, upcoming events, Women Day update, sheet metal workers partnership, corporate thanks.
Build Site Update From a second floor, to ceiling joists, windows and doors, the Burnaby build site has seen significant progress in the last six months. Thanks to the Roofing Contractors Association of BC who generously donated their labour and materials, we were able to ensure that the roof was completed prior to the winter storms. Focus has now moved inside where drywall preparation is taking place and members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers are nearing completion on the rough wiring for each home. Plumbing inspection has passed in at least two of the units and we are waiting on electrical and framing inspections. Before we know it, these units will be ready for their first coat of paint! The completion of this phase is projected for late fall of this year. This means five of our partner families will experience their first holiday season as homeowners in 2010, bringing our total number of families helped to 21. These families worked very hard to complete their required 500 sweat equity hours to get to this point. This task could not be accomplished without our hard working volunteers. We would be lost without each and everyone one of you, from corporate sponsors to individual. We sincerely appreciate all of the support we have received to make this phase, and previous phases a reality. Stay tuned in the coming months for your invitation to the Phase 5 home dedication. Phase 6, which will be the final townhome phase at the Government Street site, will consist of six residential units, three at ground level which will be adaptable housing and three conventional units above. This is a drastically different design from what we have constructed in the past and will be among the first few Habitat accessible housing developments in Canada. We encourage all of our volunteers to join us later this year when we break ground on the final phase! vancouverhabitat.bc.ca - volunteer@vancouverhabitat.bc.ca - (604) 681-5618 ext. 23 facebook.com/hfhvancouver - twitter @HFHGV_ReStore - flickr.com/photos/hfhgv/
Volunteer Scheduling Reminder The warmer weather brings renewed interest in volunteering at both the build site and ReStores. It is extremely important that all volunteers schedule themselves and wait for a confirmation prior to engaging in any volunteer activity. Habitat must abide by safety requirements which permit only a certain number of people at the site each day. With limited crew leaders, we also want to ensure that we have meaningful work for everyone to do. Please do your part to help us stay safe. To schedule yourself, simply email us at volunteer@vancouverhabitat.bc.ca or call 604-681-5618 and press 4. Please leave a message and include your name, phone number and the time and place where you wish to volunteer. We will confirm your shift within 2 business days. Build Site – Open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8am – 4pm. Due to safety concerns and popularity, we cannot offer half shifts. ReStores – Burnaby and Vancouver locations are open Monday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm. 4 hours shifts are available, a regular weekly or bi-weekly commitment is preferred. *Please note, the ReStores are in the greatest need for volunteers.
Olympic “Garbage”, A Legacy? The 2010 Olympic Games brought a great deal of energy, pride and camaraderie to the city this past February and March. With all of the excitement, many of us many not have given much thought to what would happen to all of the equipment, materials and products after the games. Our ReStores stepped up to the plate and accepted large donations of gently used drywall, insulation, furniture, acoustic foam tile and other items which were used in the construction of temporary structures. Our warehouses were piled to the rafters with all kinds of post-Olympic materials that would otherwise have been destined for landfills. Thanks in part to this new inventory, our ReStores saw their highest earning months to date! Even if only in a small way, these Games have left behind the opportunity to provide support to the community by helping local families in need.

Sheet Metal Workers Partnership The Sheet Metal Workers International Union Local 280 has been helping Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver since we began construction in 1999 at 8745 Government Street. In addition to providing skilled labour for all of our HVAC systems, the union connected us with Ecco Heating Products Ltd. who has generously donated all of the required heating parts for the build. Another meaningful partnership which has been made through the union is with the Sheet Metal Workers Training Centre (SMWTCS) in Burnaby. This facility is dedicated to providing top notch instruction to sheet metal apprentices in BC, much of which is hands on experience. For several years now, these apprentices from this school have fabricated our metal window flashings for the Burnaby build. These pieces, provided at no cost to Habitat, have been installed by our build site volunteers on several phases. The sheet metal students recently began another project for the build: fully adjustable metal saw horses which are more durable than the traditional wooden variety and serve many more purposes. We truly appreciate the continued support from all of these groups. Special thanks to Jud, Jake, Bob, Erik, Kevin, Taylor and Anthony who gave us a tour of the Sheet Metal Training Centre. For more information about the programs offered at SMWTCS, please contact Jud Martell at 604-291-0656 or email judmartell@smwtcs.ca.

Women Day Recap Not even the Vancouver rain can slow these girls down; On Saturday, April 24 we hosted our first Women Day Workshop and Build of 2010. Women from all over the Lower Mainland came out in support of Habitat. The ladies gained hands on experience during the morning’s workshop, learning all about power saws, construction techniques and most importantly, site safety. In the afternoon our enthusiastic group put their new skills to good use and helped out with projects such as window frames and flashing installation on Phase 5. A huge thank you to all of our Women Day participants and our talented instructors for making the day run so smoothly. Because of the tremendous success and overwhelming response to this event, a second Women Day Workshop and Build is expected to be scheduled in late summer. If you are interested in being placed on a waiting list for details, please contact Michelle at volunteer@vancouverhabitat.bc.ca.
