The Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver ReStores put nothing to waste this week, or year-round. During Waste Reduction Week, Lower Mainland residents will be reminded to take an active role in environmental protection and waste minimization by remembering to reduce, reuse and recycle. In celebration of Waste Reduction Week, the Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver ReStores will be Delivery at the Vancouver ReStore slashing prices at both locations for even bigger savings and hosting a DIY workshop at the Burnaby store. This week also marks the 8th Anniversary of the Burnaby location. The Vancouver and Burnaby ReStores help practice the principles of Waste Reduction Week year-round by accepting and reselling quality new and used building materials. They generate funds to support Habitat building programs, while reducing the amount of used materials that end up in landfills. The Habitat ReStores are environmentally friendly building supply stores that make sense.

REMEMBERING Roger HFHGV lost one of its longest serving volunteers this June with the passing of Roger Boychuck. Roger started with Habitat on the build site but quickly found a home volunteering at the ReStore. Roger was there when we opened in 2002. Over the years he became a fi xture in the stores that we’d rely on countless times for help, regardless of the job. If you needed him, he was there. If you spent any time with Roger, you probably got to know a bit about him. Parts of his life had been rough, but he didn’t like to dwell on that. He’d tell you how good he was at demolition, in case you were doing any renovations around the house, and how much he loved going out to eat, in case you were thinking about inviting him. He’d talk about his job or his cat Fluff y, or the other places he volunteered, but mostly he’d talk about the ReStore.

Roger Boychuck

Roger was very proud of the ReStore and the part he played in its success. He loved the idea that all the stuff he was selling was helping build homes and the day was not complete for Roger, until he knew how much we had raised for Habitat. If he couldn’t stay until closing, he would call that evening for a report on the sales.

Someone asked Roger once why he volunteered so much. He explained that sometimes people were not so nice to him. They would make fun of him, or take advantage of him. When he volunteered, things were different. He was just one of the guys, and people didn’t care what he looked like, they were just grateful for the help and the work he did. Roger loved to help. Roger’s generosity touched so many, but he chose Habitat to leave a lasting mark and for that, we are in his debt. Thanks for the help Roger. Sales were good today. You will be missed. —Tom Riessner, ReStore Director

Going GREEN Everyone should do their part to minimize their impact on the environment, with companies being no exception. ReStores are recognized for their green approach, diverting hundreds of tons of product and building supplies away from landfills, but did you know that we are also making efforts in other areas to increase our sustainability? The society office and ReStore operations participate in paper, cardboard, metal and paint recycling. Habitat homes at the Burnaby site are constructed with energy efficient windows and appliances to reduce energy consumption. Looking ahead we plan to extend our green philosophy even further by improving recycling programs, running our ReStore truck on bio-diesel and encouraging build site volunteers to bring their own reusable mug to the site for coffee breaks. Our goal is to be known as one of the greenest non-profit organizations in all of Vancouver.

This builds a collective knowledge base that is invaluable in helping homeowners make better decisions on whom to hire. We encourage homeowners who have purchased materials for their homes or who have hired trades people for improvements to take a few moments to complete a HomeStars review.
