Introduction

‘In A Blue Funk’ is based on the experiences that my mother had when she had been diagnosed with cancer, I have portrayed some of my emotions and feelings when she was going through all the trauma such as radiotherapy, also I have included my mother’s point of view as well as mine, so there is a slight contrast in thoughts and emotions. This type spec will show you the grid methods that I have used to lay everything out, the font families I have used, the colour scheme, front cover, paper stock, images and the binding technique.

The page size of my book is 148x200 mm, I wanted to keep the book small to represent the size of a small diary, but big enough so it wasn’t too hard to lay everything out. I went for a simple grid 6 rows x 3 columns. I kept it quite strict so that it was a constant flow with in the book. I made the gutter 18.9 pt, (6.667mm) so that I would have enough spacing in between the images and the bosy text. Also I kept it to a mutiple of 12.6pt which was my leading and baseline grid height, just so I could keep everything consistent

I used two particular fonts for my book, for the headers I used Avenir Black, and I used a lot of the Minion Pro family for primarily the body text, but I also used it for quotes and sub headings. I had a sans serif for the titles and a serif for the body text so that I’ve kept to a traditional rule, but dressing the book with a contemporary style.

I have used my mother’s handwriting as this reflects the fact that I have based the book on my mother’s diary. I feel like a persons handwriting can reflect on what they are like. It’s like a ‘visual voice’. The picture represents the three stages of the book. The hand represent the first stage which means what my mother had beein given (the cancer) and what she had to deal with. The chemical symbol shows that this was the stage when my mother had to go through all of the treatment, and this is when she started to take the medication for the cancer. The third and final stage represents the final stages of my mother’s life.

I stuck to a very strict colour scheme obviously because the book is call ‘In A Blue Funk’ but it was also to capture the essence of a hospital feel. Blue is an unatural colour, and that exactly what I was going for, when my mother was in hospital all the time, it was generally an unatural place for her to be in.

I chose a low gsm (102) matte paper, just because I didn’t want there to be any texture to it. I wanted it to be clean and crisp. I also. used a high gsm off white card for the cover

Images & Photography

Most of the photography I had used for my book was bought from shutterstock. I did intend do get some photographs of the inside of Cheltenham Oncology Centre but I was turned away unfortunately, I did manage to get some photographs of the outside of the building though. Besides photographs I added my own illustrations to the book to represent different stages of the cancer journey – 'Radiotherapy', 'Medicine' and 'Pain'. I added the scans of certain segmants of my mother's diary so I could annotate them in the book. I also made some vector illustrations just to add the variations of images.

Binding

My publication will be perfect bound, as I think this is the best way to bind a book with a lot of pages. Personally I feel there were no binding techniques that suited my rationale.
