Success Story

When Her Job Disappeared, Marti, 68, Had Nowhere to Live But Her Car As a mental health professional, Marti Gitto-Brady, 68, has spent her entire career helping other people survive difficult chapters in their lives. With a master’s degree in counseling and a 20-year career in the non-profit sector - or as a counseor, she never imagined she’d be the one needing help.

But when the Orlando agency in which she worked lost grant funding, her job was one of the first to go. Certain that another job was just around the corner, she got by on unemployment benefits and savings. When those ran out and the job market hit rock bottom, she faced a difficult decision – keep her car or her apartment.

In July, she and her dog Taz moved into her Honda, which became their home for the next six months. Dealing with the heat, mosquitoes and constant fear for her safety took a terrible toll on her mental and physical health, but she never gave up hope.

Knowing she would need the car to continue her job search, she chose the car and prepared to become homeless. Using what little money she had left, Marti stored her belongings. In July, she and her dog Taz moved into her Honda, which became their home for the next six months. Dealing with the heat, mosquitoes and constant fear took a terrible toll on her mental and physical health, but she never gave up hope.

Eventually Marti found help through a United Way administered program that helps people avoid or recover from homelessness. With ongoing support from case managers, she and Taz moved into a small, comfortable house just before winter arrived.

Now working full-time with Orange County Head Start, Marti is rebuilding her life. She shares her story in hopes of helping others. “Homelessness steals your sense of self,” she said.

“If it wasn’t for the help I received through United Way, I don’t know where I’d be today.”

Thanks to your Leadership support of United Way, Marti and thousands of other local residents have received critical assistance with housing, utilities, food and other basic needs, which is helping them survive these difficult times.

Message from United Way’s Board Chairman & President/CEO Dear Friend, Over the past year, our community has been rocked to its core by the ongoing financial crisis. Through no fault of their own, thousands of hardworking Central Floridians have lost their jobs, savings, their homes and everything they’ve worked a lifetime to achieve.

Some have been loyal United Way contributors who never imagined they’d someday need assistance. Now unable to pay for housing, utilities, food and other basic necessities, they have nowhere else to turn.

As a Leadership Investor, your gift has helped provide a safe, secure place for homeless families to sleep; quality after-school programs for children; warm, nutritious meals for seniors and so much more.

We are deeply grateful for your tremendous generosity, which has enabled United Way and our partner agencies to provide critical help and hope to more than 363,800 local residents.

A glance at the daily headlines reveals divergent opinions whether or not the national economy is improving.

While some experts believe that a fragile recovery is underway, others warn of a “double-dip” recession.

Here in our own community, there is no such uncertainty. With growth and construction – the lifeblood of the regional economy – still flat and expected to remain so for the next several years, jobs are not returning.

And as residents exhaust savings, unemployment benefits and family generosity, more and more are slipping toward the brink.

2009-10 Campaign Summary & Message from Chair

Thanks to outstanding leadership and generosity in a time of community crisis, United Way’s 2009-10 campaign succeeded in raising millions of dollars to help Central Floridians in need.

Led by Des Cummings Jr., Executive Vice President of Florida Hospital and the Florida Division of AHS, the campaign’s successful conclusion was celebrated in April when it was announced that United Way’s total revenue for 2009-10 reached $26.5 million, including $17,117,229 raised by the workplace campaign.

Leadership Investors, totaling 2,315, were a critical component of this success, donating a combined total of $3,704,415.

In all, 478 companies participated in the campaign, which provides critical support to 142 programs operated by such well-known agencies as the Coalition for the Homeless, the Salvation Army, the Boys & Girls Clubs, Seniors First and dozens of others that are doing life-changing work in our community.

Among the campaign’s top 10 corporate supporters were three companies that consistently belong to the Million Dollar Club: Walt Disney Company - $3,200,000 Publix Super Markets, Inc. - $2,351,365 Lockheed Martin Corporation - $1,160,577 Other generous companies in the top-10 donor list included Darden Restaurants, Inc., Orange County Government, SunTrust Bank, AT&T, UPS, Tupperware Brands Corporation and Siemens Energy, Inc.

Looking back over my tenure as United Way’s 2009-10 Campaign Chair, I am awed by Central Florida’s outpouring of compassion and support on behalf of our neighbors in need.

When the campaign kicked off last fall, we knew we faced significant challenges. But in spite of the worst economic crisis in modern times, our community rallied together to raise an astounding $17,117,229 in the workplace campaign alone.

Turning aside concerns as to how the recession might affect their own futures, hundreds of corporate partners and countless individual donors stepped forward to help neighbors who are struggling to find jobs, feed their children and keep a roof over their heads.

As a Leadership donor, you are a major part of this success. By giving generously and setting an example for others to follow, you are improving lives and helping make Central Florida even stronger.

Investing In Results

Focusing Work & Resources INVESTING IN RESULTS Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW) is moving in a bold new direction focused on prevention, known as Investing in Results. It’s a strategic approach designed to address the root causes of problems that impact people’s lives and send ripple effects across our entire community.

We know that even with great work by HFUW and our agency partners – as well as tremendous generosity from our community – health and human service problems have continued to grow and compound. Not only is prevention the right thing to do for people, it also makes smart economic sense. Research shows that for every dollar spent on prevention, a minimum of $7 is saved on intervention.

In seeking long-term solutions to our community’s most pressing problems, our areas of focus include: • Building Safe Communities • Improving Financial Stability • Developing Healthy Children and Families • Alleviating Hunger and Homelessness Community Problems Require Community Solutions United Way is in a unique position to lead the community in creating new prevention-based solutions. But HFUW and our partner agencies can’t do this work alone. To move the needle, we need all segments of the community working together.

Making progress on complex issues will require steady, sustained focus over the next several years. Guided by community volunteers, United Way will measure results and report back to the community every step of the way.

Dividing the Dollars Heart of Florida United Way was responsible for raising, managing and distributing $26.5 million throughout Central Florida in fiscal year 2009-10.

Known as "total resources," these include all dollars raised through workplace giving campaigns, leadership giving, special events and other donor-related activities. It also includes monies raised through United Way’s Stewardship Program, which funds emergency food, shelter and utility assistance programs; the Gifts in Kind Center; and the Ryan White Part B/General Revenue Program, which supports those affected by HIV/AIDS. These, combined with other programs, services and resources, make Heart of Florida United Way, the region’s largest supporter of local health and human service charitable organizations.

With your help, United Way touched the lives of 363,888 people last year. From children to seniors, to those recovering from job loss or a family health crisis, United Way-supported programs help people at every stage of life.

By percentages, allocations made across the Investing in Results focus care areas are as follows: Building Safe Communities — 23 percent Improving Financial Stability — 17 percent Developing Healthy Children and Families — 30 percent Alleviating Hunger and Homelessness — 30 percent

The Year in Review

CAMPAIGN KICK OFF Central Florida’s top companies and business leaders came together to help kick off United Way’s 2009-10 Campaign, chaired by Des Cummings Jr., Executive Vice President of Florida Hospital and the Florida Division of AHS. Millions of dollars were raised to help local residents survive the economic crisis.

UNITED WAY DAYS OF CARING More than 1,700 corporate volunteers took part in United Way Days of Caring, the region’s largest community-wide volunteer event. Lockheed Martin led the way with nearly 900 employees participating. Publix, Disney, Coca-Cola, Fifth Third Bank and many other companies also took part.

18TH ANNUAL CHEF’S GALA Tantalizing food from 20-plus tops chefs, fine wine, and tremendous support from WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort and other sponsors combined to make Chef ’s Gala another delicious success. A full 95% of dollars raised went to support local nonprofits.

LIVE UNITED CELEBRATION Honoring the generous spirit of our community, the LIVE UNITED event celebrated the end of a successful fundraising campaign and the 450plus companies who successfully supported it.

Lauren Rowe, news anchor for WKMG Local 6, emceed the festivities.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON Best-selling author Sapphire, whose novel inspired the Oscar-winning film Precious, served as keynote speaker for the luncheon. Describing education as “transformational,” she urged the group to continue its efforts to help improve the lives of local women and children in need.
