BLOG.RONAGINDIN.COM: 2013 Chef's Gala -- Eat Bubby, Eat
2013 Chef's Gala -- Eat Bubby, Eat The 2013 Chef’s Gala was supposed to be part of my TV appearance last Saturday. The gig was cancelled so Fox 35 could cover the Boston marathon bombings, but I still want you to know about Chef’s Gala. It's a food, wine, entertainment and silent auction extravaganza that raises money for Heart of Florida United Way. It's a splurge -- $275 per person, $500 per couple -- but consider attending anyway if you have the means. (If it helps, part of the ticket fee is tax-deductible).

Chef’s Gala is, indeed, a gala event. It’s held within a dramatic, spacious pavilion at Epcot (no park entrance is necessary to join the fun), and all the proceeds benefit neighbors in need through United Way. You start with sparkling wine and cocktails, which most people sip while perusing the silent auction items. Disclaimer: I worked a bit with the silent auction committee this year so I'm biased. That said, local businesses donated well more than 125 items (maybe way more; I'll ask for the exact number if you request it). You can get handbags, restaurant meals, a wine and cheese tasting, a visit to an elephant sanctuary, a Vegas getaway, a Winter Park shopping spree ... just so many cool things, some for a song. Then, at 7:30 sharp, you meander into the main room.

You'll meander. We dart. We dash. Chefs from more than 20 restaurants will be perched at stations scattered around the room, each dishing up one really special appetizer-size food. Most people wander from the front to the back. Our system: Identify the restaurants that tempt us most and run over, especially if they're in the back away from the initial rush of guests.

Here is one example of the food that will be offered: arugula "malfatti" with garden basil, fava beans, and greens. It will be prepared and served "on stage" from Siro: Urban Italian Kitchen.

I pre-tasted two other savory dishes, and both were also extraordinary. My photos came out lousy though, which is why I'm not posting them.

So, picture it: a room full of 20+ dishes like that. What’s more, wines are poured next to each station. You could, in theory, sample dozens of wines in two-and-a-half hours. It’s all included in the price. Really. It's sort of a value when you look at that way.

So, if you love to try new flavors and enjoy hobnobbing with other food and wine fanatics, and you want to help out Orlandoans who really need assistance – since United Way does a lot of that – get yourself a ticket. You'll be eating and drinking splendidly while helping the folks in your community.
