Dear Leadership Investor, As we all know, the past year has been extremely difficult for thousands of people in Central Florida. Record-high unemployment, reduced work hours, soaring foreclosure rates, dwindling nonprofit resources and more have taken a terrible toll on many of our neighbors. Though devastating, the ongoing crisis has also highlighted one of our community’s greatest strengths – the compassionate generosity of leaders like you who understand the importance of helping people who are struggling. In the months since, the strength and resolve of our community have been tested by the most serious economic crisis since the Great Depression. While many Leadership donors, businesses, foundations and others have responded quickly and generously, the crisis has strengthened our conviction that new solutions are needed. Over the past decade poverty, crime, hunger, homelessness, family violence and other critical problems have grown, become more complex and weakened the health of our community. That’s a major reason why United Way is investing in prevention-based strategies that

Thanks to you, homeless families have a safe, secure place to stay while rebuilding their lives, frail seniors are receiving warm, nutritious meals and children are thriving in quality daycare and after-school programs. While opinions vary as to when the economy will fully rebound, one thing is certain – the lingering effects of this crisis will be felt for months, possibly years to come. For this reason and many more, I urge you to continue to give as you have so generously done in the past. Leadership Registry – 2008-09 Campaign Summary

Faced with one of the most challenging economies in recent history, Heart of Florida United Way’s 2008-09 campaign succeeded in raising $17,818,000 to help local people in need. Surpassing last year’s efforts by $61,000, the campaign was chaired by Orange County Mayor Richard T. Crotty whose leadership and dedication rallied support from all segments of the community. Leadership Investors, totaling 2,485, were a critical component of the campaign. Combined, they contributed $4,283,139, which helped United Way attain its fourth consecutive year of campaign growth. In all, more than 450 companies took part in the campaign, which provides critical support to nearly 100 local health and human service agencies such as the Boys & Girls Clubs, Meals on Wheels, Coalition for the Homeless and many more that are doing life changing work in our community. Among the campaign’s top supporters were three companies that consistently belong to the Million Dollar Club: Walt Disney Company Publix Super Markets, Inc. Lockheed Martin Corp.

Although the past year has been a difficult one for many in our community, it’s also been a time of incredible generosity and caring. As always, when times get tough Central Floridians respond in great and generous ways. Nowhere is this more evident than in the success of United Way’s 2008-09 campaign, which I had the honor of leading. A campaign of this magnitude requires tremendous teamwork, and I was fortunate to have the support of a great cabinet and thousands of leadership investors like you who are committed to making a difference. During my tenure as campaign chair, I had many opportunities to learn more about United Way and the tremendous work it’s doing in our community. As local need continues to grow, United Way is providing strong leadership – not just in fundraising, but also in bringing partners together to address serious problems. Focusing Work & Resources After helping millions of Central Floridians over the past 70 years, United Way is moving in a bold new direction focused on prevention. It’s a fresh strategic approach that addresses the root causes of problems before people’s lives and our community are impacted. We know that even with great work by HFUW and our agency partners – as well as tremendous generosity from our community – health and human service problems have continued to grow and compound. Not only is prevention the right thing to do for people, it also makes smart economic sense. Research shows that for every dollar spent on prevention, a minimum of $7 is saved on intervention. In seeking long-term solutions to our community’s most pressing problems, our areas of focus include:

• Building Safe Communities • Improving Financial Stability • Developing Healthy Children and Families • Alleviating Hunger and Homelessness

United Way and local agencies can’t do this work alone. To move the needle, we need all segments of the community working together. Long-term change won’t happen over night, but together we can improve lives and make Central Florida a healthier, more vibrant community for all.

Community Problems Require Community Solutions

As our region’s largest supporter of health and human service charities, HFUW is in a unique position to lead the community in creating new prevention-based solutions. Making progress on complex issues will require steady, sustained focus over the next several years. United Way, guided by community volunteers, will measure progress and report results back to you and the community every step of the way.

Dividing the Dollars Heart of Florida United Way was responsible for raising and managing $24,309,682 throughout Central Florida in fiscal year 2008-09. Total resources include all dollars raised through workplace giving campaigns, leadership giving, special events and other donor-related activities. It also includes monies raised through United Way’s Stewardship Program, which funds emergency food, shelter and utility assistance programs; the Gifts in Kind Center; and the Ryan White Part B/General Revenue Program, which supports those affected by HIV/AIDS. These, combined with other programs, services and resources, make Heart of Florida United Way, the region’s largest supporter of local health and human service charitable organizations. With your help, United Way touched the lives of 364,060 people. From children to seniors, to those recovering from job loss or a family health crisis, United Way-supported programs help people at every stage of life. By percentages, allocations made across the Investing in Results focus care areas are as follows: Building Safe Communities — 19.54 percent Improving Financial Stability — 14.84 percent Developing Healthy Children and Families — 39.52 percent Alleviating Hunger and Homelessness — 26.10 percent

United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society (ADT) recognizes the generosity of individuals contributing at the highest levels of personal giving. Donating gifts of $10,000 or more annually, these caring philanthropists demonstrate a profound commitment to helping those in need. Family Survives Financial Crisis Thanks to Your Support of United Way

Even before the economic crisis began, John and Susan* knew they were headed for trouble. Like many working families, living expenses, medical bills and credit card balances grew every month, but with two steady incomes they managed to juggle obligations. But when the company they both worked for eliminated their jobs, their lives began to unravel. John found work quickly, but Susan was unemployed for nearly a year, which pushed their battered finances to the breaking point. When they finally sought help from Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) the couple was several months behind on bills and close to losing their home. Thanks to advice from CCCS, a United Way-supported agency that helps people eliminate debt, save for homes and devise workable budgets, John and Susan learned how to manage their finances. Now nearly debt free, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re rebuilding their credit, savings and ability to survive another unexpected crisis. * To protect clientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; identities, different names have been used.

This is a time of great challenges. Cycles of poverty, crime, homelessness, high-school drop-out rates and domestic violence are just a few of the serious problems that are exacerbated by the tough economy.

United Way also offers the flexibility to focus giving on specific groups – such as children and seniors – or allows you to simply support a broad array of local agency programs that help Central Floridians at every stage of life.

Fortunately, United Way is doing something about it. As Central Florida’s largest supporter of health and human service organizations, United Way is partnering with civic and business leaders, elected officials, academics, philanthropists, ordinary citizens and others to find new, more effective solutions for responding to growing community needs.

The Year in Review

Campaign Kick Off Hundreds of local business and civic leaders attended United Way’s 2008-09 campaign kick off, hosted by the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce. The campaign raised more than $17.8 million to help local people in need.

United Way Days Of Caring Nearly 1,600 corporate volunteers took part in Days of Caring, the region’s largest volunteer event. Lockheed Martin led the way, with 920 employees participating. Publix Super Markets Inc., Walt Disney World Resort, at&t, FedEx and many other companies also took part.

17th Annual Chef’s Gala Extraordinary food, fine wine and tremendous support from WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort and other sponsors helped make Chef ’s Gala a resounding success. More than $170,000 was raised to help Central Floridians in need.

LIVE UNITED CELEBRATION Honoring the spirit of community, the LIVE UNITED event celebrated the end of a successful fundraising campaign and the efforts of all who supported it. WKMG Local 6 anchor Lauren Rowe emceed the luncheon, attended by more 450 businesses and community leaders.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON ABC News correspondent Lynn Sherr served as keynote speaker for the United Way Women’s Leadership Luncheon. It was one of several events the group held to raise awareness, funds and volunteer support to address challenges that disproportionately affect women and children.
