4.

For students to learn about ancient Mayan culture.

Materials In order to complete the lesson, each student should have: • A ruler • Colored pencils • A piece of drawing paper • A graphite pencil

Procedures 1.

Hand out paper to each of the students and have them take out the materials needed for the activity (listed above.)

2.

Explain that they will be following and drawing along as I draw a Mayan hieroglyph of a typical Mayan man.

3.

Draw on the board a 3 x 3 grid on the chalkboard with white chalk and make sure the students have followed along on their pieces of paper with their pencils.

4.

Then, while drawing on the chalkboard, explain what I am drawing and how to keep it in proportion using the grid as a guide.

• Start drawing the head and then the facial features. • Then add the hat and birds on top of the hat. • Then add the outer part of the arms. • Add the chest plate with decorations. • Then add the hands and then the legs and feet. • Below, draw the rock pile that he is sitting on.

5.

Once the students have drawn the outline with pencil, they can color in the hieroglyph with their colored pencils how they see fit as well as decorate the background.
