SHREVEPORT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MICHAEL BUTTERMAN, MUSIC DIRECTOR
Fill Your Life With Music 2013-2014 WILLIS -KNIGHTON MASTERWORKS SERIES
Dear friends, There’s nothing quite like the thrill of live orchestral music. The sound envelops you, lifts you on its wings, and takes you on an emotional journey that is by turns exhilarating, relaxing, thought-provoking and rejuvenating. The Shreveport Symphony 2013-2014 Willis-Knighton Masterworks season has it all—everything from the lighthearted to the deeply profound. Brilliant music presented by some of the greatest artists in the world today. I hope you’ll accept our invitation to “Fill Your Life With Music” this season. The core of our programming includes well-known classics by titans like Brahms (Symphony No. 1), Sibelius (Finlandia), Dvořák (New World Symphony), and Mozart (Requiem). In April, you can enjoy the world’s best-loved guitar concerto— a piece that you already know, even if you don’t know it by name! We’ll also celebrate anniversary years for both Wagner and Strauss in a virtuoso showcase for our orchestra and two guest artists. Along the way, we’ll introduce you to exciting new discoveries from composers like Philip Lasser (whose piano concerto was recorded by our soloist, Simone Dinnerstein, and the Atlanta Symphony earlier in the season), Jon Lord (from the rock group Deep Purple), and Silvestre Revueltas. We’re thrilled to present a slate of guest artists that would be the envy of many top-tier symphonies. Soprano (and Centenary alumna) Twyla Robinson regularly appears with the world’s great orchestras. Violinist Jennifer Koh is fresh off her New York Philharmonic debut, and pianist Simone Dinnerstein is the most successful classical recording artist of the past decade. We’re also pleased to introduce one of the elite guitarists in the world, Jason Vieaux. Last season’s sold-out Movie Masterpieces concert returns in a “sequel” with more unforgettable film classics and another collaboration with Oscar-winning Moonbot Studios. The 2013-2014 season will also mark the return of two highly acclaimed guests from the recent past: Sarah Jane McMahon and Byron Stripling. Sarah Jane will headline our ever-popular Holiday Pops concerts, which will again feature the talents of the Louisiana Dance Theatre along with our Children’s Chorus. Byron was an absolute sensation in 2010 and will return with a new program to help us celebrate Mardi Gras in style. In addition to our orchestral offerings, we are excited to introduce our new Noel Foundation, Inc. Chamber Music Series, which will bring together the talents of our guest artists and some of the top SSO musicians. I invite you to join our ever-increasing family of season subscribers who guarantee themselves priority seating, discounted prices and special benefits. We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be a year of remarkable and memorable artistic experiences. Enjoy!

SEASON FINALE: FROM THE NEW WORLD SIMONE DINNERSTEIN, PIANO Michael Butterman, conductor SATURDAY, MAY 3 7:30 PM MAURICE RAVEL PHILIP LASSER ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK
Le tombeau de Couperin Piano Concerto Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”)
The evening begins with one of Ravel’s most personal creations, Le tombeau de Couperin, a set of memorials for the French composer’s friends who had died in uniform. Then chart-topping recording artist SIMONE DINNERSTEIN presents a fresh, new concerto written especially for her by Philip Lasser, an American composer with strong French ties. And we close with Dvořák’s masterful “New World” Symphony.
MUSICAL DISCOVERY SERIES The SSO’s Musical Discovery Series, with underwriting from the Caddo Parish School Board, is an area-wide educational program serving schools in Caddo and Bossier Parishes. The Musical Discovery Series includes five distinct programs, each specifically designed to teach one or more aspects of music:
DISCOVERY CONCERTS During the 2013-14 season, the SSO will invite Caddo and Bossier Parish fourth and fifth graders to performances by the full symphony orchestra at RiverView Theater.
SMALL ENSEMBLES SSO Small Ensemble performances will be offered in a variety of forms to Caddo and Bossier schools, and will be particularly aimed toward underserved schools.
GUEST ARTIST MASTER CLASSES SSO Guest Artist Master classes will bring national caliber artists to work directly with the students of the area, both at the college and high school levels.
MUSIC MENTORS SSO musicians will also serve as coaches and mentors to small groups of public school students who are already participating in band or orchestra programs, giving them important one-on-one support and guidance in their musical studies.
MOMENT OF MUSIC Up to five participating schools will be sent a curriculum of classical music sections. Each week one selection is played for the entire school each morning. At the end of the week a lesson is given covering history, composition, musical instruments involved, and information about the composer.
MUSIC MEMORY Music Memory is a contest in which participating schools work with third, fourth and fifth graders to teach them to recognize selected musical works. Each school then chooses teams of students who must correctly identify the title and composer of each piece at a final live concert by the Shreveport Symphony. The Musical Discovery Series will serve over 21,000 students, providing enrichment to existing school curricula, and, in some cases, providing the only musical experiences the students will have.
OPEN REHEARSALS Open Rehearsals will be available to music students, who can observe and learn from the professional preparation process between the artists and the maestro.
