2013-2014 SEASON

CELEBRATING

25 YEARS CHURCH OF ST. IGNATIUS LOYOLA

K. SCOT T WARREN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 25th Anniversary Season of Sacred Music in a Sacred Space, where for a quarter of a century exquisite music has resounded from the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, one of New York City’s most visually stunning houses of worship. This series has simply been called “invaluable” by The New York Times. Here, the music of the masters soars in our superb acoustic, speaking of the sublime from across the centuries. Here, we gather and invite music to illuminate, soothe and uplift us.

Sacred Music in a Sacred Space is anchored by the internationally acclaimed Choir and Orchestra of St. Ignatius Loyola, and features exemplary vocal soloists such as Metropolitan Opera bass Morris Robinson. World-class recitalists offer inventive programs on the N.P. Mander Organ, New York City’s largest mechanical action pipe organ.

As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, I am particularly delighted to welcome the GRAMMY®-award-winning ensemble Chanticleer to its new home for A Chanticleer Christmas in New York. Called “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker, Chanticleer’s programs, in conjunction with our own Advent Lessons and Carols Service and beloved annual Christmas Concerts, create a rich palette of December offerings. We have designed this season’s Choral Subscription Concerts to draw from four spiritual traditions: Roman Catholic, Russian Orthodox, German Lutheran, and Jewish. Each of them speaks musically of sacred love and divine compassion, the struggle to understand life’s tribulations, and the ecstasy of eternity. Following each Choral Subscription Concert, the evening continues with a light reception in Wallace Hall, where the musicians and I look forward to joining you for conversation and refreshment. Will you join me on this creative journey? I look forward to seeing you in the fall as we begin this 25th Anniversary season together.

Christmas Concerts A CHANTICLEER CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK Sunday, December 8—4 PM Monday, December 9—7 PM Chanticleer has long been a beloved part of Christmas in New York City, and Sacred Music in a Sacred Space is happy to welcome them to their new home. A Chanticleer Christmas celebrates the mystery and wonder of Christmas with an elegant blend of traditional carols, medieval and Renaissance sacred works, and new holiday gems. Called “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker, GRAMMY®award-winning Chanticleer was named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008. Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for their “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its 12 male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. A Chanticleer Christmas is in high demand at the Christmas season, with performances from coast to coast in venues including our own St. Ignatius Loyola, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and churches and missions in the San Francisco Bay Area. A Chanticleer Christmas is broadcast annually on over 300 affiliated public radio stations nationwide. PREFERRED: $75
