Dear Friends,
As our 26th season begins, we are filled with gratitude to you, our audience. You support us year after year in our mission to explore the best of the choral arts and the spiritual magnitude contained therein. Our focal point this season is The Greater Good, the idea that true justice and freedom for all can only be achieved through individual sacrifice. To that end, we begin and end the season with two Mass settings of cosmic proportions: Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor and Bach’s Mass in B minor. Taking this concept a step further, our Second Annual Lenten concert PASSION: Sacrifice and Surrender will include 16th and 17th century a cappella motets that focus on the suffering of Jesus as well as our own trials of the spirit that call us to act on behalf of the greater good. Because we make our home in a parish with a long-standing commitment to social justice, Sacred Music in a Sacred Space celebrates the launch of our new chamber music series, Caritas Concerts. Set in Wallace Hall, these concerts have the appeal of the less formal, intimate salon concerts of the 19th century, complete with light receptions before and after the performance, giving the audience a chance to mingle with the artists. As the name suggests, Caritas Concerts are benefit concerts, with all proceeds directed toward charities that address social justice concerns. As always, Christmas at SMSS is a grand and festive season. We begin with our popular Advent Lessons and Carols service, a sublime and contemplative liturgy that will feed your soul as the holiday rush begins. For the second year in a row, we proudly welcome Grammy®-award winning Chanticleer presenting A Chanticleer Christmas. Finally, our own Christmas concerts, hailed by The New York Times as “part of the essence of Christmas in New York,” will feature the entire scope of Music Ministry here at St. Ignatius, as we present highlights from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. We warmly invite you to make Sacred Music in a Sacred Space your cultural and spiritual home this season. You are most welcome here.

Symphony No. 97 Great Mass in C minor

In the opening concert of the season, Viennese masters Haydn and Mozart supply dramatically expressive works on a grand scale. Completed in 1792, the majesty of Haydn’s Symphony No. 97 forms an interesting pairing with Mozart’s 1783 Mass in C minor. An intensely personal, rule-breaking composition, the Mass in C minor is a riveting statement about the complex mixture of joy and pain in human relationships, one that transcended the proscribed Austrian Mass tradition at the time of its composition.

Mass in B minor
Monumental, intricate and full of insight into the widest spectrum of human experience, Bach’s B Minor Mass is widely considered the greatest composition in the Western classical canon. Although completed in 1749, the work was never performed in its entirety during the composer’s lifetime, and did not receive its first full performance until over 100 years later in 1859.

Chanticleer has long been a beloved part of Christmas in New York City, and Sacred Music in a Sacred Space is happy to host them in their new home. A Chanticleer Christmas celebrates the mystery and wonder of Christmas with an elegant blend of traditional carols, medieval and Renaissance sacred works, and new holiday gems. Called “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker, GRAMMY®-award-winning Chanticleer was named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008. Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for their “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its 12 male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. A Chanticleer Christmas is in high demand at the Christmas season, with performances from coast to coast in venues including our own St. Ignatius Loyola Church, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and churches and missions in the San Francisco Bay Area. Magnificently constructed, richly sonorous, and breathlessly beautiful, Tallis’s 40-voice motet Spem in alium is one of the towering masterpieces of Renaissance sacred vocal music.
