The Romantic Spirit 2014 SEASON: JULY 8 to AUGUST 14
Dear friends,
We are offering six weeks of orchestral masterpieces that not only celebrate The Romantic Spirit, but showcase the full range of sounds that only a live symphony orchestra can create. Our chamber music concerts, curated by our fantastic musicians, will be full of musical gems not to be missed. We’ll perform beloved works of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Vivaldi, and others, but we will also discover exciting musical treasures, heard at the NHMF for the very first time. In partnership with The Walden School, a summer music camp in Dublin, NH, Nathaniel Stookey will be the first composer-in-residence in a new concert series called Composer Portraits. This Classics Concert will begin with his, Go!, an exciting and fun concert opener that Nathaniel wrote just last year. Stookey’s The Composer is Dead, one of the most widely performed pieces of classical music composed in the last 10 years, will be performed alongside music by composers who Nathaniel greatly admires. Stookey’s Piano Trio and String Quartet will also be featured in a chamber music concert this summer. Through our educational outreach program, in partnership with the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire, we have touched the lives of many children throughout the state who normally don’t have access to the arts, particularly music. This will culminate this summer with our Family Concert, designed to entertain, engage, and educate people of all ages. We also continue our 603 Series, reaching new audiences with performances throughout New Hampshire. Finally, we welcome Dan Perkins, our new principal guest conductor, to the NHMF family. Maestro Perkins will begin his tenure by preparing the chorus for Verdi’s Requiem, but expect to see him on the podium in the summers to come! As you can see, there’s a lot to be excited about!

NHMF EDUCATION PROGRAMS The New Hampshire Music Festival is proud to support music education in our state through an exciting partnership with the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire and support from the New Hampshire Electric Co-op, State Council on the Arts, Ella F. Anderson Trust and Cogswell Benevolent Trust. Through this collaboration over 2,500 students in the North Country, Lakes Region, and Upper Valley had the opportunity to take part in unique, interactive musical experiences from a traditional Andean music and dance ensemble to a mime dancer! The New Hampshire Music Festival also had the opportunity to work closely with students in the Wentworth, Rumney, and Campton Elementary school districts in a multi-part sideby-side band program. NHMF and the schools commissioned Plymouth State University Music Education major Kyle Quirion to produce an elementary level band piece to feature festival oboist Sandra Flesher. Through the process, Sandra met with students to answer questions about music, rehearse their piece, and perform at their end of the year concerts. We are looking forward to continued partnerships with Plymouth State University, the Arts Alliance, and the surrounding communities. If you’re interested in helping these programs develop, please contact us at 603.238.9007. Ella F. Anderson Trust Cogswell Benevolent Trust
