SEASON 27 YEARS

“A stirring performance... positively thrilling” ~The New York Times

K. SCOTT WARREN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

DEAR FRIENDS, For 26 years, you, our dedicated audience, have made Sacred Music in a Sacred Space a thriving cultural institution in New York City for sacred classical music. YOU are the key component in our program, and we thank you for your continued presence and enthusiasm! As we begin our 27th year, we turn to music of our own shores. American music reflects the diversity of America itself with a teeming array of musical styles. Everything from the European classical tradition to spirituals, folk songs, jazz and blues is fodder for the American composer. The season opens with Leonard Bernstein’s jazzy Chichester Psalms and Samuel Barber’s evocative Adagio for Strings/Agnus Dei, and closes with an evening of songs and spirituals arranged by such masters as Hall Johnson, William Dawson, Adolphus Hailstork and Bobby McFerrin. In between, you’ll find the New York City premiere of William Culverhouse’s poignant Requiem for choir and harp and Ohio native Frank Ferko’s gripping Stabat Mater, as well as works by Philadelphia composer Jennifer Higdon, award-winning Minnesota composer Abbie Betinis and the late Stephen Paulus. We are pleased to announce the second season of Caritas Concerts for charity. In their debut season last year, the Caritas Concerts raised over $10,000 for Jesuit Volunteer Corps and LifeWay Network. With your generous participation, we hope to raise even more this season! As always, Christmas at SMSS brings some of our most cherished concerts. For the third year in a row, we proudly welcome Grammy®-award-winning Chanticleer in two performances of A Chanticleer Christmas. Sing We Noel, our beloved annual Christmas concerts—this year on two consecutive Sunday afternoons—are part performance, part sing-along, all joyous fun! See you at the concerts!

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS A CHANTICLEER CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK Friday, December 4, 2015 at 7 PM Sunday, December 6, 2015 at 4 PM

Chanticleer has long been a beloved part of Christmas in New York City, and Sacred Music in a Sacred Space is happy to host them in their new home. A Chanticleer Christmas celebrates the mystery and wonder of Christmas with an elegant blend of traditional carols, medieval and Renaissance sacred works, and new holiday gems. Called “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker, Grammy®-awardwinning Chanticleer was named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008. Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for their “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its 12 male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. A Chanticleer Christmas is in high demand at the Christmas season, with performances from coast to coast in venues including our own St. Ignatius Loyola Church, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and churches and missions in the San Francisco Bay Area. A Chanticleer Christmas is broadcast annually on over 300 affiliated public radio stations nationwide. Chanticleer Tickets start at $35
