62 Years of Music in the New Hampshire Lakes Region

American Landscapes 63rd Season

July 7-August 6, 2015

Dear friends, AMERICAN LANDSCAPES, the theme of the NEW HAMPSHIRE MUSIC FESTIVAL’S 63RD SEASON, will explore and celebrate American music and the great outdoors. You’ll experience the complete range of orchestral grandeur, from the thrilling FOUR SEASONS BY VIVALDI to the groundbreaking music of NICO MUHLY, a New England native and the focus of this summer’s Composer Portrait Series. Principal Guest Conductor Dan Perkins opens the season with an exciting concert of American music and ends the season conducting the NHMF Orchestra and Chorus in Vaughan William’s DONA NOBIS PACEM. This moving work, a musical plea for peace, as well as Muhly’s Pleasure Ground, will honor the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War as part of our American Landscapes theme. I’m also proud to announce we’ve been awarded a grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the “Music Unwound” consortium. The grant supports our presentation of the acclaimed DVOŘÁK IN AMERICA program, including a performance of Dvořák’s stirring Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” complemented by multimedia and narration by scholar-writer Joseph Horowitz. New this year will be a live orchestra concert with film, OZ WITH ORCHESTRA, at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion at Meadowbrook. We’re also enhancing our season offerings with collaborative education and outreach events: FAMILIES MAKING MUSIC programs with students, children and parents; MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS, featuring sunrise, sunset and campground concerts; music in area bars and cafés; and related art showings. Join us for a summer of great music and more!

OPENING NIGHT: AMERICAN LANDSCAPES

THURSDAY, JULY 9 at 8 PM

Silver Center for the Arts Hanaway Theatre Festival Orchestra; Dan Perkins, conductor STOOKEY GROFÉ BARBER BERNSTEIN

DAN PERKINS

Big Bang Grand Canyon Suite School for Scandal Overture Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

Our opening orchestra concert personifies the symbolic works of four 20thand 21st-century American composers: Ferde Grofé, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, and Nathaniel Stookey, the focus of NHMF’s Composer Portrait last summer. We launch the evening with Stookey’s whimsical fanfare, Big Bang, meet in the middle with Grofé’s and Barber’s nationalism, and end on the streets of New York with Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

DVOŘÁK IN AMERICA THURSDAY, JULY 16 at 8 PM

Silver Center for the Arts, Hanaway Theatre Festival Orchestra; Donato Cabrera, music director HOROWITZ Dvořák in America with multimedia & narration by Joseph Horowitz Kevin Deas, bass-baritone HERBERT Cello Concerto Walter Gray, cello DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”

KEVIN DEAS

We continue our celebration of America in this concert featuring a special multimedia presentation on Antonín Dvořák, arranged by former New York Times music critic and historian Joseph Horowitz. Attend the marriage of Hiawatha to hear the sonorous words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and experience the New World Symphony conducted by Donato Cabrera. Also on the program is Irish-American cellist/composer Victor Herbert’s Cello WALTER GRAY Concerto, played by NHMF’s principal cellist, Walter Gray. Herbert was a colleague of Dvořák’s, and some speculate the premiere of Herbert’s concerto inspired Dvořák to write his own.

THURSDAY, JULY 23 at 8 PM

Silver Center for the Arts, Hanaway Theatre Festival Orchestra Donato Cabrera, music director GLASS SCHUBERT VIVALDI

Company for String Orchestra Symphony No. 3 in D Major The Four Seasons Charles Dimmick, violin

CHARLES DIMMICK

Samuel Beckett’s 1979 novella, Company, tells stories of the past, present and future from an ominous voice in a kind of dream-sequence. This aesthetic, appealing to composer Philip Glass, became the inspiration for his 1983 composition of the same name. This work is accompanied by Schubert’s charming Symphony No. 3 and a special performance of Vivaldi’s iconic musical landscape, The Four Seasons, featuring our own Charles Dimmick.

This summer, catch the northeast premiere of Muhly’s Pleasure Ground, a work for baritone and orchestra that pays homage to Frederick Law Olmstead, landscape architect of New York City’s Central Park.
