Dear friends, I am so happy to be returning to the New Hampshire Music Festival that we all love so much—returning to a large family that includes talented musicians, dedicated board members, brilliant management and an appreciative audience that was always one of my favorites! PAUL POLIVNICK
Please forgive me for saying that the repertoire I have selected for the 2016 summer season is the best in all my years as Music Director! The overall theme of “Wanderlust” speaks to the cultural richness and diversity that is classical music. The Festival will begin with inspiring music from the great Germanic tradition, which will enable the orchestra to re-establish its unique sound and greet you like an old friend. Then we head to the Latin countries of Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico for sensual tropical nights and hot tango, followed by a feast of American music that gives us an opportunity to welcome back one of our country’s artistic treasures, David Amram, to the Festival stage. To take full advantage of his presence we’ve scheduled an extra event—a Family Concert where he will blow, strum and shake on ancient ethnic instruments while we demonstrate their contemporary cousins in the modern orchestra. At this point in the season, we will now focus our devotion on the nobility and lyrical beauty of Johannes Brahms with a performance of one of the greatest choral works of all time, the German Requiem. And finally we will say farewell to one another with the mysterious, exotic, earthy and powerful music of Russia climaxing with a major suite of highlights from Tchaikovsky’s dramatic ballet, Swan Lake.
Paralleling the orchestra series will be our popular Chamber Music Series on Tuesday nights, the continuation of our Music in the Mountains program, and music popping up around the Lakes Region in our effort to truly be the NEW HAMPSHIRE Music Festival. We also welcome Yulia Milshtein as our new concertmaster this summer. Thank you for joining us in what will undoubtedly be the best Festival season ever! Warm regards,
Paul Polivnick, Conductor Laureate

HANDEL Concerto Grosso, Op. 3 No. 2 HAYDN Symphony No. 98 in B-flat Major BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor George Lopez, piano
GEORGE LOPEZ
This program eases you into the season with familiar and comfortable styles. It builds in intensity to the close and pays tribute to the great Germanic symphonic line, which established the fundamental sound of an orchestra that has been built upon ever since. There are connections between these composers that relate to our Wanderlust travel theme. Handel and Haydn, a German and an Austrian, both spent a lot of time in London and had huge successes there. Haydn, although Viennese, worked for many years in Hungary. Beethoven greatly admired Haydn and again, although a German, spent many years composing in Vienna. These gentlemen were on the move!

RESPIGHI Brazilian Impressions DEL AGUILA Concierto en Tango Roman Mekinulov, cello REVUELTAS Colorines VILLA LOBOS Bachianas Brasileiras No. 8 Tropical nights, snakes slithering down trees, Carnival…this program captures the allure of Brazil. Miguel del Aguila is a Uruguayan-born American composer. His piece is a new concerto for cello, which is all about the ROMAN MEKINULOV Tango roots in Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. The Revueltas Colorines is a cool, brash piece of Mexican avant garde with folk music elements. Villa Lobos was the most prolific Brazilian composer with more than 2,000 works! His eighth Bachianas Brasileiras piece is well known— lyrical, noble, with a spirited ending. Roman Mekinulov is a native of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Russia, and is the principal cellist of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. After emigrating to the U.S. in 1989, Mekinulov studied at the Juilliard School of Music, where he completed his bachelor and master degrees.

FOSS Night Music for John Lennon NHMF Brass Quintet LIEBERMANN Piccolo Concerto MARY KAY ROBINSON Mary Kay Robinson, piccolo COPLAND Music for the Theater AMRAM American Dance Suite, Movements 1 and 3 AMRAM En Memoria de Chano Pozo David Amram, piano Lukas Foss started composing his intense and haunting piece for the Canadian Brass after John Lennon was shot on Central Park West (Lukas lived on Central Park East). Another composer from New York, Lowell Liebermann, wrote a beautiful concerto for piccolo with a perky and upbeat finale. Aaron Copland’s Music for the Theater captures the excitement of Broadway with many solo opportunities for various players. This Composer Portrait concert features the work of composer, conductor and multi-instrumentalist, David Amram. David started his professional life in music in the early 1950s playing French horn in the legendary jazz bands of Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. Appointed by Leonard Bernstein as the first Composer-in-Residence for the New York Philharmonic in 1966, he also composed the scores for the films Pull My Daisy, Splendor In The Grass and The Manchurian Candidate. He has collaborated as a musician with Thelonious Monk, Johnny Depp, Hunter S. Thompson, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Paquito D’Rivera, Tito Puente and many others. PAGE 5

TAMI PETTY
Of his choral masterwork, A German Requiem, Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote, “I could happily omit the ‘German’ and simply say ‘Human’ (or for ‘Mankind’).” Following the death of his mother, as well as his dear friend and mentor, Robert Schumann, Brahms assembled his own libretto for the Requiem from carefully selected Biblical texts, creating a universal message of comfort for the living. Soprano Tami Petty made her Merkin Hall solo debut as the 2014 Winner of the Joy in Singing Award. She has also performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall with the American Symphony Orchestra and at Avery Fisher Hall with the New York Philharmonic. Bass-baritone Paul Max Tipton enjoys an active career in opera, oratorio, and chamber music and has performed and recorded throughout North America. He has recently appeared with the symphonies of San Antonio, Grand Rapids, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and has performed with the New York Philharmonic as part of their first-ever Bach Festival.
