Magical Mix-Up
Drawing and Painting
Castles in the Sky
Book Arts
It’s time to get messy. We will be mixing, measuring, and making cool creations while experimenting with recipes for making art materials and projects. Make chalk, playdough, Rice Krispie sculptures and a handmade book for your recipes. Become your favorite character in this fairytale camp for little ones. Make a mask, put on a puppet show, create a costume, act it out! We’ll do all this and more based on classic fairytales.
Go Green, Create Green
Save the planet and use your imagination at the same time. We will use recycled materials to create instruments, books, masks, sculptures and other projects from objects typically thrown away.
Museum Sleuth
Students will experiment with a variety of materials as they learn basic drawing and painting techniques. Emphasis on experimentation with mixed media, composition, self portraits, color mixing and color composition. Explore the creative possibilities of book arts. Learn how to make altered scrapbooks, journals, and paste papers. Change an old book into a funky and fun piece of art by cutting, adding paint, layering tissue, and a variety of unusual papers.
The Great Outdoors
Landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, and even the Museum’s garden will serve as a backdrop for this painting and drawing class. Explore a variety of collage and painting techniques.
Campers begin the day deciphering clues to lead them on a search through the Museum for a specific piece of artwork. The art project for the day will be based on what the students uncover! Wacky folk art, unusual faces, 3-D art, clay and more!
Mini Masters
Crazy for Carle
Ancient Arts
Young artists will be inspired each day by a different Eric Carle story. Make your own playdough like Walter the Baker, create textured collages using paint and tissue, go under the sea with Mr. Seahorse, and make a crazy cat from Have You Seen my Cat?
Organic Art
Discover the beauty in art and nature. Create seed mosaics, nature prints, sand paintings, and sand candles (7-9 years only). Discover beautiful patterns in butterflies and make them to resemble stained glass. A week full of nature themed crafts.
Music Box
Spark your creative mind with singing, dancing, and making your own musical instruments. You will make rattles, drums, and maracas out of found and manmade materials.
Funky Doodle
Add a splash of color, a dab of texture, and a spark of imagination as you create mobiles, crazy jewelry, unusual frames, and other crafts you design. Bring pictures of your family to make a family collage.
Extreme Constructions
In the Southern tradition, you will try your hand at the potter’s wheel to make a bowl or cup then add a face so it can be glazed and fired. Use simple painting techniques to paint on wood, and experiment with block printing on fabric and paper. Emphasis will be on Southern art.
Fantasy World
Pick up your brush and paint masterpieces in the style of great artists. Paint flowers like Van Gogh, cubist faces like Picasso, collages like Matisse, and more. You will return to the past as you make a miniature mummy, a Pharaoh’s mask, and learn to write your name in hieroglyphics. Design and make a ceramic tomb from clay for all your treasures.
Garden Art
A week long class for making art from and for the garden. Handmade clay gnomes, birdhouses, mosaic flowers, and more!
Art Adventures
Enjoy a fun filled week getting messy with all kinds of materials. Paint, mix up your own dough, make pasta sculptures, and go on scavenger hunts through the galleries.
Lights – Camera – Action!
Back by popular demand. Campers in this drama camp will make their own music video or short play. Create scenery, decide on props and make your own imaginative costumes. A rockin’ week!
Celebrate!
Celebrations happen all over the world and will happen at HMA this summer! Make a reverse glass painting for “Dias De Los Muertos,” a plaster mask (of your own face) for Mardi Gras, papier mache maracas, and other interesting pieces of artwork.
MASTERpieces
Get to know a new artist and art term each day as we paint, draw and sculpt our way through the elements of art. Matisse’s collages, Monet’s waterlilies and more will be our inspiration.
A HMA favorite! Create magic wands, fairy/dragon wings, crowns and shields. Become a king or queen for the day and have your picture taken in the giant royal throne. Create a lovely frame for your picture as a memento of summer camp.
Clay, Wire, Paper
Surf, Sand and Sea
Animal Antics
Don’t miss this deep sea adventure as we paint sea creatures, and tropical fish, make 3-D jelly fish and aquariums, create mermaids, sea turtles, whales and more! Explore a variety of art techniques.
Design your own clay piece to glaze and fire, construct wooden and found object sculptures, make trees from wire and 3-D paper art. Learn how to make a bowl out of paper and personalize it. Whether it crawls, swims or flies, we will use a variety of animals for inspiration. Paint, recycled objects, and dough will help us to create two and three dimensional animals.
