OPEN STUDIO WITH THE FIGURE Six Mondays: July 12, 19, August 2, 16, 23 & 30 6 – 9 PM $70 Members, $85 Non-Members The Open Studio is an on-going opportunity for artists to work with an unclothed model. Participants can draw, paint, collage or use the printing press. The model holds the same pose for three hours with a break every 20 minutes. All ability levels are welcome. There is no instruction. Next Session: September 13, 20, 27, October 4, 11 & November 1 PORTRAIT DRAWING AND PAINTING Two Wednesdays: August 18 & 25, 1 – 4 PM $24 Members, $30 Non-Members Come join the artists that will surround Bobbi G for six hours of drawing and painting. Bobbi is a tall beauty wearing a flowery dress and big hat (maybe). She will sit in the same pose both days for 20 minute segments. All materials are welcome. There is no instruction. Register by Friday, August 30. getting to know your digital camera With Robert Dant Two Mondays: September 13 & 20, 6 – 8 PM $30 Members, $40 Non-Members Bring your digital camera and instruction book to class. This is a short but intense course for those who are new to digital photography and want to learn the essential basics. This course will cover everything from what to keep in your camera bag to the importance of making sure your camera is on its optimal settings for the best possible looking images. Other topics include strategies on dealing with power, batteries, memory cards, and making sure you have enough memory to capture all the shots you want while you are away from your computer. Suggestions and approaches will also be offered on how best to backup, archive, store, print and share your images with friends and family. Register by Wednesday, September 8.
The Hickory Museum of Art is happy to announce a roster of two and four day classes from now until August that will appeal to teenagers in middle and high school. Classes explore ceramics, figure drawing, spray can art, artist bookmaking, wired jewelry, and still-life painting! Classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 – 5:30 PM. clay! Also, stop by the Museum and try my new Scavenger Hunt!” Air Dry Clay 3 cups flour 1 cup salt ½ cup white glue 1 cup water 1 tsp. lemon juice Mix ingredients together until well blended. Mold into shapes or roll out and cut with cookie cutters. Let dry overnight before painting.

The Hickory Museum of Art is a center to inspire, educate, and transform our community and region through the visual arts. The focus of our Collection is American art.
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HMA’s mission statement has changed (see above). We’re still “collecting, preserving, interpreting and exhibiting art” which is mostly American. However, we have also made a commitment to inspire, educate and transform this community and the region through the visual arts. One of our biggest transformation projects that began this year and will continue through June 2011 is the planning and implementation of HMA’s long-term Southern Contemporary Folk Art Collection exhibit. This project has been funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Their $150,000 matching grant will allow us to transform the 3rd floor Mezzanine Gallery through a variety of innovative design concepts. Art objects made by amazingly creative self-taught artists will be used to provide new ways to enhance visitors’ experiences, no matter their ages, education or backgrounds. This summer, I hope you will go to the 3rd floor to spend a few minutes to participate in our prototype development, part of the IMLS Project’s 1st Phase. I also hope you will seriously consider making a matching contribution to help us reach the $50,000 needed to finalize the 2nd Phase implementation and receive the full IMLS funding award. The Unifour Foundation Endowment Fund of the Catawba Valley, an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation, awarded a 3 year grant to HMA in support of the IMLS matching grant. Foundation President Chip Huffman and Vice President Nancy Fritz present HMA Executive Director Lisë Swensson with the $5,000 first year check.
The fiscal year ended June 30, 2010. During the past year we have: • reached over 40,000 people (members, visitors, and off- site participants) • through 23 exhibitions; tours for more than 3,700 people; public programs for 5,100; classes and workshops for 2,000 students/artists • and 45 regional artists were represented in the Galleria Museum Shop while • volunteers offered over 4,800 hours of assistance in Museum operations and • additionally, 1,400 individuals experienced the Museum during private events sponsored “after hours” in our galleries.
