OUTDOOR TERRACE Outdoor terrace gives residents a communal environment that is suitable for multiple activities. The terrace also helps to multiply the effect of greenery in urban living lifestyle. This encourages residents to get out of their apartments to socialise more often. This has become a feature of the design since it illustrates the integration of architecture and landscape.

y Delight residential series experiments the definition of “DELIGHT” in the language of BUDDHISM - one of the main religion as well as culture in most of Asian countries. My designs are to accommodate a family that migrates from Vietnam to Australia about 20 years ago and they expanded to a family of 6 of 3 generations. As some parts Richmond has been under strong influence of Vietnamese community in different aspects, I find it a great inspiration to startwith during my design process.

CONCEPT BUDDHIST GEOMETRY

With some of the well-known symbols of Buddhism, I intend to translate Buddhist theories into architectural language. The enzo circle which represents delight, the Dharma wheel with pinwheel rotation pattern are my primary source of exploration.

M

y Delight 2, 120 sq. house, I use the circle and square to convey cultural and social issue that an Asian family have to encounter when arrive to Western Australian culture. The square and circle represent the interaction of 2 different cultures, they meet, they collide, they struggle to fit in, but finally they form a new identity in order to adapt better. Applying that final geometry onto the section and extrude it along one side, I got a hybrid form that can be divided into 2 components for functional purposes.

CONCEPT BUDDHIST GEOMETRY

The atrium connects all the floors together with the altar in the middle. In this case, the altar is not approachable since its only hung down from the rib, but can be seen from any corner of the house. The rub cage turns out to be a recreational space where the grandparents can do some gardening, it can also contribute to scenery of the neighbourhood since it looks like a green house from that elevation. kids

BUDDHIST GEOMETRY

The altar is again the backbone of the house, divide the square into 4 parts. They form different floor plates at different level, following family hierarchy, but everything all surround the main altar. The floor plates at different level tend to break the solidity that is usually found in a common apartment. The gap between the floor plates and altar allow communication between different spaces. This Nightingale Jenga Model aims to explore the potentials of microapartments in order to improve apartment living’s affordability, decelerate domestic energy consumption’s surge as well as enhance spatial usage efficiency. Through the analogy of Jenga wooden blocks, Jenga Nightingale model gives working class, middle-income people to possess a home in inner urban suburb and enables them to live to the very edge of their precious footprint. Nevertheless, the residents are still able to experience a standard apartment lifestyle in a community based environment and relish that harmony between individualism and collectivism.

INDOOR MARKET

NORTHERN ENTRANCE

The indoor market activates the groundfloor with changeable programs and short-term lease. The shops are pixelated into small shopping stalls that are allowed to spill onto the street, as a way to engage the building with surround context. This also celebrates the informal trading typology that is usually observed at Footscray.

The northern entrance is directly linked with the northern laneway which is also a possible local link on the site. The laneway enhances the interaction of indoor and outdoor, contributes to local activities.
