PAULH EBARTON AD OF SCHOOL As I write this letter and watch the last of the leaves fall to the ground on our beautiful campus, I’m prone to reflect on all of the special traditions and events that the Fall semester brings at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. While the Spring semester is all about new beginnings, transitions and moving on, I think there’s something uniquely special about this time of year and the sense of nostalgia and wonder that comes along with it. We began the semester by ushering in the new: we welcomed an amazing 1,395 Golden Bears to our campus back in August, 226 of whom are new to HIES this year. But as the holidays approach we reflect on the old: the memories, experiences and friendships from both the recent and distant past that add color to our lives. That’s just one of the things that makes HIES so special to me: our multigenerational community and rich history allow us to celebrate our past while we build toward the future. One of those time-honored traditions turns 20 this year, which you’ll read about in the following pages: our partnership and visits to Asahigaoka High School in Sapporo, Japan. What started as a passion project for 2

four HIES teachers in 2003 has evolved into a near-annual trip for Upper School students (this summer’s trip marks our first since the pandemic) and frequent student exchanges. Hundreds of students from both HIES and Asahigaoka students have been transformed by this special relationship throughout its history. If you’ve been keeping up with life at The 805, you’ll know there have also been many exciting alumni gatherings in recent months. We held our annual Homecoming celebration in late September, complete with games, treats and tailgating on the new Owen Family Quadrangle before the football game. It was wonderful to see so many of you in attendance, to meet your families and hear about what’s happening in your lives. Many of you joined us for athletic competitions, Fine Arts performances and holiday celebrations like the Alumni Pumpkin Bash. Our Alumni Relations team has even had the chance to reconnect with some of our most recent graduates on their College Road Show visits to Auburn and Tuscaloosa, which will hopefully continue into the spring and beyond.

If you haven’t been to campus in a couple of years, I highly encourage you to plan a visit – it is truly amazing to see the way that our physical spaces have transformed over the last several years, and to watch a new generation of Golden Bears make those places and spaces their home. A lot has changed in our 64-year history as a school, but I can assure you that watching our students enjoy their new common spaces, media centers, classrooms and playgrounds is sure to bring a smile to your face no matter how long ago you graduated. I’d like to take one more moment to offer my heartfelt gratitude to so many of you who participated in Giving Day 2023. Thanks in large part to your generosity (and the hard work of our alumni volunteers,) we raised an astounding $630,000 for the 2023-24 Golden Bear Annual Fund. We’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School wouldn’t be the same without your support, in all its forms. What a blessing it is to be a part of a community that enables the next generation of young people to rise up as leaders and doers of good in a world that so desperately needs their touch.

Giving day 2023 On Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School’s fourth-annual Giving Day, the community went “All Paws In” to support the Golden Bear Annual Fund. Thanks to the collective generosity of the entire community, the school surpassed the goal of 805 gifts and unlocked a Quad Party for students and faculty! A total

of 825 gifts contributed more than $630,000! Thank you to everyone who made this day a huge success. It would not have been possible without everyone coming together, from near and far, to support the school and this important initiative. THANK YOU!

Roadshow The HIES Alumni Relations Office set out on their next journey with the Alumni College Roadshow to two stops at SEC schools, Auburn University and University of Alabama. On Tuesday, Sept. 19, the Alumni team visited The Hotel at Auburn University for their first stop, where HIES alumni enjoyed a complimentary lunch and caught up with the team. The Alumni team then ventured to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to the University of Alabama and hosted a luncheon at Hotel Capstone on the university campus on Wednesday, Sept. 20. HIES alumni Scarlett Smith ’21 and Margaux Ventulett ’23 led the HIES Alumni team on a brief campus tour, where they made stops at Denny Chimes tower, sorority row and Bryant Denny Stadium prior to the luncheon. While the Alumni office hasn’t yet announced their next stop, these college engagement opportunities have been such an exciting way to connect with our HIES alumni undergraduates.

A lu m n i R eg i onal C lubs The HIES Alumni Office held its first alumni regional event on Aug. 29, 2023 for our Washington, D.C., area alumni at The LINE D.C. Hotel. Alumni and college undergraduates were invited for dinner and networking. The school sincerely thanks Clara Hunter ’18 and Alexandria Cannon Nunnaley ’16, who helped coordinate and share the event information for this event and group. Two former HIES faculty members who now live in the area, Kacey Michelsen and Mike Glaze, also attended and mingled with alumni. This D.C. regional group has plans to continue pop-up engagements in the future for our HIES alumni. Contact the Alumni Office if you are interested in starting a group in your area.

ive of Holy Innocents’ all-time best athletes and one former coach were inducted into the HIES Wall of Fame during the Sept. 15, 2023, football game vs. Douglass High School. The Wall of Fame was established in 2008; it recognizes and honors outstanding varsity athletes, coaches and/or contributors who have demonstrated excellence in their athletic pursuits. The six inductees were Cade Anderson ‘17, Alfredo Granier ‘17, Kendall Jabaley ‘17, Sarah Porter ‘16, Cole Smith ‘17 and Ruth Donahoo, former athletic director and coach. At the ceremony, the former athletes and/or families received a commemorative plaque – a replica of the one displayed on the Wall of Fame in the Main Gym – as well as a “free ticket for life” to any HIES sporting event. Their bios are as follows: Cade Anderson ‘17 – swimming Cade Anderson moved to the University of Georgia as one of the most decorated male swimmers in HIES history. While a student, he was a NISCA/Speedo All-American, won individual state championships in the 100back stroke and the 100-fly, propelled several podium relay teams and still holds five school records. He later went on to compete for a year for the Bulldogs. Alfredo Granier ‘17 – baseball Alfredo Granier was a beast at HIES whether holding the bat or hurling his pitching staff on the mound. Not only did he help lead the squad to a Final Four appearance, he also batted .327 while having an amazing 0.75 ERA on the mound. He went on to play Division III baseball for five years, where he played in the national championship game. He is now a hitting coach for the Houston Astros.

Kendall Jabaley ‘17 – cheerleading Kendall Jabaley was a spirited success while at HIES; she cheered for the football and basketball teams for four years - two each as JV and two each as varsity. She was also captain as a sophomore and a senior for football. She went on to cheer for the football team at Georgia Tech for four years and is now in her sixth year as a community instructional material tryout coach at HIES.

Cade Anderson '17

Alfredo Granier '17

Sarah Porter ‘16 – volleyball Sarah Porter more than successfully quarterbacked the HIES varsity volleyball team for four years, where she is now second all-time in aces and assists, fourth in aces per game, fifth in career blocks, seventh in career digs and ninth in total kills. She went on to become a starter at nearby Emory University, where she was a key member of the Eagle squad that won the Division III national title.

Kendall Jabaley '17

Cole Smith ‘17 – basketball Cole Smith was a four-year starter on the HIES hoops squad and helped the Golden Bears to the Final Four during his tenure. He is currently only one of only five players in HIES history to score more than 1,000 points and is in the top-10 all time in points in a game with a tally of 36. If that isn’t enough, Cole connected on an incredible 40% of his 3-point shots and was among the top in free throws as well. Ruth Donahoo – Athletic Director/Volleyball coach Ruth Donahoo began her successful tenure as head volleyball coach, where she consistently guided the Bears to playoff appearances that included several Final Four slots. Moving on to athletic director, the HIES athletic programs consistently remained in the top 10 in the coveted Director’s Cup, with HIES taking the top prize in one of her years. She served as director for eight years before moving to Florida.

ummer indicates a time to rest, recharge and, for many teachers, to re-enter the classroom as they renew certifications, explore certain interests and gather new ideas to instruct their students.

K-prep teacher Allison Jabaley attended the 23rd Conference for the Orton Gillingham Academy entitled “Making the Most of Multisensory” this past summer online. The conference is held each year but dives into different topics presented by fellows of the Orton Gillingham Academy. Sessions examined trends in sight words, how to produce sounds, executive functioning skills, pathways to success, orthographic mapping, various assessments and diagnostic tests. One session she particularly enjoyed looked at multisensory math lesson plans and how to incorporate literacy tools in math. “I enjoyed the online format because I could re-watch some of the sessions, take screenshots and follow up with the presenters later on,” Ms. Jabaley said. “It was all really helpful.” Mckenna Vaudrin, Primary School counselor; Micayla Rood, Primary School Brainstormers teacher; Steven Kent, Middle School Learning Resource Department Chair; and Parker Conley, American Sign Language teacher/sixth grade dean all participated in the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Instructional Leadership Program, a six-week course held online this summer.

“What I learned has already helped me collaborate and communicate better with my cohort,” Ms. Vaudrin said. “It’s very important to build relationships with teachers in my role as school counselor.” “This course simplified everything,” Ms. Rood said. “It taught us how to have difficult conversations and gave us a lot of tools to add to our toolkit.” Mr. Kent completed the Harvard course as well as the Cliff Valley Institute Summer Institute’s Executive Function Certificate Training, along with Alison Oliver, Middle School Learning Resources teacher. Their department strongly emphasizes executive functioning skills as part of Middle School Strategies. In four days of training, they took a deep dive into how the brain works and how skills can be addressed in children. They discussed a “bottom up” approach to build a child up in helping them succeed. “You might think kids are unmotivated or procrastinating but it’s actually a lack of executive functioning that you’re seeing,” Mr. Kent said. “It was interesting to learn more about the brain.” As part of the certification with the Cliff Valley Institute, Mr. Kent and Ms. Oliver completed a final exam. They also will present a case study to the Institute at a later date.

The course offered information about collaboration, strategy, communication, goal-setting and more. Attendees, who included teachers from all over the world, watched online videos and completed various assignments on deadline. As part of the required work, participants recorded videos of themselves on different tasks, which were then critiqued by peers. They also had access to a community board where they could pose questions to be answered by mentors or peers; the mentors often posted comments to start discussions among the group.

Middle School English teacher Kristina Nesbitt attended the Georgia Film Academy Dramatic Writing Teacher Training, a week-long course held at the Academy in Fayetteville, Ga. Participants wrote plays and different types of scripts and held peer reviews to share constructive feedback with each other. Due to the Writer’s Guild strike during the summer, many writers were available to lead the courses and discussions.

Both Ms. Vaudrin and Ms. Rood gained helpful ideas and self-awareness from the course. They have already started to implement instructional coaching ideas.

She plans to introduce film and video projects with her students and is speaking with colleagues about reviving the

Middle School Film Festival. “Film is a great way to keep kids engaged,” she said. “They love to be on camera.” Lower School art teacher Abigail Babaz and Upper School art teacher Dorsey Sammatro traveled to France with Upper School students Chloe Walker ’24, Sophia Jarboe ’26 and Fletcher Witzigreuter ’26 for a program with the Savannah College of Art and Design, which houses a campus in Lacoste. Their adventure started in Marseille, where they took in a bit of sightseeing before relocating to Lacoste. They enjoyed lectures on the history of photography, lessons in drawing and flower pounding, and tours of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse along with Les Baux-de-Provence to see the Van Gogh immersive exhibit. They traveled to Saint Remy-de-Provence to visit the asylum/ hospital Van Gogh lived in and the locations where he created several of his paintings. In Arles, they toured some historic sites

and museums and the famous yellow café Van Gogh painted. They wrapped their trip in Paris with visits to the Eiffel Tower, the Seine and the Arc de Triomphe. “The program was so well done,” Ms. Babaz said. “This was such a wonderful opportunity with SCAD.” She has already started introducing art history and Van Gogh to her students and plans to recreate the flower pounding lesson with her fifth-grade students this year. Being students from time to time enables teachers to grow in their profession and continue to serve students in their educational journey. What worked 10 years ago may not be as relevant for tomorrow’s learners as Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School continues to evolve its curriculum to prepare students for the future. Celebrating 20 years w i th A sah i gao k a H i gh S chool

he summer of 2023 marked a significant anniversary in the life of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School – its relationship with sister school Asahigaoka High School in Sapporo, Japan. For the first time since 2019, a group of HIES students traveled to Sapporo in person to visit the school campus and connect with their student partners. The interest in Japan formed in 2001 when thenHead of School Sue Groesbeck became involved with the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Master Teacher Program. The original Fulbright scholarship program was a U.S. government-initiated project that was created in 1946 to further mutual understanding through exchanges of university students, faculty and researchers after World War II. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fulbright Program and to show the Japanese people’s appreciation for the many ways Japan benefitted from the program after World War II, the Japanese government established the Japan Fulbright

Memorial Fund ( JFMF) and from that, the JFMF Master Teacher Program was created. The JFMF invited thousands of American teachers and administrators to Japan with fully funded shortterm tours of the country. The JFMF participants learned about Japanese culture and education, developed a collaborative year-long curriculum, and returned to the U.S. to implement these selfdesigned plans and to share their knowledge with their students, colleagues and community. In January 2002, six HIES teachers wrote grants to apply for the year-long JFMF Master Teacher Program. In February 2002, the school was awarded a grant to participate in the program and was partnered with a Japanese school located in Sapporo, Japan.

In March 2002, the six HIES teachers went to Washington, D.C., for a four-day meeting with the Japanese and American teachers from across the U.S. and Japan who were selected to be a part of the

"The Japanese Exchange Program continues to touch my heart today due to the meaningful impact it made on students at both Asahigaoka and HIES. Our students connected with each other and developed heartfelt relationships that are still standing today. program. While there, three teachers were chosen to travel to Japan – Carol Hahn from Lower School, Debbie Temple from Middle School and Tim Evans from Upper School. Each of these three teachers had two Japanese counterpart teachers who accompanied the HIES teachers back to Atlanta for a week.

In June 2002, the three teachers set out for a six-week trip to Japan, fully funded by the Japanese government. They spent a week in Tokyo learning about the program, including how to achieve satellite conferences, use the technology effectively and make connections with their counterparts in the program. From Tokyo, the teachers flew to Sapporo to meet their partner schools. Ms. Hahn went to Midorigaoka Elementary School, Ms. Temple was assigned to Miyanomori Junior High School and Mr. Evans landed at Asahigaoka High School, which would later become the HIES sister school. The HIES team departed Japan in July 2002 with the idea to formally establish a sister school relationship with Asahigaoka High School. "The Japanese Exchange Program became a reality because of a casual conversation between Shimako Nakamura, a Japanese English teacher at Asahigaoka, and I. We met briefly one day and talked several times thereafter. The exchange is a result of a conversation between two teachers from two countries who taught in two different schools, but somehow connected and felt in our brief time together that maybe we could connect our schools and our students," Ms. Hahn said. On March 28, 2003, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School and Asahigaoka High School were formally united as sister schools. The resolution documents were signed by administrators from both schools simultaneously during a satellite video conference and later mailed to each other to validate original signatures on all of the documents.

The first student exchange took place from Jan. 5-12, 2004, with the arrival of 12 Asahigaoka students and faculty members Shimako Nakamura and Toshiki Takase at The 805. Ms. Hahn served as one of the leaders of the exchange and visited Japan five times in subsequent years. She became close with Japanese teacher Shimako Nakamura and their friendship has continued to present day. 12

From July 7-19, 2004, 12 HIES Upper School students ventured to Japan for the first time. They were impressed by Asahigaoka High School and the city of Sapporo. The school was founded in 1957 and is at the top of the rankings of more than 50 high schools in Sapporo. The school consists of three grades with 320 students in each grade, and 80 faculty/staff members. The campus is situated on the side of a mountain with sweeping panoramic views of the city of Sapporo. During their visit, the HIES students typically fly into Osaka and then take a train to Kyoto. They tour the area, including Nara, Hiroshima and Miyajima and enjoy lots of local sights and cuisine. The trip continues with a flight to Sapporo, where the Asahigaoka High School students greet them at the airport with signs and some students in costume.

13

Prior to 2023, the visit included a home stay with the partner student but this past summer, due to health protocols, the HIES students resided at a nearby hotel. They spent the bulk of their time on campus to attend classes with their partner students. Each HIES student made a presentation about themselves to a class and the group performed a dance for the school. The HIES visit coincided with the school’s annual festival.

Giles Close ’25 said the festival was a highlight of the trip. “The school had decorations, everybody had their kimono or yukata on, and everybody was excited about the day. All the advisories in each grade built shops in their homeroom, and all students would visit each room and buy food,” he said. “Toward the end of the day, everybody from HIES danced in front of the entire school. We choreographed the dance and chose the music, and 1,000 students were screaming and cheering us on. I am so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone because those moments were some of the trip's funniest and most enjoyable parts.” The students “met” their partners virtually prior to their arrival in Sapporo and connected via social media. Many HIES alumni have maintained friendships with their Japanese partners long after their trip concluded. Amanda Turner ’13 participated in the exchange program in 2011 and has visited Japan three additional times since then, in 2016, 2018 and 2023. She worked for the Japan America Society of Georgia after graduating college in 2017 and lived in Tokyo for several weeks. She has remained friends with her original partner and has reconnected with her on each visit. “I wasn’t prepared for the amount of emotion when it was time to leave,” Ms. Turner said. “Each person got to say something. I loved having the students in Atlanta. It was very hard to say goodbye then, too.” For Davis Hatcher ’18, who traveled with the HIES exchange program in both 2016 and 2017, the visit to Japan fulfilled his curiosity about Asia. “It is a different culture and a different way of life,” he said. “There is no substitute for the experience.” He also enjoyed hosting his partner in Atlanta, where students tour sites such as CNN Center and the Center for Civil and Human Rights. “It was fantastic to show someone the things I love about the area where I was born,” he said. Many students have kept journals, and created photo albums, videos and even blogs about their experience. Many wrote about the program for college application essays. “Before signing up, I knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime 14

opportunity because the relationships you would make within the exchange program are forever,” Giles said. “Everybody got along very well, and it felt like we had all known each other for years.”

Ms. Hahn took her last visit to Japan in 2007 before retiring after 25 years of teaching at HIES. She was invited to attend Asahigaoka’s 50th anniversary and served as their guest speaker. Two HIES students, Tiffany Tang ’11 and C.J. James’10, accompanied her to play violin and piano at the anniversary event. “It was wonderful to watch the kids and see how they viewed themselves in another culture that is so different from ours,” Ms. Hahn said. “They all say it changed their life.”

In 2008, Robin Gafford, Lower School administrative assistant, took over as the Japan Exchange Program Coordinator. Her daughter, Dr. Greer Gafford Pratt ’10, was a member of the exchange, hosting in 2008 and 2010 and traveling to Japan in 2009. “Hundreds of kids have been changed by this experience,” Ms. Gafford said. “The most satisfying part is seeing their reactions to everything they are seeing, eating and experiencing. They react so favorably and they are so adventurous. And the relationship with the school and the students in Japan sets this program apart from others. Students still stay in touch with their Japanese friends, I see it on social media – students meeting up with their partners from 2011.” Ms. Gafford has played a key role in building and maintaining this close relationship with Asahigaoka since that time, participating in and leading many of the exchange visits. “It’s a cultural exchange, so it’s not language-based… we all fill out profile sheets, and our Japanese colleagues match our students with students from our sister school, so they can actually have one-on-one contact. They end up making friends with the whole community. I love watching students really bond with their partners. It’s just extraordinarily special in every way.” In July 2019, Head of School Paul Barton accompanied the HIES students to Japan, the first time a school head participated in the exchange. The Asahigaoka students came to HIES in January 2020 — the last visit before the COVID pandemic halted all foreign travel.

In July 2023, HIES once again sent students to visit our sister school for the first post-pandemic trip. “My favorite part of the trip was watching the students meet their hosts,” Elizabeth Scholz, Global Programs Coordinator and teacher, said. “They were nervous and excited in the beginning and by the end they were all hugging and crying.”

"Hundreds of kids have been changed by this experience."

As a first-time chaperone on the exchange trip, she also praised the students’ commitment to making their experience a success. “Everyone was so willing to practice Japanese,” Ms. Scholz said. “They worked really hard to learn some words and phrases. Their host partners wanted to practice their English and our kids got to practice their Japanese.” Undaunted by a global pandemic, the sister school relationship with Asahigaoka is unique to HIES. Even as school leadership has changed hands and new students join the partnership each year, the affiliation that was inked 20 years ago remains and the words that students and alumni use to describe the experience echo each other: Amazing, Unique. Life-changing. “Embrace the incredible experience that you will have, try all the unique foods — even if you think it could be gross — make as many relationships as you can, and try all the activities possible,” Giles advised. “This trip is extraordinary because the relationship you built with your HIES peers and Asahigaoka partners is very special. Savor your short time there.” “The Japanese have taken us into their hearts and that has continued all these years,” Ms. Hahn said. With current travel restrictions in Japan, it remains to be seen if the Japanese students will be able to visit Atlanta during this school year. Ms. Gafford said the HIES team will be ready to welcome them on a moment’s notice if needed. HIES students are prepared to host the Japanese students in homes if protocols allow; if not, they will spend time with their partners on campus. The visiting students will also have the opportunity to tour around Atlanta. For more information about the Japan exchange program, please contact Ms. Gafford or Ms. Scholz. Applications are open to students in 10th through 12th grades.

assistant principal after serving at the Alliance Academy for Innovation for these past two years.

She started her seventh year teaching kindergarten for Arlington Public Schools earlier this year. Chae Sprague Richardson ‘07 and her husband, Rusty, welcomed their son Beau Baker Richardson on June 30, 2023 weighing 7lbs, 2 oz in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Ryan Woolfolk ’07 got engaged to Ruthie Mayeux, fellow Atlanta native and graduate of North Atlanta High School on Oct. 1, 2023.

Rob Aitkens ’08 and his wife Kathryn were married in Dalton, Ga on May 27, 2023. They had their post-wedding reception in downtown Chattanoooga and were grateful to be able to celebrate with a great group of their family and friends, many of which were HIES alumni. Austin Pound ’08 After graduation Austin attended Appalachian State University for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia where he graduated in 2013. In 2011, while enrolled at UGA, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. He went to Basic Training at Ft. Benning in Georgia from Aug. 2011-Dec. 2011, where he graduated with honors. Then he went on to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant and had one deployment to Honduras in 2014, where they helped train their military to deal with drug cartels and gang violence. After returning from deployment he fulfilled a lifelong dream to have a German Shepherd, who he named Piper. She is his ultimate best friend and adventure buddy. While enlisted in the Army National Guard he had a civilian job working with fellow alumnus Daniel Blaustein’s '08 brother Jack at his restaurant “Jack’s Pizza and Wings” in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood of Atlanta from 2014-2018. Austin and Jack were building their own Bacon Jerky brand called Happy Jacks, and he worked as the General Manager of this iconic pizza and wings restaurant for four years. Eventually Austin got a job as a Scrum Master with Cognizant in 2019, which is a role where he develops small, self-managing teams of software developers who incrementally build software for clients using Agile principles. In 2020, when the pandemic struck and his work contract was coming to an end Austin put everything in storage and he and Piper headed to Maine to thru-hike

the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail is a 2,193 mile continuous hiking trail from Maine to Georgia through the Appalachian Mountain range. Around 3,000 people attempt a thru-hike every year, and about 1 in 5 actually complete the entire trek. During 2020, due to the pandemic, less than 1,000 people attempted the thruhike since many facilities were shut down and quarantine was encouraged by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Because everything was closed it was a much different hike than most people experience; hostels were closed, restaurants were closed, the trail was not being maintained, shuttles were difficult to find into towns and it was generally lonelier without the massive bubbles of hikers on the trail. Piper and Austin went Southbound from Maine to Georgia (SOBO), which is not the traditional direction of travel as most hikers start at Springer Mountain in Georgia and end on Mount Katahdin in Maine. SOBO is generally accepted as the more challenging direction because the northern states have much harsher and rugged trails, with enormous technical climbs through Maine and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Austin’s goal in going SOBO was to walk home to Georgia and end with his family nearby. While hiking south through New Hampshire, Austin crossed paths with someone named Liza who was out for a day hike and they really hit it off. After chatting for about 10-15 minutes and they parted ways, but as she was walking away, Austin suggested Liza follow he and Piper's journey on their Instagram page. Later that evening, Liza sent Austin a message suggesting they reconnect on a future hike. Eventually, Liza had joined Austin and Piper on 200 miles-worth of hikes and their connection grew stronger. It took Piper and Austin five-anda-half months to complete the entire 2,193 mile hike, but they did finish it surrounded by his family on the summit of Springer Mountain. Austin lost 60 pounds and Piper gained 1 pound. Austin moved to Maine to be with Liza a couple months after completing the trail, and a year to the day they met, he proposed to her at the exact spot where they met on the Appalachian Trail. They got married a year after that in August of 2022, with Piper as their ring bearer, and recently celebrated their one year anniversary. Liza is absolutely the love of his life and he is thankful for every day he gets to spend with her. This year he was able to get a job working remotely as a Scrum Master again, which is his dream career. Austin, Liza and Piper are planning on moving back to Georgia in November of this year, after living in Maine for twoand-a-half years.

Russell Flynt When Russell Flynt ’97 and his family moved to Atlanta shortly before the start of his ninth-grade year, he didn’t know what to expect in the Upper School at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. The Upper School itself was still fairly new after the first class of seniors graduated in 1995 but he found his classmates to be friendly and welcoming. He got involved in a variety of activities, including basketball, baseball, Honor Council, Student Council, peer counseling and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He remembered that Chaplain Mike Wallens provided a great amount of support to the students. When the time came to select a college, Mr. Flynt enrolled at Ole Miss, where he earned a B.A. in business administration. He went to work for Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) and was assigned to the University of Florida, where he primarily supported the men’s fraternities. He met his wife, Molliann, in Gainesville. They are the proud parents of Ella Rae (10), Rosiah (8), Rita Kate (7) and Tommy (5). “It was a little tricky going to the Florida-Ole Miss games,” he said. “I saw a lot of SEC traditions in action.” After seven years with Cru, he decided to pursue a Master’s degree and enrolled in seminary at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago. “I felt that God was directing me to work in the church,” he said. Their first child was born in Chicago and, with a desire to live closer to family, Mr. Flynt found a church in Birmingham, Ala., that needed a pastor. From 2013 to 2021, he served as associate pastor of Redstone Church, a partner of North Point Ministries. In his time there, he realized the significant role of counseling in Christians’ lives and entered a program to earn a certification in Biblical Counseling from the Christian Counseling & Education Foundation (CCEF). He now works with Heart Song Counseling, based in Birmingham. He supports people coping with trauma, loss, abuse, depression and anxiety, in addition to marriage counseling. “I’ve had struggles and I have had mentors invest in me. I like helping people,” he said. “Everyone has purpose, everyone matters and everyone needs people to talk to. God made each person unique and special.” The past few years brought many people’s struggles to light as they coped with the fear and isolation of COVID-related protocols. The addition of virtual counseling sessions allowed many to find support through difficult days. “Kids are more resilient than we realized but so many kids also struggle with mental health,” Mr. Flynt said. “It’s okay not to be okay, but it’s not okay to stay that way. It takes a lot of courage to reach out and ask for help, and there’s nothing wrong with doing that.” He often draws on lessons learned during his days at HIES. “It was a really important time in my life and the school is amazing,” he said. “The school was so united, we cheered for all our teams together and people were made to feel welcome.” He has remained close with former classmates and teammates. “I played varsity sports and took AP classes but that’s not what I really remember about high school,” he said. “I got a love for people and built friendships. There were so many teachers who cared about me and that made me care about others.” TORCHBEARER | THE HIES ALUMNI MAGAZINE | WINTER 2024

Emanuel Mathis alu m n i prof i le At the same time that teachers and administrators at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School were preparing for the new school year, Emanuel Mathis ’98 was in the same boat. Now in his third year as principal of fifth-eighth grades at KIPP Woodson Park Academy, Mr. Mathis leads the vision, strategy, programs and people at his school, as well as any challenges that arise. “I’m constantly pushing toward our goal,” Mr. Mathis said. “I want to ensure that our kids are growing academically and socially and growing their character.” The middle years represent a time of change for many young people; they need a strong support system at home and at school. “I had really good memories of my middle school days and I like to give scholars an example of how to look at life,” Mr. Mathis said. “This is an age group that I like and there’s a great satisfaction with pouring back into young people. And they definitely keep me on my toes.” Mr. Mathis has worked in three different KIPP Metro Atlanta schools in roles including learning specialist, math teacher, athletic director, basketball coach, instructional coach and assistant principal. He previously served as manager of basketball development for the Atlanta Hawks. While his resume is filled with achievements, he is most proud to be the father of his fiveyear-old daughter, Parker Simone. He also coaches basketball for KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School, who faced off against the HIES Golden Bears in a tournament a few years ago. Mr. Mathis was a star player for the varsity Golden Bears and was inducted into the Wall of Fame in 2009. He averaged more than 27 points per game as a senior and scored 1,601 career points. Totaling more than 600 rebounds, he was named 1st-team All-State, the 1998 6A Player of the Year, the runner-up State player of the year and was on the Atlanta Tip-off Club Metro Team of the year. Showing up at The 805 to coach his KIPP players in that tournament was a little nerve-wracking. “I felt like I had the wrong uniform on but I also felt at home,” he said. “Everyone gave me a warm welcome.”

teammates. Starting at HIES in ninth grade, he was terrified in the beginning. “From my first week at HIES to my last week, I never would have expected that I would bond with people the way I did,” he said. “I loved being part of a team and those relationships have lasted longer than any other.” Mr. Mathis was the first HIES student to earn a Division I basketball scholarship. He signed with Florida State University, where he played for two years before transferring to Virginia Commonwealth University. In Virginia, he averaged 11 points and four rebounds per contest and was the team captain for two, 20-win seasons. He was also named to the 1st team AllAcademic team as a senior. He earned a B.S. and a Master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Mathis was a featured speaker at the opening of the STEM Building at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School on Aug. 21, 2015. He addressed the students in an allschool assembly that followed the ribboncutting for the building.

The strong work ethic that he developed as a student and as a basketball player certainly support all that he aims to accomplish as a school leader. Navigating public education in a post-COVID world has caused him to rethink his school’s day-to-day learning plan. “COVID exposed a lot – education is not a one-size-fits-all approach,” he said. “Public education has not evolved enough and we have shifted the way we look at the work. Education is not just what is happening at the school; it is all around us. Kids are learning all day everywhere and education can grow beyond the walls.”

Savannah Smith Hamilton

When Savannah Smith Hamilton ’15 was an Upper School student at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, just getting out the door often felt like a daily miracle with siblings Sophie ’18, Scarlett ’21, Stone ’22 and Skylar ’26. Once she started driving, her mornings consisted of dropping off Scarlett and Stone at the Lower School, then taking Sophie to Middle School, parking her car, walking Skylar to the Primary School and then starting her own school day. As a member of Student Council, the WHIS broadcast and Prom Committee, Ms. Hamilton kept a full schedule with additional commitments in cheer, tennis and volleyball.

“A lot of my favorite memories are from Friday night cheerleading,” she said. “And I loved broadcast – Mr. [ James] Jackson ’03 is the best.” One of her favorite classes was poetry with Ben DeSantis. “I love poetry to this day and I credit that to him,” she said. Ms. Hamilton also participated in the HIES Program for Global Studies. She visited South Africa on a school trip in which each student spent part of their time with a host family. The immersive experience impacted all on the trip. “That is my favorite trip I have ever taken,” she said. “It was absolutely incredible.” She also took part in a two-and-a-half week mission trip to Costa Rica. The students assisted with building a school, helped residents practice English and

were able to enjoy a whitewater rafting excursion. That trip was memorable for many reasons, including that Ms. Hamilton exhausted 11 cans of bug spray. “I was way outside my comfort zone but it was amazing,” she said. “Savannah is someone who embodies some of the best of what Holy Innocents’ wants people to be,” Erik Vincent, director of the Program for Global Studies, said. “She has a bright personality and a servant’s heart, and her faith and commitment to service is a central part of her identity. Her work in the Global program was always very mission-centered.”

While her participation in Global programs took her outside of her norm, her college search did as well. Ms. Hamilton had her heart set on Ole Miss for a long time as her mother, Misty, is an alumna. But her college counselor suggested she expand her search and after visiting the University of Alabama, her plans changed. She enrolled at Bama and majored in public relations with minors in hospitality management and computer science. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and served on the university’s Leadership Council. After graduating in 2019, she ran a restaurant and boutique hotel until COVID forced her to close the business in 2020. It was time to regroup. She had toyed with the idea of opening a clothing boutique for some time. In a family with so many girls, clothes become fairly important in daily life. She applied for her business license and, drawing heavily on her computer science skills, she opened Smith and Mode, an online women's clothing boutique, in Aug. 2021. While the shop does not have a physical presence, she frequently holds

pop-up boutiques in other locations or sipn-shop parties in people’s homes around Muscle Shoals, Ala., where she currently lives and works. Continuing with her entrepreneurial endeavors, in the fall of 2022, Ms. Hamilton opened Scottarosa Farms, a wedding and events facility north of Birmingham, Ala. “I like to stay busy and learn new things,” she said. “I’ve always liked planning, I helped with my sister-inlaw’s wedding and the business has been a great success.”

As a newlywed herself, her personal experience has served as an asset. Ms. Hamilton married Jacob Hamilton in June 2022; he is the head football coach at Phil Campbell High School. Her Friday nights in the fall continue to be occupied with football if she’s not working an event, which are currently booked into 2025. “I’ve had to teach myself a lot and I’ve learned by asking others,” Ms. Hamilton said. “A lot of it is trial and error. I’m continuing to pour a lot of time and love into these businesses to help them thrive.” She advised others to run with their ideas and not let fear stop them. “It’s okay to fail,” she said. “Attitude is altitude and it will take you far.” -Christina Mimms

Jackie Addy Even when you blaze the track as a distance runner, there are often hurdles that sit before you and obstacles that must be overcome. Jackie Addy ’19 has had her share during her collegiate years, and thus far, she's leaped high over each one and left them in the dust (like most of her opponents).

Jackie graduated from HIES in 2019 – a more than decorated cross country and track athlete, a broadcast/journalism star, and a good student who – by junior and senior year – found herself and her coaches answering recruiting emails from Georgia to Oklahoma and beyond. She left HIES with an individual cross country title in 2018, left the tracks holding EVERY top 10 mark in both the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs, finished in the top three in the state in both of these events, and eventually ended the recruiting war by choosing University of Florida. It was at UF where she met two huge hurdles – one ,of course, was COVID, while the second was the University of Florida itself. “After COVID, I was sick my sophomore year and couldn’t compete due to NCAA standards,” Jackie recalled. “My junior year, once I got back, it just seemed that everything I did wasn’t enough. It was always more, more, more. It got to a point where I wasn’t even sure I liked running anymore and wondered what I was doing.” After the 2021-2022 school year, her coach told her that if she didn’t hit the high standards, she could train and be on the team but wouldn’t be put in a race. With that, Jackie’s race became inward. She included her mom and stepdad and close people when making what turned out a great call – both on and off the race venues. “I entered the transfer portal and, within 24 hours, I had over 100 coaches interested in me. It was SO nice to be seen again instead of just thrown aside,” she said.

It was the Baylor University coach – formerly at Auburn and formerly someone who had recruited Jackie while at HIES – who convinced her. “Have you ever thought about coming to Texas?” he asked. She hadn’t, but she did. “My mother went to Rice and she’d considered Baylor for law school, so she was familiar with the state,” Jackie said. Present day, perhaps it can be said that it is NOT "location, location, location," but instead, "location, chemistry, timing" and Jackie now seems to have all three in motion faster than her kick down the stretch. Her roommate is her best friend. Their slogan is “person over player.” She loves running and is competing in her second year there. As a side note, her future career is beginning to take shape, and it will soon become her top priority. Majoring in broadcast/journalism with a minor in corporate communication, she is in charge of the Baylor Tik Tok and Instagram accounts, has worked with an affiliate of the Florida Marlins baseball team and has interviews lined up with professional organizations in different sports. If this isn’t enough, the Baylor coach always brings Jackie to the front when potential running recruits come in. She looks to her future in anticipation and excitement, rather than it being a workout that’s too tough to complete. -Dunn Neugebauer

he beginning of high school athletics at Holy Innocents' Episcopal School began in 1991-92 when HIES hired Emory “Buster” Brown away from Mt. Vernon Christian Academy to launch the Upper School athletics program.

Buster’s Bears topped Buford in that championship effort, and later, while at Lakeview, he took them to their first Final Four finish. If this wasn’t enough, he guided Mt. Vernon to three consecutive boys’ state tennis championships prior to his stint at HIES.

A passionate soul if there ever was one, Buster’s vigor and work ethic rubbed off on his staff, and it wasn’t long before HIES – previously only a K-8th grade school – was mentioned among the likes of Pace, Marist and Westminster.

“I don’t take any credit for that – I just opened the cans of balls for them to make sure they didn’t cut their hands,” he said with a laugh.

“I was told by my old high school basketball coach, Bob Blankenship, that if you could somehow find a place to start your own program then that would be the way to go. It was the late great and former HIES Headmaster Alice Malcolm who made that opportunity happen,” Buster said. “To this day I credit a lot of the success at HIES to all she did and who she was. She always said that if we can get it done, then let’s get it done. I copied that philosophy and am thankful to her to this day.” Buster's impressive coaching career included not only his time at HIES but also stops at McEachern, Mt. Vernon, Lakeview, Truitt McConnell College (now University) and White County. He finished with 560-plus wins, retiring as one of the most successful coaches in the state. One of his former players – Missy Evans Gardner ’02 – speaks of him this way: “He was the toughest, yet most caring coach. He made me want to work harder both for my teammates and myself. In doing that, he created an atmosphere that naturally forged a strong bond amongst the team, both on and off the court. I’ll never forget the feeling after winning state in 1999 – running through the tunnel to celebrate with him in the parking lot. No team deserved that win more than we did.”

Still, the word “retiring” should be put in quotes when mentioning this man, as Buster instead went from the Bear Den to the Georgia mountain world of zen. “When I was coaching at Lakeview, I realized I hadn’t gone hunting in a while, so I went to what was called the Atlanta Buckarama at the time, an event sponsored by the Georgia Wildlife Federation. It’s a hunting show that sells goods. While there, there were five or six guys there holding birds and I was curious,” he said. It turns out, the bird-holding group was and is the Georgia Falconry Association, and the president lived near Buster. From there, Buster got after the man like a dog after a bone. “It was a year later I had my first bird,” he said. Now living in Lumpkin County where he still resides, Buster went all in – he studied for and passed the written test to get in the profession, and then took it steps further. “When you do that exam, you have to check out books from different places and it’s not that easy. With that said, I started a coaching clinic – the Apprentice Academy - for falconry to help people who want to get involved – as it had never been done before. Our last event in early September was our 10th sell out in the last five years,” he added. During all this, he started his own company –

Georgia Mountain Falconry – eight years ago, which keeps him busy putting on clinics as well as enjoying the outdoor air. “You know, I was in basketball as a coach for over 40 years. Once I left it, I’ve never missed it once,” he said. Call it taking care of both your extroverted and introverted side if you will – Buster went from from whistles and basketball horns, traffic tie-ups, and noise, to stepping outside into the open air that only God could’ve invented. “It’s been heaven up here,” he said simply. In looking back at it all, he contributes his success at HIES to being able to hire good people, and he smiles when remembering how it was. “We only had one gym and that was down at the Elementary School,” he said. “The first year, I coached both the girls’ and the boys’ basketball teams before we hired Rick Torbett to take over the boys. Still, I was able to bring on good people – people that

got this place off to a good start – people like Luci Bornholm, Randi Aton, Brad Kolowich ’01, Torbett, Dan Knudsen, Tony Boyd, Clay Cushman, Mareka Howard. I could name so many more. At that point, I was able to just sit back and enjoy it here.” Currently, Buster remains a “movement is medicine” type man – non-stop as he summed it up – and that’s the way he’s done whatever he’s done. Once upon a time, he would return home from a late basketball game only to throw in the tape and watch it again. Find what you love. Make it happen. Go all in. Read up. Try things. It can perhaps be said that a good player or coach is like water – you simply find the holes and you fill it when and where it needs to be filled. With that said, Emory “Buster” Brown has now taken off his state championship rings, put a bird on the hand instead, and continues to jump in with every talon available to make good things happen.

The brown out The day before the 1999 girls’ state championship clash against mighty Buford, the Lady Bears battled a very tough and pesky Taylor County team out of Butler, Ga. A small town, Taylor County once won over 100 games straight in reeling off championship after championship back in the 1960s and ‘70s. In that game and back in those days, there was what was called a “Seatbelt Rule” regarding the coaches. This meant that, after a coach received a technical foul, he or she then could still coach but had to sit the entire game and was never allowed to stand up.

Coach Brown, in the first half, received a technical foul. Late in the second half in a one-point game, needing to get his player’s attention, Coach Brown jumped up to call a very well needed time out. The referee responded by giving him his second technical of the night, which resulted in an automatic ejection from the contest and thereby having him, by rule, sit out the next two games. Going forward, the next night against Buford – while the Golden Bears were taking to the court trying to beat a team that had beaten his squad twice during regular season – Coach Brown was at a nearby Applebee’s watching the game. In his place on the bench was boys’ head coach Rick Torbett and the girls’ assistant, Clay Cushman.

As for the game, it actually wasn’t one, as HIES got revenge with an exclamation point in knocking off the Wolves 71-46. One of Buford’s players, Christi Thomas, later went on to star at University Georgia before playing in the WNBA.

This was the interesting part in this game that the AJC referred to as “The Brown Out” regarding Coach Brown’s suspension. When the final horn sounded, all the players – instead of doing the obligatory racing out on the court – left the gym and ran out into the connecting tunnel.

There, they met their beloved coach, who was walking in from the nearby restaurant with a smile on his face. The AJC the next day reported this as “the shortest on-court celebration they’d ever seen.”

N ew O pportun i t i es for F aculty

Over the past several months, three members of the Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School faculty enjoyed unique professional development programs to support both their teaching roles as well as personal interests. These work/travel programs were made possible by the Greenbaum Grants. Joe Conway, Upper School film and broadcast teacher, traveled to the Netherlands to experience the EYE Film Institute and Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. The museum houses one of the largest collections of international films (55,000 in total) in the world, including a film that dates to 1896. The collection includes film posters, photographs, books, projection equipment, personal archives of renowned filmmakers, film music and film equipment, some of which was used by Charlie Chaplin. Mr. Conway visited the museum several times and attended classes and screenings held on site. In one class he attended a screening of a new foreign film by a director who is an expert on Martin Scorsese. He highlighted Mr. Scorsese’s technique, which is more European than American. “There is a lot of collaboration among filmmakers around the world,” Mr. Conway said. “Many borrow from each other’s styles.” While in Amsterdam, Mr. Conway also toured the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum which had a display of 28 paintings by Johannes Vermeer and the canals around the city. Vermeer’s use of light in his works is relatable to the use of light in film.

Mr. Conway is creating a film about his Amsterdam experience to review with his students and will implement some new ideas in his classes as well. Jason Rutledge, assistant principal of academics in the Upper School and varsity golf coach, attended a three-day program at the Sea Island Golf Performance Center. He participated in training with Chan Reeves, elite trainer; Dr. Morris Pickens, sports psychologist and performance specialist; Tom Hemmings, senior fitness instructor; and Phil Kenyon, director of putting instruction. In working with these professionals, Mr. Rutledge was able to address common issues he sees among his players and gain new ideas for golf practices, drills, putting techniques, schedules and injury prevention. Mr. Rutledge teaches a sports psychology class in addition to coaching and serving as an Upper School administrator. In working with “Dr. Mo,” they spoke at length about mental health, having a “goto shot,” focus and common frustrations. “One of the biggest takeaways from Dr. Mo was having a practice mindset vs. a performance mindset,” Mr. Rutledge said. “I was a different type of client looking for help with a team and learning to help them embrace what they can control and change.” Dr. Mo utilizes quite a bit of data in his work with golfers. Looking at statistics from the PGA, LPGA and collegiate golf, he showed Mr. Rutledge how data can be used in decision-making on the course and better inform players about what they should be doing.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with different experts and bring back information to help my students,” Mr. Rutledge said. “It was a really good experience and I learned a lot.” Dunn Neugebauer, athletic communications director and author, attended the Rockvale Writers’ Colony in College Grove, Tenn. The center offers short-term residencies in a quiet, secluded setting (317 acres of mostly farmland) for writers to focus on their work as well as to socialize and collaborate with fellow writers. In his week there, Mr. Neugebauer began work on a new title, “These Things that Happened (And Some that Didn’t)", ran the hiking trails throughout the property, penned nine separate essays and enjoyed “agenda-less” time away from the busyness of school life, practices, games and meets. “The week at Rockvale put exclamation points on what I’ve learned about the art of the written word and highlighted in bold print my life passions of ‘read, write, run,’” Mr. Neugebauer said. “I loved my time there and I thank the Greenbaum family and Holy Innocents’ for the opportunity.” Endowed by the Greenbaum Family, the Greenbaum Grants are designed to promote teaching excellence by providing teachers with resources to undertake special enrichment activities beyond what might otherwise be covered by the school’s professional development budget. All faculty and staff are eligible to apply for the grants. Grant applications are reviewed and awards are approved by a committee consisting of the director of advancement, the associate head of school and the recipients of the awards from the previous year.

Madison Freeman Retail seems to be in the blood of the Miller family and Madison Miller Freeman ’14 is continuing the legacy they started. Her dad, Greg, and uncle, Robby, opened the first Miller Brothers clothing store in 1996 in Buckhead and expanded their offerings with the opening of Miller Collective in November 2022. While the original shop carries only men’s clothing and accessories, Miller Collective sells clothing for men, babies and children, gift items and items for the home. Ms. Freeman was at the forefront of the new store’s opening and is involved with all aspects of the business including buying, marketing and social media and day-to-day management of both stores. “I’ve always loved clothing, design and visuals,” she said. “The work came naturally to me.”

occupied a lot of her junior year, though she had already decided to major in business. A HIES-sponsored college tour of 12 different campuses sparked her interest in Ole Miss. It was the first college she applied to, and she received notice of her acceptance on the first day of her senior year at HIES. With that decision made, she was able to enjoy the many celebrations of her last year and she advises current seniors to do the same. “Take advantage of all the activities and events HIES has to offer,” she said. “Academically you will be ready for college, and you will stay close with your friends, no matter where you go.” At Ole Miss, Ms. Freeman was a member of Chi Omega sorority and earned a degree in business management with a minor in marketing. She also met her future husband, Will, who, somewhat coincidentally, works in the cotton industry. She worked for two other companies before officially joining Miller Brothers in 2021.

She spends a good amount of time at the store, but also travels with her dad and uncle to scout new merchandise and to meet with a men's retail collective group of which the Miller Brothers are members. “We have such product variety we don’t have to stay in one lane,” she said. While both stores maintain an online presence, the company is committed to keeping an in-store presence in Atlanta. And while shoppers often ask about women’s clothing, the focus for now is with men’s retail. “The women’s industry is very different,” Ms. Freeman explained. Her busy schedule does not differ much from her time at HIES, where she served on the Upper School activities committee for four years, played softball and was involved with Young Life. The Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Class of 2013 celebrated their 10-year reunion on Friday, Sept. 29 following the HIES Homecoming game against Westminster on Baker Field. The reunion took place on Stephens Family Courtyard overlooking the Owen Family Quadrangle with live music performed by Jack Hamill Barton ’14. Reunion guests enjoyed catering by Taqueria del Sol, played cornhole and enjoyed catching up with one another while reading their prediction letters – a HIES Alumni tradition at the 10-year reunions.

2022-2023 ANNUAL REPORT

33

Dear HIES Community, The 2022-2023 academic year at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School will be remembered by many of us as the first full year of enjoying many new additions to our campus. Our school year theme was “The Dawn of a New Day,” and we certainly lived up to those words with the opening of the new Dorothy Sullivan Lower School, Upper School Humanities building, Owen Family Quadrangle and other new and improved spaces at The 805. As the Our Time Capital Campaign concluded, our families were finally able to see and enjoy the fruits of their generous giving (in case you missed it, we exceeded our goal and raised more than $32.5 million through the four years of the campaign!). The 2022-2023 school year was full of creating, serving, growing, celebrating and learning, from the Primary School to the Upper School, for all 1,300+ of our enrolled students. Perhaps most remarkable when we reflect on last school year is that even amidst a significant capital campaign, your commitment to regular giving did not slow. Our whole community, from alumni, current parents, faculty, staff and trustees, showed up in spectacular support of the Golden Bear Annual Fund. We raised over $1.35 million to support a wide array of operational costs. The Apogee Tax Credit Program was once again a massive success, raising over $1.2 million to support our families and students coming to HIES from public schools with financial aid needs. Your generosity has once again helped us provide a premier educational experience for our students. Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School is a well-known name in our local community and beyond for our state-of-the-art facilities, topnotch athletics and academics, unique opportunities for students and our heart for service. We are quite proud of the outstanding reputation that you’ve helped us foster. Your financial support takes on many forms, from the Capital Campaign, the Golden Bear Annual Fund, Endowments, Estate Planning and one-off gifts. Regardless of how and when you give, this report is a testament to the fact that every single dollar makes a difference in the lives of our students, faculty and staff. As I read through the countless names listed in this report, I am reminded of the power of collective generosity. Because of your support, we are able to continue each day in pursuit of our mission: to develop in students a love of learning, respect for self in others, faith in God and sense of service to the world community. Thank you once again for helping make Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School the special, outstanding place that it is.

With gratitude,

Michele Duncan, CFRE Director of Institutional Advancement michele.duncan@hies.org O: (404) 847-1153

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION The HIES Parents’ Association is here to

• Faculty and staff appreciation events – including a festive Christmas and Spring Luncheon, “Teacher Treats” breakfast buffets and barista coffees and other such special acknowledgements throughout the school year

• Encourage parental participation in the life of the school • Better acquaint parents with the activities, programs and policies of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School • Facilitate communication between parents and the school administration, faculty and staff • ●Enrich the school’s academic and community programs Additionally, the PA’s Fundraising and Community Life committees marshal the resources, talents and efforts of hundreds of parent volunteers to provide the “extras” that enrich the lives of HIES students and our community. In 2022-23, the Parents’ Association conducted several fundraising activities: the annual Tuition Raffle, sales of the Bear Benefits Card, Bingo Night, Bear WearHouse and Community Partner programs with the likes of Publix, Kroger, and Mabel’s Labels. The PA’s annual Golden Bear Gala was held at The Georgia Aquarium with a record guests total of over 750 in attendance. The Parents’ Association fundraising activities during the 2022-23 school year yielded significant revenues and enabled the PA to donate

more than $340,000 directly to the School, benefitting HIES students and families. Said funds were committed to each division for items such as field trips, assemblies, speakers, iPads and Mac books, playground equipment, garden beds and much more to enhance the student and school experience, plus the PA’s Capital Campaign pledge and the HIES Golden Bear Annual Fund. In addition to fundraising, our Parents’ Association also supports and funds the following programs, and offers them free of charge to the HIES community: • Parent representatives for each grade and division • Buddy families who welcome new families to HIES • Monthly grade-level newsletters containing timely information about HIES happenings and opportunities for parents to volunteer and get involved • Parent updates and information sharing via Facebook and Instagram

• Compelling Parent Education events with guest speakers and facilitators, funded by the Parents’ Association and offered free of charge to parents • A parent field trip to the Center for Civil and Human Rights - a powerful journey that lends itself to informative and fruitful conversations with our children and wider community and offered for free to parents through HIES’s partnership with the Center • HIES Around the World community culture celebration and potluck dinner • Special speakers and outings to promote cultural awareness and drive inclusivity throughout our HIES parent community • Fifth-grade Cotillion class coordination • Prayer gathering for parents, held each month during the school year in Christ Chapel at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church • Support and service to HIES families in need through our Caring Bears program
