WELCOME TO A WORLD OF LEGENDARY HOME ENTERTAINMENT. A world where technology, performance and design come together to create exceptional instruments – for any space or style – that captivate the senses and transport the mind. Welcome to the world of Infinity.

THE LEGEND. He could make you dance or break your heart. Sometimes he did both in a single song. Born poor and black in America’s Deep South, blind from glaucoma by age seven, Ray Charles Robinson grew up to become Ray Charles, the internationally acclaimed performer with an unmistakable voice and manner, the father of soul, a towering icon of 20th-century music. In a 1966 LIFE magazine profile, Thomas Thompson wrote,“His niche is difficult to define. The best blues singer around? Of course, but don't stop there. He is also an unparalleled singer of jazz, of gospel, of country and western. He has drawn from each of these musical streams and made a river which he alone can navigate.” A singer, pianist, saxophonist and composer who defied musical conventions and simply played what he felt, Charles was, above all, an electrifying performer.“Leaping into falsetto, stretching a word and then breaking it off with a laugh or a sob,” Jon Pareles of The New York Times observed, following Charles’s death in 2004,“he could conjure exaltation, sorrow and determination within a single phrase.” “I’ve Got a Woman” – which unapologetically combines the joyous beat of gospel music and the earthy lyrics associated with the blues – was the record that put Charles on the pop charts in 1956.A string of genre-bending crossover hits followed, along with five decades of stardom, 12 GRAMMY® awards, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Kennedy Center honors and a Presidential Medal for the Arts. Fans and music critics may long debate the exact nature of Ray Charles’s appeal, but Ray himself had a simple explanation:“I was born with the music in me; that’s the only explanation I know of.”

THE NEW SHAPE OF SOUND. The popularity of flat-panel plasma and LCD video displays ought to suggest at least one certainty about the future of home audio – tomorrow’s loudspeakers won’t be the boxy, intrusive instruments we know today. They’ll deliver all the power and realism we’ve come to expect. But they’ll be thinner and more elegant than ever before. And the first of this brave new generation? Infinity Cascade.™ With patent-pending Maximum Radiating Surface™ (MRS™) flat-panel transducers, Cascade delivers uncompromised Infinity sonic performance from strikingly beautiful speakers that are thin enough to be wallmounted. And because the MRS diaphragm functions much like a flat piston, Cascade speakers achieve flat broadband frequency response and uniform on-and off-axis dispersion with minimal breakup, even at high listening levels. That’s performance that not even the boxiest of conventional loudspeakers can surpass.

7

Deep, realistic bass is an essential element of the cinematic experience. But it’s just as essential in duplicating the experience of a live musical performance. With the highperformance, small-footprint Model Twelve and the even more powerful and uniquely thin Model Fifteen, Infinity delivers authoritative, distortion-free bass in subwoofers that are easily integrated into any music or home theater system. Deeper, cleaner bass from room-friendly and more aesthetically pleasing designs. It’s a combination that discerning listeners (and their decorators) have long been hoping for.

8

Both the Model Fifteen and the Model Twelve are designed for easy integration into your listening room, as well as your décor. Infinity’s proprietary Room Adaptive Bass Optimization System™ (R.A.B.O.S.™) allows you to precisely tune the response of your subwoofer to the physical characteristics of your room with just three simple adjustments. And a full complement of inputs and controls makes connection with any movie or music system simplicity itself.

INFINITY MRS FLAT-PANEL TRANSDUCER

IT’S NOT EASY BEING FLAT. The appeal of flat-panel transducers has never been more obvious, and the basic technology behind them is straightforward enough. But vintage EMI flat panels had performance limitations in the low frequencies and suffered from voice coils that were prone to thermal compression, making them inappropriate for use in high-performance speakers. In developing Cascade’s MRS transducers, Infinity’s engineers incorporated new materials and technologies that have overcome the drawbacks and delivered significant performance benefits.

CONVENTIONAL CONE CONVENTIONAL CONE

CMMD® diaphragms.Optimizing the parameters of Cascade’s flat-panel diaphragms presented a serious engineering challenge. But by reinforcing Infinity’s patented Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm (CMMD) material – a uniquely rigid, lightweight laminate – with strategic ribs and gussets, Infinity engineers were able to strike the perfect balance between electro-acoustic efficiency and reliability.

Dual elliptical voice coils. Another flat-panel challenge was in finding a way to uniformly drive as much of the diaphragm’s radiating surface as possible. A traditional cone can easily be driven by a small voice coil at its apex, but flat panels require a completely different approach. Infinity engineers developed dual elliptical voice coils for Cascade’s MRS drivers. With more than six times the voice-coil contact of a typical cone transducer, they move the diaphragm much like an ideal flat piston, for crystal-clear, resonance-free operation throughout the driver’s entire dynamic range.

Higher dynamic range. In addition to driving the flat diaphragm more uniformly, dual elliptical voice coils offer another benefit. The greatly increased surface area of the coils allows them to dissipate heat more efficiently, reducing thermal compression and dramatically increasing the speaker’s dynamic range. The result is increased sonic clarity with reduced distortion.

More uniform radiation. The flat pistonic response of Cascade’s MRS drivers sends a cleaner, more uniform sound to listeners’ ears than conventional cones. The geometry of a cone inherently creates signals of unequal length with different arrival times, causing what engineers call “time domain smear.” Cascade’s signals arrive more nearly together, for exceptional detail and resolution.

FILL YOUR SPACE WITH SOUND, NOT SPEAKERS. Design has always been an Infinity hallmark, and Cascade’s revolutionary technologies have given our designers new freedom. The bulky footprint of the conventional loudspeaker is gone. (With wall-mounting, the footprint disappears entirely.) Even the powered subwoofer – that most essential of Infinity innovations – has an unexpected new look. Narrow, elegant and (above all) thin, Cascade will surround you with brilliant, captivating sound, but without intruding on your space. Has there ever been a more beautiful way to experience the full excitement of your favorite movies and music?

CHANNELING A LEGEND. “This kid can do it, see? He’s the one.” – Ray Charles Known at the time as a stand-up comedian and television star, Jamie Foxx was an unlikely choice for the title role in “Ray,”Taylor Hackford’s film biography of Ray Charles. But Foxx is a gifted actor who attended college on a piano scholarship, and he was able to demonstrate his musical chops in a wide-ranging jam session with the master himself. In a sense, Hackford commented, Foxx “won the role directly from Ray Charles.” “The key word for me was ‘nuance,’ because I didn’t want to simply impersonate him,” Foxx said.“I wanted to capture some part of his spirit. There were a lot of little touches which I tried to layer – his musicality, his warmth, his sense of balance, his posture – until the physical side of things all fell into place.” It’s an astonishing incarnation, born of an intense inquiry into the emotional highs and lows of the subject’s life, an immersion in the classic soul, jazz and blues recordings of the era and 12 hours of simulated blindness, every day.As The New York Times movie critic A.O. Scott wrote of Foxx, “You get the sense that he is not just pretending to be Ray Charles, but that he understands him completely and knows how to communicate this understanding through every word and gesture, without explaining a thing.” In addition to his considerable acting skills, Jamie Foxx is also an accomplished singer. But Hackford never considered asking Foxx – or anyone else – to re-create Charles’s vocals for the film. Only the original master recordings would do.“No one sings as well as Ray Charles,” explained Hackford. Few would disagree.

THE LEGEND LIVES ON. “I never wanted to be famous. I only wanted to be great.” – Ray Charles Ray Charles’s vocal style was as distinctive and instantly recognizable as any voice ever recorded. And the echoes of that voice – along with the musical intelligence behind it – will long be heard in the world of popular music. Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin covered his songs. Van Morrison and Elton John have regarded Charles as a major influence. The performances of Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Joe Cocker and Billy Joel owe much to his ebullient vocal style. As Joe Levy, music editor of Rolling Stone magazine, has said,“The hit records he made for Atlantic in the mid-50’s mapped out everything that would happen to rock ’n’ roll and soul music in the years that followed.” Charles’s landmark 1962 album, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, remained on Billboard magazine’s Pop chart for two years and produced four hit singles. His final record, Genius Loves Company, a collection of duets with Norah Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson and others, earned eight GRAMMY® awards, including Album and Record of the Year. In between, Ray Charles produced one of the most comprehensive song libraries in music history. As his biographer Michael Lydon told U.S. News & World Report, “Ray’s records will hold up the way great paintings and novels do.” Although he’s a member in good standing in Halls of Fame that represent Country, Jazz, Blues and Songwriters, his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame citation may say it best: “Many musicians possess elements of genius, but only one – the great Ray Charles – so completely embodies the term that it's been bestowed upon him as a nickname.”
